I don't usually read this, suprisingly I'm a Telegraph man, but my Gym gives them away free at reception and I picked one up this morning. Flicking through on my way back to the car, I find a whole load of pictures of our squad on the training field.

When I look a bit more closely it turns out to be another big PR advantage of the 442 deal. 3 whole pages of the "Extra" section dedicated to the exploits of the 442 journo who went on the pre-season tour with the squad.

I don't know whether it's a straight re-orint of the 442 article, but a nice bit of publicity anyway.

 I started to have my doubts after the no show of the fledgling thrush photos.

I was hoping people had forgotten about the poor little thrushes. Sadly they never made it. I came home one night and one was dead on the drive. When I checked the nest there was one dead in there and the other was missing. They weren't anywhere near big enough to be fledged so my guess is a fucking magpie got them. Mum and Dad never came back.

As for my choice of reading material; what choice is there? The Times is out of the question because of the Murdoch thing, The Guardian is insufferable with it's whinging liberal handwringing. The Independent is just shit. The Torygraph is the only contender in the quality newspaper category. And it's still and proper broadsheet, and it's got a good cryptic crossword.

Most importantly though, a bit like with the Financial Times, the news, analysis and opinion pieces are nice and clear in the Telegraph. It's written from the perspective of the capitalist class, but at least you know where they stand. Better that than having to read something by the likes of David Aaronovitch, a pretend lefty who's actually one of the most vicious reactionary journalists working in the media today.

I'm with Lumps. The Telegraph has bias like any paper but it's clear about its bias and at least covers the facts of stories well so that you can disentangle the "angle" from the news. It's foreign coverage is excellent, as is the sports coverage. And where would I be without those indispensable reader offers "Mahogany child storage unit - no more untidy Filipino boy slaves cluttering up the place when not in use, only 59.99"?

I'm particularly fond of the little "Telegraph Offers" catelogue that sometimes falls out of the Sunday paper. I can't think of anything that I would actually buy out of it, but I find it somehow reassuring.

On the subject of old Trots with unlikely affections for  the slightly fogieish side of English life, did anyone hear Mark Steele on TMS the other week. Class. Aggers seemed to warm to him whilst at the same time being ever so slightly bemused by his presence.

I have a lot of time for Mark Steele.  His brand of patriotic socialism - which confuses the hell out of a lot of people ('You're a socialist...don't you hate everything?') - is not that different to Billy Bragg's.  And I've got a lot of time for him as well.

He's funny and his heart's in the right place, even if his head is a bit confused due to him having spent so long in the SWP and therefore not really ever getting to understand some of the fundamental ideas of Marxist-Leninism. As I said before "State-Capitalism" I ask you.

He's also a good mate of Swindon boy and a former school friend Mark Jones / Lamarr, so he's obviously also a fairly understanding a tolerant sort of bloke.
