Title: Stockport
Post by: DV on Saturday, September 13, 2008, 23:10:44
So we've all aired our opinions about todays game, so with that in mind....apart from the obvious injuries permitting what team would you play away at Stockport if you were the manager because lets be honest....whoever you are you know more than Malpas, especially you Bart....

Over to you guyd....

they won 3-0 away from home today. that worries me a bit.

i'd play the same team and tactics except brezovan in for smith.

Hmmm

Im un decided on the keepers. I've seen Brez play 4 games this season and Smith 2. They have both made howlers and cost us. However Smith performance at Franchise was better than any of Brez performances this season.

I'd be tempted to stick with Smith....

However, what ever defence we use doesnt work and im starting to think about 3 centre back and wing backs. It effectivly adds an extra defender but takes away the wingers.

McNamees a match winner on his day but only when given service

Smith

Amankwaah

Kanyuka (if fit, if not Morrison)
Ifil
Aljofree

Smith

Easton
Nalis
Timlin

Cox
Paynter

Now I've written that down im totally un convinced by that back 5 and the 3 centre backs. I feel much more comfortable with Vincent in there....but hes injured and the time its taking makes me wonder if hes done for.

Usually when I make these types of posts and un convince myself I usually delete them.

To bulk up id be tempted to go a proper flat 5 in midfield but you really cant drop Cox or Paynter imo individually and as a parntership they are playing well. I just wish we'd stop using Paynter as a target man so much

Brezovan (if fit)

Amankwaah
Morrison
Aljofree
Smith

McNamee
Timlin
Nalis
Pook

Cox
Paynter

Pook, as a right winger?

Pook, as a right winger?
No right winger, play lop-sided, Leeds managed it quite nicely today dont you think. Instead of playing with two wingers you get one your forwards to move wide (interchange Paynter/Cox), it gives you better control of the ball in the middle of the park and stops those wasted long ball tactics which very rarely comes off.

Its been a bit odd so far this season, for example at centre half and in goal we have strength in depth...so we have replacements if one or two of the players are being a bit shit....yet some how they're all being shit at the same time.

I mean on paper Aljofree, Ifil, Kanuyka and Morrison doesnt look bad for centre halves at this division. Ifil was injured and Kanuyka and Morrison failed to impress. Ifil has been shakey....Aljofree has been ummm Aljoree!!

Brez and Smith in the last 2 years have both been capable keepers and both looked very solid between the sticks. Both look utter gash this season

what the fuck is going on

Fuck knows...........I will be there but as I've said elsewhere I get the distinct impression Malpas is on borrowed time with a lack of confidence in the boardroom. Brez must start though next weekend as Smith costs us a goal each league game he plays.

I have to say Im glad I'm not here for this one.  I think I need a break from our shoddy defending and being out of the country ensures I can't possibly go!

Title: Re: Stockport

It's a difficult choice to make, as people have said.

I'll say Brez in goal, but I'm not too fussed who plays there.

Smith
Ifil
Morrison
Amankwaah

McNamee
Nalis
Easton
I'm tempted to say Marshall, although I can't 100% convince myself it's a good idea.

Cox
Paynter

Having said all that, I wouldn't be unhappy to see Peacock starting.

Title: Re: Stockport

Brezovan

Amankwaah
Kanyuka
Aljofree
Smith

McNamee
Easton
Timlin
Mcgoven

Cox
Paynter

Title: Re: Stockport
Post by: Batch on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 11:37:13
If Brez really wants out then he shouldn't be picked.

Ignoring that though,

Brezovan

Amankwaah
Ifil
Aljofree
Smith

McNamee
Easton
Nallis
Mcgoven

Cox
Paynter

Which keeper aside is what we had yesterday.

It's difficult to know how to change it. I'm now of the opinion that:

the Paynter/Cox partnership is our only option up front and is working. Corr may add something different at some point, but now is not the time.

Midfield is frustrating. I personally think playing JPM, Nallis and Easton/Timlin is ruining the ballance/shape of the midfield. But Marshall and McNamee is a non starter away from home. So what else can you do? I think it's why Malpas occasionally plays Easton on the right.

Defence I guess we have Smith and Amankwah by default at full backs. And they are doing ok (Smith is my player of the year so far!). The middle is a pain. Ifil and Kanyuka together scare the crap out of me. Aljofree seems unable to organise the defence let alone the team (give Easton the armband). So you go with the best combination, which is still Ifil and Aljofree. Talking of Ifil, howler aside, he wasn't as bad as people say yesterday.

Keeper can't keep chopping and changing, but if howlers are happening then the other keeper deserves the shirt. Otherwise what is the point of two good keepers.

jpm did ok today didn't he?

didn't see much of the ball as usual but neither did macca.

i agree that peacock could do a job at centre-half although only in an emergency/last resort...have we reached that point? we've not yet tried the kanyuka/morrison partnership.

if brez is angling for a move, he's not likely to sulk if he gets a chance in goal - won't he want to impress potential scouts?

i'm in manchester next weekend. can't see myself popping along to stockport though.

Is Vincent still injured? It's clear that Ifil needs an experienced head next to him to talk him through the game. Aljofree isn't it, and to be fair if he starts he could probably do with the same thing.

My team would be:

Brez

Amankwaah
Aljofree
Kanyuka
Smith

Marshall
Timlin
Peacock
McNamee

Cox
Paynter

Subs:
Smith
Corr
Ifil
Easton
Nalis

Title: Re: Stockport

Brezovan

Amankwah
Aljofree
Kanyuka
Smith

Marshall
Nalis
Easton
Timlin
McNamee

Cox

As much as I think Paynter is playing well, and certainly doesn't deserve to be dropped, the defence is so shoddy it needs cover in numbers to allow shit mistakes to have a 2nd chance of being dealt with.  To that end I'd sit Nalis in front of them and give him the armband, Timlin and Easton to run their nuts off.  Paynter could be the 1 up top if I could be convinced Cox would do the wide of the 3 on the right without it making him become unhappy - he looked decidedly irritated by the other players yesterday, and although I hate pandering to players, he's so good at this level we have to keep him happy.

Title: Re: Stockport
Post by: DV on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 13:54:45
Vincent has been injured for ages now. What with being 33 I dunno....the amount of time hes been out injured cant be good.

Fuck knows why Brez suddenly wants a move, now after the transfer window is shut? and who would want him, he's been shit this season....no one can have been impressed enough to try and sign him

Everyone seems to want Kanuyka in the team yet a few weeks ago after he had played everyone wanted him out the team.

Title: Re: Stockport
Post by: Rich Pullen on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 14:05:40
I'm sadly convinced that, like Roberts, Vincent is essentially finished as a credible first team option... we'll flit in and out of the 1st XI throughout the season never able to complete a run in the team. Hoping I'm wrong.

I doubt there'll be any major changes. It'll be interesting to see the goalkeeper situation... depending on what is really going on with Peter Brezovan.

Title: Re: Stockport
Post by: RobertT on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 14:07:14
I just think Kanyuka would work better with Aljofree for some reason.  Ifil with Vincent would be the best out of the available players but Ifil looks worse when with Aljofree.  The 4-5-1 would also have Nalis sat infront of them to guide them.  I think he has more chance of doing that with Kanyuka than Ifil right now.

Realistically we haven't a deal of choice, unless MM wants to gamble, and he isn't secure enough in the job to do that.

Part of his remit laid down by Fitton is to develop our own players...with this in mind Callum Kennedy and Sean Morrison should start at Stockport.

JI for all his defects should start....remember what happened at Edgeley, a couple of seasons back.  Morisson can pass the ball...not sure have we tried the JI SM combo yet.

David Duke went off injured, so you'd bring Grant Smith on and play him at left back wouldnt you....no

You'd bring on just back from injury un fit Heywood put him in the centre, move Ifil the centre back to right back and move the right back Paul Mitchell to left back!

I think Reg was on about the 3-0 defeat 2 seasons ago.........Westwood and Ifil playing together was a disaster. Tbh though Ashley Westwood was awful anyway.

didn't king switch the formation from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 to accomadate Heywood in to Defence.

Yep...although the last 4 visits to Edgeley have all been adventures, we've conceded 10goals....scored 12 mind.

ifil is like a youth teamer that wont ever get better.asking him to play alongside morrison would be bad for both players.his own game is bad enough, let alone trying guide a younger partner.we have already seen with him alongside kanyuka that it didn't work.
it's ifil alongside a leader, or him out of the team altogether i reckon.

One of the guys from Vital Football (the company not the County reporter) is a Stockport fan and was going to meet up for a few beers and make a weekend of it but cant be bothered after y-day! Plus I am leaving Vital Football when I find someone else to take over the site.
