Title: does anyone else still buy CDs?
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, October 4, 2008, 16:43:46
people at work are bemused and confused by the fact that not only do i still buy music, i buy it on CD. however, i don't own a hifi and i now use my ipod in my car. i buy the CD, burn it to mp3 - v0 vbr, of course - and then the CD sits somewhere gathering dust. so all i listen to is the 75gb worth of mp3s that i have.

i can't quite explain why i love buying CDs so much. i've found a nice independent record store in town and i enjoy going in there, spending ages browsing for stuff that takes my fancy and then chatting with the staff and getting recommendations from them as well. despite it being more expensive, it's much more exciting than ordering stuff off amazon and waiting for them to arrive.

i'm not a collector, i don't buy vinyl and don't usually buy anything but albums / compilations. i'm in the process of getting all of tom waits' studio albums, live albums and soundtracks.

i still download music as well and use a great torrent site. however, i find more and more now that i download something then buy it.

i can't be the only one surely?

My iPod died yesterday.

Its some how restored its self to factory settings and then every time i plug it into the PC is says its corrupt and needs re-formatting which I cant do if it wont connect to the PC!!

Sorry, that has nothing to do with CDs. I havent bought one for a few years...

I still buy the odd peice of vinyl, but haven't bought a cd for 3 or 4 years, most of that is due to the fact i already own about 5-600 and have all the albums i really like. There's very little released these days that i like enough to own so playing them on youtube normalyy does me now.

I only by CD's, I feel download music don't sound as good (it probably does, but it doesn't feel right).
I had two CD's arrive in the post this morning in fact.

i download lots of singles, but i still buy all my albums on cd.

Not sure why though, as i put them straight away onto my i-pod and generally listen to them on it.

I've not really bought anything for a while.

If I want an album though, I'll get it on cd. Sounds better than mp3.

Still buy 3 or 4 every month. Just have to have a case and sleeve notes to complete the music listening experience.

Bought probably two CD's in the last 3 years, being Dinosaur Jr - Without a Sound and The Martinis - Smitten. Will look to buy Weezer's latest at some point and possibly the new Breeders.

Cheers - I will give it a go.

There is a kind of logic to how I buy my cd's each month. I aim for one current album; one to replace/duplicate an old favourite on vinyl (or being of a certain age a long lost one on cassette!); and one old classic or recommended album that I missed first time round (or was too young to have known about).

The trojan calypso boxset is top notch, there's a couple of very good Lord Kitchener tracks as well as one of my all time favourite songs in Lord Creator's Big Bamboo. If you like jamaican music you really can't go wrong with the trojan boxsets especially as you can often pick them up for 7 or 8 quid, I've just had a quick count and was surprised that I've got as many as 59 of them but there's not a duff one in there.
I still buy loads of CD's as well as second hand vinyl, I prefer the sound over mp3 and still want to get the cover and sleeve notes. What goes in my favour is that the vast majority that I buy is music from the 60's and 70's and you can pick a lot of it up dirt cheap, I've just had a few CD's delivered that were £2.99 each and you struggle to get a pint of weak lager for that nowadays.

i still buy cd's. i have a box of vinyl but try to resist getting any more as i dont actually have the ability to play any of it due to not owning a record player at the current time. i view the vinyl as an investment, cds too in a way.

the last cd i bought was the low end theory by a tribe called quest. i need to economise and purge half of my cd collection on ebay. perhaps i'll sort through it today.

Vinyl for me, over 2000 lp's and nearly 3000 singles, mind I do have over 800 cd's, i just never stopped loving the sound of vinyl, and the fact that albums and singles were so tactiles, I know all about the argument of portability, but people listening to music on their mobiles?...........forget it!!

My last one must have been Glasvegas which i listened to about once and never bothered again. Maybe twice i dunno can't remember. The Verve's new one as well again i have only listened to it twice. I still buy CDs when i buy music. Can't be arsed with that dowloading lark. It's easier to go to the bloody shop and pick it up. Bloc Party will probably my next purchase.

I still buy CDs, purely for two reasons - I like having them there to choose from and I like the quality they produce through a hifi.

Just made an impulse purchase - Floored Genuis - a Julian Cope/Teardrop Explodes compilation. He was/is barking, but the music is ace.

I still purchase CD’s but have no CD player either.

I think its part magpie mentality.   I’ve rarely paid for an MP3 download and don’t associate them with actually “owning” the music.  Sure I’ll download new stuff, give it a whirl and even pay for it for convenience.   But if it’s a winner it gets purchased on CD and even if it’s only mildly cock twitching I’ll usually give it a purchase at some point.  More likely if it’s spotted on offer.

Although I have no discernable taste in music, it jumps from all sorts of genres and eras,  I still like the little rituals of owning music that I’d describe as similar to having a sociable smoke over a beverage or eight.  The CD case, the inlay, filing it away in some sort of personalised anal system, having it on display so people can peruse your collection and see what your tastes are (in my case none or disturbing at best) and even the physical act of loaning out CD’s and sharing music.  Ok you can burn and email MP3’s but it’s just not the same!

Finally the elitist perspective is that any gibbon can download 250GB of music from Torrents but actually owning the music on CD shows a discerning choice, quality and statement of sorts even if it is Aqua.

My place of work halved their CD stock this year but the big names still shift loads.

Oasis sold a shit load today and Kings of Leon are still doing well. Even Bette Midler's still selling!

... I've got my stick ready to fend off the old folks when Daniel O'Donnell releases his usual Christmas album.

Where is the cheapest place to down load musci these days, I used to use a russian website but they started insisting you had to load money upfront into an account and I only want an album now and again - there must be cheap download sites that make it cheaper than buying the CD ?

Just had a real blast from the past delivered today, to replace an old album I have on vinyl - In Evil Hour by the Room. Really brilliant album, I'll get a chance to listen to it in the car on the way to the match tomorrow.
