Title: Oh dear...
Post by: juddie on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 09:57:15
Why would you say this?!

"I wish we could go back to last season where we won every game at home and then got murdered away from home," said Malpas.

Is that in the adver?

Quote
MAURICE Malpas admits he wishes he could turn back the clock to last season, as he bids to eradicate Town's "shocking" home form.

Four County Ground league games without a victory have left Town just a point outside the drop zone and, despite some impressive away results, the pressure from the terraces mounting on the manager.

The situation is a far cry from 2007-08 when, having taken over in Wiltshire in January, Malpas made the County Ground a real fortress but was unable to consistently pick up points on their travels.

And he believes everyone would be a lot happier if their fortunes were to be reversed once more.

"I wish we could go back to last season where we won every game at home and then got murdered away from home," said Malpas.

I would expect that the comment was almost certainly tongue in cheek.  The written word very often does not convey the full nuances of a comment.  I very much doubt Malpas has getting 'murdered away from home' as part of his game plan.  A bit of a non story, I'd say.

I agree Malpas/Flash, but I was surprised he'd even come out with it given the pressure he's under, it only serves to add fuel to the fire.

Just wasn't clever in my opinion. He's not overly clever when it comes to playing the media game.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: juddie on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 11:02:37
that's true DRS, but it could have been a throwaway comment that Malpas feels was insignificant, but that the Adver decide to make a meal off. Also, their questioning will always try and steer players to say certain things, that's just the way newspaper journalism is.

I don't blame the adver, they're only trying to fill pages, I just felt it was naive on Malpas' part in the current situation. I was incensed reading it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Not ideal when people are calling for you're head; that's the sort of thing you'd expect Kingy to say.

I agree with him in some respects. We picked up more points doing that than we have now.

However, I believe this comment has been taken out of context hugely. Probably the Adver singling out one line in a conversation to sex up a non-story. Probably about time I cancelled the delivery of that piss poor newspaper.

Post by: janaage on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 11:26:36
Oh come on, it's not that bad a thing to say, I understamd what he means, it'd be better for the average town fan if we won all our home games and lost away, that was more town fans would see decent football and the pressure would be off MM to a certain extent, not really worth the reaction some have given this sentence.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 11:31:39
Yeah, I read that as losing away is preferable to losing at home. And you can't really argue with that, more home losses increases the pressure in so many ways.
--
Did anyone hear the BBC RS Malpas clip this morning, telling players to top talking (to the press) and start playing? I kind of only half heard it,  did he say something about not caring if the players didn't respect him or something.?

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: DV on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 12:33:56
What he says makes sense.

At the moment we are losing at home and drawing away, which is 1point every 2 games

If we were winning at home and losing away that would be 3points every 3 games

Thus we'd have more points and be better off. Not difficult to understand now is it?

Yep, I heard the radio I assume it was in relation to what Coxy said, it was something along the lines of he not bothered about players to like him just win games, saying he will take stick from fan's as he can understand it......can't remember properly now that was 7.30 this morning !!

I imagine the pressure is getting to him and with players saying in the press they back him (why would they say any different if they want to play ?) he is probably frustrated with journo's keep bringing his position up rather than concentrate on the next game.

Until he can go on a winning run though and prove he has got what it takes to move stfc up the table then he will get stick.

I wish the press would also stop harping on about our away record being good as well, we've only won something like 2 games so it is not as if we are winning every game away and looking unbeatable away, christ we haven't even looked capable of keeping a clean sheet in any game yet.

"We are going to move forward. We are going to kill the players, coaching staff and anyone else."

Is that more the kind of statement that you are looking for? It's what the president of an Argentine club said recently about his struggling team, Rosario Central.

Title: Re: Oh dear...

No i wont get a grip, he is clueless we have lost 5 games in a row at home and he makes stupid flippant remarks about wanting to get beat. The bloke has not once come out and said hey i can only apologise for that performance its just the usual shite about working his tail off.

I suggest you get a grip and stop supporting such a inept individual.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: janaage on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 14:40:34
I haven't called anyone a moron DRS, I've just said I don't subscribe to the spit the dummy approach just because MM has said something in a way that you don't agree with.

To be completely honest I don't support Mr MM's tenureship at STFC anymore, I would shed no tears should he go, as I do think he's on borrowed time, but I'm still not gonna get worked up over nothing.  There's more important things to worry about than this.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: Fred Elliot on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 14:43:42
Agreed DRS

I have not been one of the boo boys or have chanted for his resignation, BUT the time has come for him to go and he is turning himself into a laughing stock which I find in all honesty completely fucking embarrasing.

I have admired your stance against the critics in the past JA, but even you must admit that your efforts to defend the undefendable are falling way way short

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: janaage on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, 16:21:50
Fred I'm not defending him at all, managerial wise.  I agree that it's time for him to either step aside or get someone else in to help him our big time and MM take a back seat.  But for the life of me I can't see what the big deal is about his comments today.  Jesus just take them with a pinch of salt, it's not as if he's confessed to being a Pox fan or a murderer, all he said was he wished we'd win at home and get murdered away compared to what's going on at present.

Maybe I am missing the point, in which case I'm kind of pleased as I really can't be arsed with getting all hot and bother about it.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: Ardiles on Thursday, October 16, 2008, 07:45:34
I'm with Jan and Tails.  If you're going to berate Malpas, berate him for his poor managerial record...and not for a sentence quoted in the local rag that was, most probably, tongue in cheek anyway.  I find the lynch mob mentality quite sad.  There are far worse things going on in the world than our poor run of form.  A little perspective would not go amiss.

Title: Re: Oh dear...

I am upset that a manager who has been in charge since January has moved the club backwards.

For that reason he has failed - so must go.

I will never believe anything i read in the Adver............

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: juddie on Thursday, October 16, 2008, 10:38:25
Jan, my point was this: like most people on here, I agree his time is running out, purely because results are not good enough.

My argument is that with things as they are, a minority of fans are looking for any reason to jump on his back and he's not helped himself by making tactless statements like this. We all knew what he meant, but for a man of his position he needs to be a bit more streetwise about what he says.

A lot of people think we're making too much of this. Maybe, but others don't, and they'll be the first ones to have a go at him if we go one down against Northampton next Tuesday.

That was all. I just don't think he's been overly clever.

Title: Re: Oh dear...
Post by: Spencer_White on Thursday, October 16, 2008, 17:28:19
Malpas seemed to infuriate Motherwell fans with his quotes to the press.

But I think he hasnt actually been too bad while at STFC, up until this week. He has just been dead boring so far but the pressure is starting to tell. Obviously this is a silly thing to say, and a basic ommision that we are going backwards, but I understand what he meant.

The comment on the BBC site about not being able to tell players which passes to make was much more worrying, because that interview came across to me that he doesnt know which way to turn.

Anyway, he does seem to be cracking up a bit. I feel a bit sorry for him, because Fitton still expects him to turn this around, and I just dont think Malpas has it in him. Must be dead stressful. Obviously he could just resign, but the bloke needs a job, just like we all do.
