Title: QPR, weve got a great chance.
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, August 11, 2008, 07:55:52
Was saying to someone saturday that since that Martin Ling overhead kick in 1996, we have only knocked out higher league opposition twice in the major cup competitions since. Twice in 12 years, while weve been easy pickings for teams below us.

Last year we got well beaten by Charlton League cup, who looked a class apart. But I cant see that happening this time.

Just to say I hope the fans get behind the lads in numbers and in vocal support tuesday because I think it could be a rare win against a team from a higher league.

I agree. QPR are nowhere as good as their joint favoirte odds for the championship suggest.

Hopefully Dowie will field a weakened team as well. If we play like we did saturday and have a bit of luck we'll be in with a chance.

I think it's going to be tough, very tough. But I think Malpas will play a strong team (based on previous comment) and they are beatable. So bring it on.

Judging from their "Rival football" site they're likely to make a good few changes to the team that played Saturday and give some younger players a go. Fans don't seem over confident about the game, and seem to think of the County Ground as a bit of a bogey ground for them.

i think we'll be easily beaten 2-0.

to be completely honest i'm more worried about cheltenham, win tomorow is merely a bonus in my eyes.

can't wait for a few pints and atleast a fiver in the dukey though.

Cheltenham is more important without a doubt - but Malpas has indicated that they're going for it in all the trophies - so, if QPR aren't so keen on the League Cup there might be a chance for us.

Who knows - good performance against a team like QPR with a big crowd could do us the world of good for future home games.

Even if it is a weakened QPR side, still a good test and at £10 you can't complain really.

Would I be right in assuming that Carling Cup matches aren't covered by the PTV contract, therefore it should be broadcast on BBC RS over the net? Anyone know for sure?

Weve just come off a season which went completely flat. I cant understand the indifference to games like this. Theres got to be more to supporting Swindon than these seasons that finnish in february?

We have great home form and with the luck of a few draws we could really do something.

We wonder why the Town doesnt care about STFC, but a cup run and beating some high profile sides would make them take notice more than us getting in the play offs in my opinion.

I think tuesday night is more important than saturday, but I know Il be in the minority. The fans say the league games are more important, but I dont see much excitement about the league games from the fans at the moment?

In many ways you're right Spencer...up until about a dozen years ago we had a decentish cup record...since then, embarrassing.

Times change though, and usually not to our benefit....classic example being the Leeds game, under King. Traditionally our excellent performance would have been rewarded by a replay, not now though it goes extra time and pens, which was bound to favour the higher  div side.  Had we got Leeds back with every chance of rolling them over, a generation of fans could have experienced a decent atmosphere.

Then we have managers who think they're Wenger and field weakened teams, WTF is that about...Lou Macari partly turned us around on the back of beating Sunderland and Sheff Wed in the LC....got the fans going, got the team going. Unfortunately, we're now in a rut and it's difficult to get out of.

Was Southampton in the FA Cup our last decent "run"

Title: Re: QPR, weve got a great chance.

Things are obviously looking more positive around the club now than they have been for a long time, but I think that despite the takeover and a big influx of new season ticket holders there seems to be a lack of focus about our support for some reason.

Might just be that I've got some weird odd twisted and incorrect perception of things, but I think a nice minor cup upset early on in the season could really help line everything up nicely.

Title: Re: QPR, weve got a great chance.
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, August 11, 2008, 12:48:56
Agree 100 per cent.

I think a lot of supporters have kept going the last 10 years out of this determination not to see 'Swindon Town die on my watch'. I think the fans are struggling for motivation at the moment.

But now we could start to have a bit of fun. As you say a good cup run could make everyone remmember what weve been missing and wake the fans up a bit.

Title: Re: QPR, weve got a great chance.

Agree. An early season run of form in any or all competiions should help some of our fans "believe" again.

If we manage that we might be looking at a sell out for leeds early next month

Reg, If Mo plays a second string side I will be absolutely gutted.

Weve got loads of good players to come into the team at a later date when things need freshening up. Keep the winning team together.

We have loads of QPR fans in my neck of the woods, they think Swindon are a joke side, so much so that two of them have taken huge bets off me giving me a three goal handicap start. If we beat them they will double the return.
QPR fans are the new Chelsea armchair I know it all 'we have loads of money' tits at the moment.

Really? Ive always thought QPR fans to be "proper"

I know they have all this money now,to be honest it looks a bit like the heart of QPR is being ripped out by the money men and their 70k exec boxes and 200%  rise in season tickets. Then again I dont really know that much about it...

Ive a feeling MM will play a proper team,I hope so anyway.Sadly im working so will have to gauge the game from the ooohs and aaahs I hear across the railway line.I'll try and start a chant going though..

BREAKING NEWS: Ifil out of cup tie
By Anthony Marshall

JEREL Ifil is out of tomorrow night's Carling Cup first-round tie with QPR.

The defender has picked up a groin problem and will sit out the County Ground clash.

With Pat Kanyuka also sidelined, youngster Sean Morrison is in line to start against the Championship side.

Elsewhere, Kevin Amankwaah and Chris Allen return to the matchday squad.

Meanwhile, boss Maurice Malpas is waiting to hear whether his move for Eastleigh winger Mark Marshall has been a success, with progress expected later today or tomorrow.

Kanyuka - any idea what the issue is ?

Cheers for that Sussex, I haven't been on Thisis for about 10 minutes so wasn't aware of this "breaking news".

Hmmn, that makes our defence pretty thin, but Vincent can play centre half, Morrison's available too, so we should be alright for the bit, problem should we get another defensive injury though.

A few friends of mine are Rangers fans and are gutted about whats happening at the club. They feel as if their club has been taken away from them, and it doesn't feel like QPR anymore. The final nail will be if they move...they have a great, proper football ground and as someone else said previously, usually a good bunch of proper fans but these are now struggling to afford to go and the club is changing rapidly.

I've always liked QPR, and I absolutely love Loftus Road (although I did read somewhere that some of the seats there have a dreadful view).  But you can see the club changing at a crazy pace, they'll be unrecognisable in a few years, LR will be a distant memory and west London will have two annoying clubs.

I saw Parejo score for Real in one of those pre season friendly tournaments, looked a useful lad, if a bit lightweight.  To send him out to England to a club managed by Iain Dowie, is strange though....the CCC is a hard physical league, not much like La Liga at all, perhaps theythink the experience might toughen him up.

I agree that a bit of a cup run is exactly what this club needs at the moment to spark it into life. I think you're right Reg about those wins against Sunderland and Wednesday in '85. That really was the spring board for us to go on an unbelieveable run in the league. It's easy to forget that all-conquering Championship season had been pretty non-descript to say the least until that point. The atmosphere at both those games was absolutely incredible. I would just love to see nights like that return to the CG.

It sounds like Malpas fully intends to play a full strength side and I bet QPR will have a few first teamers out, including this Parejo twat hopefully (whoever the hell he is). There's no reason why we shouldn't win and go on a bit of a run.

Dowie Speaks...

Quote
DOWIE: WE'LL BE READY
Posted on: Mon 11 Aug 2008

Iain Dowie is demanding a vast improvement from his side when the R's lock horns with Swindon Town in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.

Dowie admits Rangers were 'below-par' in beating Barnsley on the opening day of the Coca Cola Championship campaign - and he certainly won't allow his players to rest on their laurels against the League One outfit.

"A Cup run is vitally important for this Football Club," Dowie told www.qpr.co.uk.

"I've had fairly decent success in this competition over the last few years and I want to continue that with QPR.

"We weren't at our best on Saturday and there is a lot of room for improvement.

"Defensively we weren't as good as I know we can be and I'll be looking for an improvement on Tuesday."

Rangers bowed out to Leyton Orient at the first hurdle last season, but Dowie is keen to avoid a similar embarrassment this season.

"A good Cup run is very important to me, and we'll be heading to Swindon with a very strong squad, make no mistake.

"They've brought a couple of new faces in, and it certainly won't be easy for us at their place.

"It's important that we really impose ourselves on the match from the opening whistle. I want to see us get the ball down and pass it, and be creative like we were against Barnsley at the weekend.

"The County Ground isn't an easy place to go, but we head there in good spirits after our win on Saturday."

Dowie will no doubt take inspiration from his memorable run in the Carling Cup last season with Coventry City.

Michael Mifsud's brace at Old Trafford helped knock Manchester United out at the third round stage, before the Sky Blues eventually came unstuck against West Ham United in round four.

"Anything is possible in football," he said.

"The early rounds come quite thick and fast in this competition and if things go your way, before you know it you come up against one of the big boys.

"We'll take each game as it comes though and that starts with Swindon Town at The County Ground."

Team News

Hogan Ephraim could return to the squad after missing out on Saturday due to shin splints, while Samuel Di Carmine and Damion Stewart are free to return following the completion of their respective bans.

Long-term injury victims Rowan Vine and Akos Buzsaky remain sidelined, while Martin Rowlands is suspended

Since when has Bovril been Veggie? It always used to have beef extract, as well as yeast extract in it. It was the big distinguising feature between Bovril and Marmite.

Wasn't there an advert for Bovril many years ago which featured Chris Bonington on some mountain ?

"How that beefy taste cheered us" I think was the line

Bovril did de-beef for a bit, but AFAIK they put it back again.

Yup

You obviously knew that PaulD, or have you just had a nasty surprise ?

No I didn't know they'd re-beefed. But then I've not had Bovril for years either so it's all good. Except for the fact that now I've realised I can't have it, I've become strangely nostalgic for it. Damn Bovril pangs

So in summary the change from Bovril to Oxo shouldn't affect your taste buds that much.  It's just a pepsi to coca-cola style switch.

Let's call off the 8,000 people strong protests orgainsed for tonight then yeah?

We have loads of QPR fans in my neck of the woods, they think Swindon are a joke side, so much so that two of them have taken huge bets off me giving me a three goal handicap start. If we beat them they will double the return.
QPR fans are the new Chelsea armchair I know it all 'we have loads of money' tits at the moment.

Thank you very much Swindon Town at one time I thought it was going to be twice as nice a taste.
I think I will book a holiday :yay:  :blowkiss: :plane:

Might help your stomach though - the manufacturers have just recalled a batch of new Beefy Bovril due to salmonella issues. Didn't get that with veggie Bovril!
