Title: The Family
Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 20:36:44
Anyone watching the first episode tonight on channel 4?

What a moody family!

Staged reality tv at it's worse.

Is that where they're redoing that classic documentary from decades ago?

I think this programme about a family of disfunctional stupid twats that need a good shoeing is aimed at families of disfunctional stupid twats that need a good shoeing.

The producers are clearly hoping that if you look through peoples windows while they are watching it you get one of those wierd effects like when you point a movie camera at its own output, or like in a hall of mirrors.  Really its actually a deeply philosophical contemplation of infinity.

The difference is that the original 1974 family (from Reading, I think) took part in a ground breaking programme.  The 'reality' genre has now been done to death.  Can't really believe that there are producers out there still thinking 'I know, I've got this great idea' and then go ahead and make another series.  It's all a bit dull.

Oh yeah. Obviously. And you've got the paradox of that the more the family are aware of the filming, and how it will affect their lives after, the less "reality" it will be.

Not telling a family they were being recorded might have some interest in it, although it would be a bit harsh on the family in question.
