Title: Mobile Experts
Post by: Tails on Monday, October 6, 2008, 13:01:12
Will be needing a new phone shortly as my contract ends, and was hoping for some advice from any of you mobile experts (if there are any).

I'm thinking of going with T-Mobile as I know a few of the staff there and they'll help me out a bit.. But I'm not sure on the handset. I've been reccomended Sony Ericsson C902 which is supposed to be quite handy and a Samsung Tocco which is one of these new touchscreen ones.

I really don't have a clue, so help would be appreciated!

Ha ha!!

Are their any decent mobile recently released or do they come out nearer Christmas these days.

I'm still happy with my N95 8gb, had no problems with it at all **touches wood**.  But it's not that new anymore must be newer phones out.

I got an iphone 16gb last week and although it's a bit big it's a good gadget and I'm liking it so far.

I have a Sony Ericsson and won't get one again. It has a habit of turning itself off and the operating system is frustratingly sluggish.

I had a K800i and it was bloody good. Took loads of abuse and just didn't break or anything (except the back cover kept coming loose towards the end of its life).

However the K850 is awful. It's so bloody slow it reminds me of my old (cheap) O2 pay as you go phone I got to replace another phone which was showing its age. The cameras good if the viewfinder opens. I sometimes have to shake it to get it to work.

That's the one I've got as well. On my third handset now and still got 6 months left on the pissing contract.

Shame though because the memory sticks are really neat, 4gb one is no bigger than a finger nail.

Have you had a mooch at the Apps. store yet? There's a handy little free one called AroundMe that finds your location and lists local petrol stations, restaurants, hotels, cafes, pubs etc..

Probably quite handy if you're pissed and lost as it will direct you to the nearest pub. I love my iPhone.

Yeah put that on along with all the obvious ones so far like the facebook, myspace, ebay ones etc and the trains one which is especially useful as it tells you the train times, whether their on time, the expected arrival time and even the platform number.

I've got one at the moment and it's crap. The handset itself is falling apart, it switches itself off all the time and it randomly drops calls. Kinda put me off to be honest.

Dazzza said "Don;t touch the N96 - it's crap"

Why is that the case with a lot of Nokia first versions (especially of the n-series).  The n95 had mixed reviews until the 8gb version came out then it won pretty much universal praise.  I wonder if the n96 8gb (if released) will follow a similar story.

FWIW I wouldn't buy a new n series phone until the updated version came out, if that makes sense.

It comes with 16GB memory.

The new 5800 has a similar spec, looks a lot better and is far more reliable than the N96.  Plus you can upgrade the memory with a 16GB SD card so there’s no comparison.

Nokia really are a bunch of charlatans at times with their phones.  They produce good average spec handsets, the best  in recent years being the 6300 but the symbian and higher spec models are a pile of poo.  They’re under incredible pressure to get them out and become “first to market” with that spec of handset e.g. first device with 8MP camera or first device with 16GB internal memory etc…

If they’re a couple of months delayed other operators have beaten them to the crunch and I’d imagine they lose a chunk of sales and kudos as a result.

The operators rush them through without testing properly as they can’t afford to be the last one to offer the device.

If you apply the logic of remaining 6 months behind the latest top spec devices when you get a phone you usually can’t go to far wrong.

I think they can be a little hit and miss tho Otans.

Like Dazzza says I've always wondered about their testing procedures.
