Doesn't the drive pop out of the laptop as a separate entity?

Tans have you wiped the spunk off - a bit of propanol will get rid of most of the gunk and Fred is right you'll scratch the DVD if you try an play it with a paper clip

No not a paper clip, that's for opening the draw. We are looking for something to release the whole drive from the laptop.

Mine just sort of "unclips" from the caddy via a (pushed in so it's flush) tab button.

I guess it is possible there are other types of DVD drive, maybe some require you to open the laptop case or something. What laptop make/model is it?

A lot these days you have to open the case to replace the drive, I think more and more manufacturers seem to be doing this so they earn money from people sending it to their "offcial" repairers - but if you know what your doing then you can save a lot of money obviously

Can't find a manual but I suspect PTP is correct and it is internal.

Looks like a replacement drive would be about £35 quid

But you'd have to be confident in what you are doing a) to make suer you get the right drive and b)  if you need to open the case to replace as they can be fiddly little buggers.

Quite how much they'd charge you to get it done for you is anyone's guess.

Underneath the DVD drive on the bottom of the laptop should be a screw(s) holding it in place or a switch you can flick to remove it.

Undo that/those and you should be able to remove the drive
