I think a bit of moisture on the pitch will help us based on the style we seem to be adopting.  May also make marking McNamee a bit difficult without 6 inch studs on.

They will most probably have football on young David.

Birmingham City vs Sheffield United.

Fact of the day: The Merlin used to have a blue nosed landlord. Think he's gone now. I preferred it when it was called The Malt and Hops.

deviating a bit i know but need advise fairly quickly (pretty please!), taking nippers for first time (well 5 year old went when babe in arms) so could do with parking fairly close but seem to remember hearing somewhere that they started clamping at transfer bridges last season. I'd be really grateful for advise, leaving in half hour.

oh and 3-2 town, Cox all 3

I'm going to the merlin dressed as a pirate. A hoody pirate. Without a hat because I couldn't find one. So basically an eye patch. Which makes it sort of a homage to Flight of the Conchords. Although it's accidental.

I should wear the eye patch to more pub trips. Is it still 0-0?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  Ace we won!  Simon Cox was superb today as was Paynter.

Title: Re: Official swindon v Tranmere matchday thread
Post by: STFC_Chris on Saturday, August 9, 2008, 16:20:48
We looked decent, Nalis and Timlin were superb. Paynter's goal came from some early pressure and good build up play, Cox's from a ball over the top that the keeper maybe ought to have come off his line for but was rooted to the spot and didn't stand a chance.

I think that puts us third in the table, not that it really means anything at this stage.

Title: Re: Official swindon v Tranmere matchday thread
Post by: Lash_sumthin on Saturday, August 9, 2008, 16:22:45
very good performance, paynter had a good game. Teams won't get much for free if we pressurise the ball like we did today. Their keeper was a bit dodgy wasn't he

Just got home.

I thought we played very well and looked very comfortable. Very impressed with Nalis and Timlin, both played brilliant...Timlin got stuck in with every challenge and Nalis just plays the right ball every time.

Jack Smith looked good as well except for a very stray passes now and then, and both strikers also got stuck in.

First time I have seen Casal, and wasnt entirely convinced...but thats what i thought of Commingues as well so I except him to settle down.

Their keeper was awful - still cant understand why he didnt come out for cox's goal!

Title: Re: Official swindon v Tranmere matchday thread
Post by: Arriba on Saturday, August 9, 2008, 16:45:54
a very comfortable win.
mcgovern my mom.he used the ball well and some lovely passes down the flanks.
paynter was impressive upfront and coxy too.i like nalis from that performance.he just patrols the middle of the park and keeps it simple.timlin did ok, and despite some ropey passes broke up play on numerous occasions.macnamee was in and out of it but their right back will be glad to be on the bus home now for sure.
good handling from brez and smith did nothing wrong at right back.
aljofree was his usual self and had a great and calm clearance off the line.
decent crowd, nice to see the don on the pitch, nice speeches from fitton, better pa system.

now the minus points.ifil is terrible with a football at his feet(nothing new though).the new left back looked dodgy to say the least.(2 poorly directed defensive headers for starters, plus poor touch and wayward passes. but wont judge yet)the obese steward has brought her sister along this season(why?)
the robinettes proved my point from weeks ago.and that helium breathing mong who shouts "come on swindon" and "come on you reds" in the arkells was a couple or rows in front of me.

Ifil seemed a bit scatty at times and Casal looked like he was just finding his feet.  To be fair hes hardly had any time with the squad and to come in and play 90 mins against a pretty physical side I think he did ok and will improve for sure.

At last, Paynter had a good game! Well done Billy.

Nalis was my MOTM, but it was close between a few contenders.

Early days yet. There were encouraging moments without it being sustained periods. But we were comfortable.

I hope for the Trannies sake that isn't their #1 keeper.

Easy win, sat back too much once the game was won.

Thought we were comfortable and honestly thought we didnt even really get out of 3rd gear. Reckon if the game was tighter we still could have raised it a couple of notches.

Oh and if Watford have a left winger better than McNamee then Im Andy fucking King...

That McNamee(sp?) got more crosses in than Chris Shuker does all season, Antwi was awful. By the way did Bas Savage do the moonwalk? Anyway, congrats on your win.

PS Can we have McNamee on loan? ;)

No :) But good luck until our next bout on the Wirral.

It's good that today, only two players in our squad did not represent Swindon last season - I remain convinced that this is a good thing - yes, we need a little bit more depth but it's good that we haven't been dismantled as we are most seasons.

Squad stability is the way forward.

To be fair they missed a couple of early chances to equalise...one of the line, shows what depth in squad will mean this season,Tranny missing Greenacre,Edds, two of there best players, but we did play very well and well deserved the 3 points.

It's a perfectly fair point.

Sometimes though you just have to say, "We won 3-1, Hoorah, Woohoo!" And so on and so forth and forget everything else.

Fuck this drawing shit!!

We'll win. 3.1.

Ahem.....

We looked good. Not a completely convincing display, but as I said to my lad on the way out, if Tranmere had been better we'd have had to step up a gear (Which we easily could of) and we'd have probably not conceded. A bit of complacency crept in and it cost us a goal.

I hope MM starts getting some credit now, he's got them playing some really nice stuff.

Been back for a little bit and brought myself to look at your message board.

1st thing Why all the round abouts???

2nd thing you were a good team and created some smart chances with good passing.

3rd We were god awful and our veteran goal keepr achterberg really showed his age and antwi showed his lass of class.  When we get our first choice goal keeper back and our top goal scorer greenacre we might stand a better chance.

Finally, you have to be the most miserable fans in the football league. 3-0 up and we didn't hear a peep off you, noda about one idiot in a cap shouting something anti scouse, I would hate to see what you lot are like when your losing.

First game nerves, we are usually capable of a fuck up and letting teams back in so I think even at 3-0 up we all had our nails firmly in our mouths. I certain did not helped by the fact we sat back and dropped back into 1st gear.

However, lets be honest....you're not in much position to talk about fan support and noise levels.

I just don't get the mentality of coming online to basically say "yes, yes we lost but here's what's wrong with you"

A couple of days ago we were being told that Tranmere were the dogs bollocks.

We have an oap - he didn't show his age. Godwin Antwi is a fucking Liverpool player - they must see something in him!

Your gripe is with your football club - not with our roundabouts and our failure to generate some noise.

and not one person on this forum has been saying "we are going up"...  ::)

Until Prenton  :bye:

The good:
Brez's handling on a second half shot. Didn;t have much to do but saved well when had to

Ifil:class

Timlin & Nalis, both played well, solid pairing

JPM: Took foot off gas at 3-0, but was superb

McNamee: not his best performance but still raped their right back. Some lovely touches and crossing got better as game went on

Cox: MOM. I've put a tenner on him to be top scorer E/W. He's quite good!

Paynter: was gutte not to see corr start, but paynter ran his socks off and had a blinder.

Fitton: nice speach, s/t offer a nice touch, and hopefully someone will find those two balloons with season tickets in them!

Performance: the team couldnlt have done any more to persuade any doubters about buying a S/T.

Pitch: looked amazing

Bad:
Full backs: Smith made some good tackles but IMO gave their winger a bit too much space. As my dad said, if he comes up against a McNamee he'll get skinned. Casel did ok for first game, looked a bit lost at times but showed potential

Aljofree: did ok, but STOP HOOFING IT!

Weather: WTF?

Atmosphere: bit flat considering we played so well?

My seat: absolute twat sat behind me four rows back, couldn;t have been any more negative. Christ knows what he would have done if we'd been losing. Have to put up with him for another 22 games!!!!

Byrne: quite lairy? Alays shouting at players like kingy, how about a bit of encouragement?

Rockin Robin: where was he?

Robinettes: good effort, but a bit more practie required!

69: who was the old bloke warming up with the team? didn;t he buy the opportunity to be on the bench last year? Just looks embarassing IMO.

Club shop: missed a trick not opening up today

What was their 'keeper doing for our second goal?! The through ball had his name written all over it, but he just retreated back to his line instead of dealing with it.

I though Nalis was very good. Rarely gave the ball away, and excellent at moving the ball down the pitch. When teams start to double up on Macnamee then hopefully Lilian will be able to exploit the gaps.

I still have a feeling that we're not quite there. While I think all round we did good defensive work, there were times that Tranmere passed it through us too easily and we were caught out. Luckily we were saved either by good defending from Ifil, or terrible finishing on Tranmere's behalf. McGovern left Jack Smith exposed far too often and it was down that side that Tranmere had most of what was very little joy going forward. Casal was exposed once or twice but overall he did well, need to give him time to settle.

Going forward, until the game was won at 3-0, I thought we were fantastic. Certainly the best attacking football since the playoff season five years ago! I think we'll tear teams to bits at the County Ground, and now Malpas' style is setting in I'm sure we're in for a lot of goals too. Tranmere were not a bad side, they passed it around neatly but they really lacked that killer touch. Whether that was our good defending or them I'm not quite sure, but once we took the foot off the gas, they had a little spell where they attacked more.

We really need to continue on this performance, and get a win at Cheltenham next week. If we are serious about challenging for the playoff we need to be beating teams like them, and we also need to make up for last seasons terrible away form. Pleased though, Nalis, Timlin, McNamee, Cox and Paynter were all superb and it's a great start to what will hopefully be a successful season.

Team very very nice. Paynter gave us everything you could have asked for. Great win, just need to show we are the real deal now by winning a few games away.

On the subject of Rocking Robin, love him or hate him, I understand from my pal who works at the club that hes on holiday at the moment but will be back for the next game.

Its great to see alot of positives come out of the yesterdays game, looks like the club have done alot of work on and off the field so thats something to build on.

As for the PA system, I was down at the club mid week and the old PA is being replaced with new (they had these cranes and stuff in the arkells stand installing new speakers), but the stadium bloke was saying that due to the weather they hadnt got round to replacing ones on the town end and DR stand. So I guess in time the rest will be done - damn good call if they are to do interviews with footballing legends, and stuff.!

Good idea to hook up with BBC as well on the pitch.

shame they still ran out of hot pies.-who ate all of them?!
and club shop shut? are they still refurbishing it?

Spencer with the  emphasis on ST's it was always likely that the quieter fan would be attracted...also some loss of TEnders would occur. I thought the TE would be worse than it was...I very nearly went for an early season walk, when an idiot steward was trying to get some random fella to sit down....steward was pointing out, he was going to make everybody sit down.  So I explained I wouldn't be....at which point Paynter scored and I missed the goal.....I then pointed out he'd ruined my afternoon and he fucked off  :)

Negatives:

Thought Tranmere made some good runs and had our defence stumped at times - quite often you'd see one of our defenders marking out two men and another two of ours marking nobody. Smith got caught out far too much, maybe because McGovern drifted in far too much. My latter point also concludes this.

Still, big Bas Savage was so shit it didn't matter.

Midfield looked overran at times, but as the game went on we started to look a lot more comfortable.

Positives:

Front two were brilliant. Don't need to say much more here, except Paynter was miles better than Peaks when came on.

Midfield finally settled down and played the football we're capable of. Thought Nalis played some good passes. McGovern looked really good when he finally decided to play on the wing. Needs to be more disciplined in doing that more often and he could surprise me and have an excellent season, as he played really well in the second half.

Overall we'll do ok this season based on that performance. We will definitely have to step it up to be in with a shout of play-offs, but as others pointed out, there wasn't a need to do that in this game.

Only a Swindon fan could write 82 words under negative and 79 under positive after a 3-1 win.

I don't think that the 40 after "Overall" go either way. Sort of like neutral words.

Why on earth would you want Corr in over Paynter?

I would suggest it's because, when fit, Corr is clearly a better footballer than Paynter.

Wait a sec, are you  :fishing: ? If so, then my hangover is to blame and congratulations.

im so pissed of with this 'if corr was fit' bollocks, if he was fit he wouldnt have ended up at swindon, he would still be at leeds/sheff wed. same with Kanyuka good enough for the championship but cos he always injured he ends up in league 1

Clearly? When has Corr proved to be a better football than Paynter?

Barry Corr has probably not even played 10 games in a row for us. He hasnt played enough to prove much to us.

Plus, Corr isnt fit. He has been injured pretty much ever since we signed him. He played two(?) 30 minute spells of pre-season football so it clearly no where near match fit, where as Paynter is.

So I dont understand why you'd be gutted to see a fit, expirenced, better player start instead of an un-fit, injury prone players who hasnt played a full game in months?!

Then of course there is the fact Paynter and Cox were our best partnership last season and have played most of pre-season together.

At no point did i say anything like that, I was merely pointing out that a fit Barry Corr is a better footballer than a fit Billy Paynter. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind, including Billy Paynter, not agreeing with that.

In the instance, such as yesterday when Paynter is fit, and Corr is not, then i would rather Paynter start.

I can't be bothered to look this up, but who has the better goals per game?

Title: Re: Official swindon v Tranmere matchday thread
Post by: dell boy on Sunday, August 10, 2008, 16:14:39
Has Paynter ever played 10 games in a row for us?

I'm not a great Paynter fan, but yesterday he tried his socks off, he always does, he scored a great goal, but he is not a natural goalscorer, never has been, Corr on the other hand is.

At the end of the day a fit Corr instead of Paynter (definitely), but will he ever he fit to play 10 in a row, doubt it.

So going round in circles I suppose, whats the best option for Swindon at the present time, then it has to be Paynter, does that make sense.

The Corr if fit thing has been touted for ages. Billy looked 100 times better than he did last season. Committed, confident, jumped for the ball and got stuck in. Paynter was shit hot yesterday and was my MOTM,.

Dell u say Corr is a natural goalscorer???
is this the same Barry Corr who never scored for Leeds, played nearly 20 games for sheff wed and never scored, and never scored in a league game on loan at bristol city.
Before signing for us Barry Corr had scored 1 goal in a cup game for Bristol City, not a natural goalscorer!!

How many did he score for Swindon in limited appearances.
And what is Paynters goals per games ratio, not as good as Corrs I think you will find.

I said it on many occasions, Paynter does everything right, but doesn't find the net enough, good old fashioned centre forward from lower divisions.
Corr no side has probably ever seen the best of the lad, and probably never will because of his back injuries.

I think his contract is up at the end of the season, if his injuries keep occurring are we going to sign him to play 10 games and score 4 goals when we can get a certain Sam Parkin from Luton when they get relegated to the conference?

That also doesnt take into account sub appearences or what division those appearences were made in. Just gone purely for games played and goals scored. Not even im that sad to break it down any further.

What I will say though is I think Billy Paynter is the better player and has the better track record. He has a (slightly) better goals to game ratio than Corr (although the same if rounded up/down) but Paynter has made over 4 times the amount of appearences as Barry Corr and has kept his 1 in 5 average going over a longer period of time.

Paynter turned 24 in July and Corr turned 23 in April so its not like Paynter is alot older than Corr has just played more.

Corr could be the better of the two, however because he hasnt played many games he could have just had a purple patch. I dont think hes played enough games to prove it either way.

It all comes down to opinion.
Corr for me will score goals a plenty if fit, which is very unlikely.
Paynter is a workhorse will never be prolific, but there again Mark Hughes wasn't either for Man U.

It is just a personal preference, for me, a fit Corr before Paynter any day.

We all see things differently.

Its not just a hunch that Corr will come good this season. Hes a lot bigger, hes worked really hard in pre season.

In my opinion he is a top footballer. Not just a goal scorer. Just think his luck will change this year.

I dont know what your views on Roberts' long term absenses have been? But im not even excited about Roberts comming back. Hes one of the most unfocused players Ive ever seen and its time for him to go. Barry Corr is a top notch footballer and is well worth the wait. Hes not done anything to contribute to his own downfall, hes just been unlucky. The shoulder injury was a freak one.

Paynter was brilliant yesterday, and no ones saying Corr should waltz back in and take his place. But Paynter isnt the most consistent player around. Im sure there will come a time where we need a shake up.

Paynter played as well as Cox did, just obviously couldn't play the whole game.

As for Corr, I look forward to him coming back properly match fit, I think he does have more talent than Paynter but I'd prefer Malpas to play people of the merits of their form and at the moment there would be little point in dropping Paynter on that basis.

Oh and I agree with SW about Roberts.

Bollocks. Anyone can play well for one game, i think Eric Sabin managed it once or twice too. I based my point on all the other games he's played for us, not just the one.

I don't think anyone on here is saying Corr should have played instead of Paynter yesterday - so your knobhead comment seems pointlessly aggressive - been on the afternoon Stellas Si?

And no, Paynter should continue to start if he continues to play like he did yesterday. When he returns to the Paynter of last season, it's time for him to move over. And at that point I hope Corr stays fit enough to not give him another opportunity.

The whole debate started because od Juddies post where he said something along the lines of 'Im gutted Corr didnt start' so clearly someone thought he should have started ahead of Paynter.

Also, who is to say the Billy Paynter of last season is the 'real' Billy Paynter and the one yesterday isnt? Paynter played in fits and spells last season. He had good games he had bad games and still came out of the season with a 1 in 4 scoring records. Which as pointed out was identical to Barry Corr.

Roughly...

Paynter 2341 minutes (26.01 games) 10 goals. A goal every 234.1 minutes

Corr 733 minutes (8.1 games) 5 goals. A goal every 146.6 minutes

Although I think if you break it down this much it becomes pointless because it doesnt factor in other teams fitness levels, whether or not we are pushing for a winner/holding onto a lead whether we are home or away and whether we were playing with confidence or not....or how many chances we created!

Looks like we've opened a can of worms!

All I said, is that because I prefer Corr as a player, I was gutted he didn't start. This is my own personal opinion, certainly not based on fact (!), but I've often thought Paynter can drift out of games.

In saying that, when Paynter does play well, like he did yesterday, then he's a key figure. He wins headers, he holds the ball up and brings others into play (in a style not too dissimilar to SSP) and his energy lifts others, and the crowd.

But if he plays like that every week I'll happily see him line up alongside Cox! The key thing is that while we all have our opinions on who should be the front two, the fact we have two very good players vying for one spot is a better position we've been in for years.

Likewise, at the beginning of last season we had either peacock and Pook/ easton and pook/ pook and peacock in the centre of midfield. The fact that none of the above started yesterday proves beyond doubt that all those saying our squad is no stronger than last season is talking nonsense.

Ditto Kanyuka in the centre of defence...

Whether your prefer Corr or Paynter, the facts are these: 1. Paynter was awesome Saturday, 2. When/if Paynter hits a rough patch we have an excellent striker waiting in the wings in Barry Corr.

And that for me makes me feel very optimistic about the season ahead.

And I'm still not happy with the prospect of sitting in front of the most miserable b*stard for the next nine months. Even at 3-0: "if we're not careful we're going to f^ck this up". I thought we were already own listening to him! Honestly, cheer up son.

Only thing about the don rogers stand is that you can't afford to drink too late before kick off. I've always fnished my pint at about 2.57 then headed into my seat in the arkells, but you need about 10/15 mins to get over to the Don Rogers, through the queue and into your seat.

Well happy with my new seat though, reminds me of the 95/96 season. Row H in the DR, the front row of the 'second tier'.

Though we played pretty well. Going forward teh midfield and attack were vey good at times, we passed teh ball well.

Defensively I think we made a few errors at times, and Tranmere's 4-3-3 did cause some confusion.

That said i think Malpas won the tactical battle. People conplaining in the other thread about JP tucking in at times, I think he was told to, so that we went 3 v 3 in central midfield. macca hugged the touchline virtually all game, and got so many 1 on 1's with their right back. He didnt even have one of his better games, but beat his man and put a cross in every time.

Generally think that was a good win, Tranmere didnt look like a team that would struggle to me.
