Title: Top 3 away days/games
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, October 24, 2008, 19:41:54
Birmingham 6-4 dont think i will ever see a game like that again.
Brentford the year we won div2 the amount of fans we had crammed in was crazy.
Finally blackpool weekend when we got the point to go up,i dont think i have ever seen that many town fans in one away location before was a crazy weekend.

Wembley against Sunderland was my best experience, the noise was defening.
Watford away under Ardilles was pretty awesome as well, probably the best I've ever seen us play away from home.

Leeds away in the league cup....even though we ended up losing, that game had everything you could ever want in a game of football.

Scum away last game at the Manor. When Robinson got the first, Alexander really wound the Scum fucks up. Slave Traders 4-0 - White got 2 - again Chalkie wound them up big time. Tranmere in the play offs - not only a great game but the Tranmere fans were class.

For those of us of a certain generation, Stoke, Blackburn and Wembley in 1990 were all amazing, unforgettable days.

On reflection, I think that they were actually consecutive trips?  That takes some believing....and beating.

1. Brighton away in the PO's 03/04, we got beat but that Fallon goal was the most unbelievable feeling ever. Running down the running track with my hand cupped to my ear. Mental. We did ourselves proud and the team did too.

2. Wembley 1993. I remember very little as I was only 5, but I'll always remember the THWWWAAAACK of the post when Maskell scored. On my dads shoulders. What more could a boy want?

3. Gillingham away, 2/3 years ago when we got stuffed. Cos I got absolutely smashed with the TEF and it was a belting day out. One of the most enjoyable booze ups of my life. Brilliant.

stoke 1990 was the best for me.

And me as well.

Luton away in the FA Cup 3rd Rd in 1980  was a good match, they were a good 2nd division side then, we were about to play the league cup semi finals against Wolves and going well in div 3 (before it all went wrong), and we won 2-0.

I also enjoyed the 3-0 FA Cup win at Cambridge in Round 4 in 1992. We'd lost both the league games to them that season, and i hated Cambridge, total opposite to how we played the game. That was an excellent day.

Loads of others, but those 3 come to mind.

Too many, but, Gills play off at Selhurst, Darlington when we got stuffed 3-0(so bad it now ranks as great) And wolves league cup semi final 1980, awsome. And cheating but every trip ever to west ham.

Not the 3 best games but the 3 most memorable "away day experiences"

Wembley v Sunderland

Wembley v Leicester (the sound of ball on post still sends shivers down my spine)

MK Dongs away 1.1.07

All were spent with copious amount of alcohol and great mates and of course 3 great victories

11/12/1993     Liverpool vs STFC
30/04/1994     QPR vs STFC
20/04/1996     Blackpool vs STFC

I've been many great away games in more recent years but, if I'm honest, none have been able to match these three.

The Brum 6-4 - Charlton at the valley when they needed a win for the Premiership and we won - Rovers at Ashton Gate when their pitch at Twerton was waterlogged.

I thought the decision was taken on police advice - nothing to do with conditions. Was a great game thuogh - good to see a 2 way fight turned into a 3 way fight when City turned up.

Suppose it would have to be the Wembleys.

I mostly remeber the trip home from the Sunderland one and all the people on the motorway bridges and lining the streets as we drove back into Swindon, that was just mental.

Im struggling to remember a single other away game ive been to ???

1-0 win at west ham. Maskell free kick I think in the last minute.
6-4 at Brum.
4-1 Win over the Gas at twerton park mainly as all my raving mates at the time from Bath were Gas and I was out with them that night after the game :)

wierd one was the second leeds game in the cup, went on ashs coach with yeovil, was this 2005? It was strange because on the way back i was asleep and woke up on the coach as we pulled up in a services, John Peel was on the radio and said "that was the wedding present in session" i opened my eyes and could see yeovil asleep across the aisle and it felt like i had gone back in time to 1987.

£10 says unfit pitch.........

LEAGUE RECORD

First Match: April 11th, 1987 3-4 v Swindon Town (8,196)

Number of League games played at Ashton Gate by Bristol Rovers: 1 .

To counteract any potential crowd trouble and allow for an extra large gate, the match v. Swindon Town was subsequently moved here from Twerton Park.

Still want a tenner.

Thats not right............i am going to check this out!!!

If they wanted to avoid crowd trouble they would hardly allow Swindon and Rovers to play at Ashton gate.........

Got Peter Coynes autograph after........

I'll stick with police advice. Come on surely others must remember. We had about 4000 there. I think the polive were concerned over the number of fans we'd take and where they would end up. As it transpired it was a crap decision as City and Rovers slugged it out in the main Grandstand. Mind you we won a great game and seeing two bunches of Brizzle half wits kicking shit out of each other added to the spectacle.
Flash, if I'm wrong I'm quite happy to buy you a beer.

Maybe we should ask Roger Malone!!?

My recall fwiw, was that Rovers only moved into Twerton that season, and moved it to Trashton, to accomodate a bigger crowd...no idea if it was on police advice, or just their own decision.

Title: Re: Top 3 away days/games
Post by: TownEnders.com on Sunday, October 26, 2008, 16:28:28
I've got the HTV coverage from before the game.... it seems to have been moved because of the state of the pitch at Twerton.... but though they show the mudbath, it's not 100% conclusive as they don't actually refer to that being the reason.

I can post to YouTube if you want to decide for yourselves!

1-0 win at west ham. Maskell free kick I think in the last minute.

Twas a penalty I think, with Chalkie winning the penalty after having just come on. And Nicky Hammond playing an absolute blinder to keep them out (They battered us).

I got a whack in the head from some West Ham bruiser after that match for being a gobby little cunt, it was well worth it  :D

There are 3 away games under Hoddle in 93, that standout and took place within a month or so.

Firstly, the win at Watford with the Chalkie White hatrick.

Secondly, the 0 - 0 draw at Brentford when we played for almost an hour with only 9 men!
Tactically superb and when you think that Mitchell and Chalkie were red carded, it was an
amazing 2nd half performance.Zippy should also have scored a winner near the end.

Third,as stated by others, the most amazing game i've ever seen, the 6 - 4 easter monday win
at Birmingham.

I've seen us 4 times at Upton Park and we've never lost!

The first time was the FA Cup 4th Round tie in Jan 75,one of my heroes Peter Eastoe scored a
very good equaliser.Scary stuff seeing Town fans getting kicked by the ICF, as they got off the coaches,
with the Old Bill just standing by.It was the main game on the Big Match the following day.

Secondly, the League Cup game in 78.We won 2 -1 Miller tore them to bits on the wing and Guthrie
had a running battle with Billy Bonds all game.No quarter given there.

One game that never seems to be mentioned was our 1 -1 draw at Highbury in the League Cup in 79.
Fantastic performance by the lads and we had thousands of Town fans on the Clock End.Jennings,Rice,
O'Leary,Sunderland and Stapleton were in the Arsenal side. What an atmosphere travelling back on the
Tube and at Paddington station after the game.

Idid mention that Arsenal match Alan....was there and i clearly remember Billy Tucker heading that equaliser....the replay that we won 4-3 was the finest match ive ever seen at the CG.

Title: Re: Top 3 away days/games
Post by: alanmayes on Sunday, October 26, 2008, 23:33:19
Thanks Leefer so you did.Do you remember the FA Cup games with Fulham?

Rodney Marsh,George Best and Bobby Moore all played. Two great games with them, 3 - 1 up at half time
at the Cottage, only to be pulled back to 3 - 3 and then the 5 - 0 replay win.

Also featured on the Big Match, was the game away at Malcolm Allisons Crystal Palace
side in 76.We opened the scoring with Trevor Anderson, only to go 3 -1 down and then
2 goals by David Syrett gave us a draw and Mossy even missed a penalty.
