Title: The Eiger Post by: leefer on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 18:46:21 Or close to it!...been in Devon for too days and after a delivery in Watchet had to go along the coast to Lynmouth, but that entails going over Portluck Hill which in 20 years of driving ive managed to avoid.
This time i had to tackle it and with a 1 in 4 gradient i seriously shat myself driving up it,it felt like the lorry was going to topple backwards, when thats finished you have to tackle another 1 in 4 gradient at Contisbury before driving along the cliffs into Lynmouth In between Exmoor was stunning, though i hope its a while before i see it in the lorry again Just wondered if you lot have had any scary driving moments at home or abroad? Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: ronnie21 on Thursday, September 18, 2008, 20:29:12 There's one or two passes in Scotland that are worth avoiding unless you have a change of underwear with you!

Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, September 19, 2008, 07:17:35 I love Porlock Hill, often go for a drive there of a weekend (in a car not a rig mind you), a lovely area and only about 25 miles or so from me so I do it regularly, but I wouldnt want to do it in anything over 7 tons!
Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Leggett on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:01:02 stunning drives and scary drives can both be found in Romania.
my dad ran a charity that took medical supplies and stuff like that out there, i went with him in '96, there were like 6 adults and me and my twin sister in a big minibus for 3 days travelling from swindon to romania. boring as hell, but once we hit austria/hungary the scenery was amazing. then we hit romania. the roads were terrible, we were travelling down what would be classed as an A-road, it was so thin 2 trucks struggled to get passed each other, the edge of the road was crumbling away and there was a 2-foot drop into a field either side. and the nobody can drive for shit out there either. travelling through a little village, we were going round a tight corner around a church when a fucking great articulated lorry comes barreling round the corner in the middle of the road. our driver swerved onto the very edge of the road/pavement (there was no distinction between the two :P) and slammed on the brakes, missed us by inches. i was unaware of that, as moments before i'd undone my seatbelt to take my jumper off, i ended up stuck in the footwell of the sliding side door. i had to get pulled out :( Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Leggett on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:09:51 oh and the road from leominster to aberystwyth is good fun, takes a while but the valleys are stunning (especially the time i went after it had snowed a couple of days previous, everywhere was covered but the roads were clear. perfect!) and the road is a fucking good laugh, proper twisty stuff. my sister went to uni in aber, my mum went to see her and took 5ish hrs to get there from swindon, my dad took just under 4, i did it in about 3 1/2 :D i calmed down a touch when i saw a copper stood just before a bend on the side of a hill, got round the corner and there was a rover on its roof about 20 feet from the edge of the road. still, fucking enjoyable journey :D
Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: janaage on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:11:09 You make lorry driving seem ace, like the film Convoy or something . I said Pig pen, this here's the rubber duck an' I m about to put the hammer down!! One of the best road films ever!! I used to go lorry driving with my dad when I was little, was brilliant!! Felt like King of the road being up so high, listening to his favourite country and western songs, like teddy bear and Phantom 309, a real "JCB" moment if you know what I mean. Health and safety have put a stop to all that now and these companies don't let you take passengers anymore - spoil sports. Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: janaage on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:12:38 That'd be ace! Any chance? Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Sippo on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:28:32 Convoy is ace. Fact!
Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:34:12 I once had the scary experience of being on an ace country road near Hastings. I was doing a pretty high speed, somewhere in excess of 125mph. I was flying down a long straight when from behind the bus coming towards me, and not too far in front of me, a Sierra decided he was overtaking.
He was suddenly in my lane and seemed likely to have a smash. I hit the breaks as hard as i could because the bloke was gonna try and make it. Within moments it was clear we gonna have a nasty one. I was caught in 2 minds, take the car off the road by going over a verge and through a hedge and at a speed sure to put us in hospital, or sit and hope. I stayed on the road, but my god, the car got around the coach with what was but a few metres at most, i swear i closed my eyes and braced for impact, but i doubt it because i still remember how close we were. I pulled over as soon as i could and me and my mate sat there and smoked a fuck load of fags and just shook with adrenaline. You can't buy that kind of experience; it still makes me tingle now. We were very fucking lucky. Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: janaage on Friday, September 19, 2008, 08:48:51 Convoy is ace. Fact! 10:4 big buddy!!Wasn't the last line of the film "quack, quack" when Rubber Duck was at the back of the bus, when everyone thought he was dead? I'm gonna buy it on dvd now, brings back memories!! Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: Leggett on Friday, September 19, 2008, 10:39:13 oh yea, my dad was a trucker too when he left the army. he had an articulated tipper, he put an ad in a local paper offering his services, the first week is was put down as "arctic kipper for hire", the 2nd week was "arctic tipper for hire", he then withdrew the ad. no word of a lie!

Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: RedRedRobin on Friday, September 19, 2008, 14:04:10 I know those hills Leefer; I lived in Lymouth and Lynton for part of the eighties. . Your right to be scared of driving along there. I had a restaurant at the bottom of Countisbury Hill, In about 85 a lorry driver and his son crashed through the trees down the hill having lost his brakes. They both died immediately. Ive often seen lorries blown over on the top during high winds. It seems ok for cars but I woul;d take a lorry round the other way.
Title: Re: The Eiger Post by: leefer on Friday, September 19, 2008, 15:29:22 Funny that Robin...someone told me that and i thaught they were winding me up!..i usually do go round but i had a drop of in Watchet,so was only down the road....the other road through Exmoor is a weight limit.
