At least it means we won't get Wycombe in the first round..... we'll just get Brentford instead.

In a competition that involves only two divisions - the fact that twelve teams receive byes really does tell you what a tinpot trophy this is. Not that I wouldn't say no to a trip to Wembley but you know what I mean.

The draw numbers... I predict Shrewsbury away.

1. AFC Bournemouth
2. Aldershot Town
3. Brentford
4. Bristol Rovers
5. Exeter City
6. Shrewsbury Town
7. Swindon Town
8. Yeovil Town

We've played Brentford twice in row - could it be a hat-trick? The first time we played them we were new to League Two and they were still nursing a Play-Off defeat - I remember Brentford took a 2 goal lead and we rallied back. But alas Holgate missed a penalty in the shoot-out.

Completely different a year later - we were back in L1 and Brentford had started L2 with Ricky Shakes et al.

We made the area Semi-Finals in 2004/2005 - then a dreadful performance at Southend killed that run... I don't think we've gone beyond the 2nd round.

I'd like Exeter - but it would be typical now I don't live in Devon. They'd probably beat us and my ex-housemate wouldn't let me forget it, regardless of how irrelevant it is. He put his head in his hands in heartbreak when Pook scored at St. James Park in a friendly!

I think I can remember playing Aldershot late eighties , we got beat on penalties I think in whatever the competition was called then. That was certainly a bit lively outside the ground that night, would be good to play them again after somany years

Was there Lambourne...was the match we were 2 up then Frazer Digby got sent off.

Post by: lambourn red on Friday, August 8, 2008, 15:30:26
Yes Digby got sent off actually I think they beat us 3-2 after extra time we were 2 - 0 up and Digby was harshly sent off and the Town end went mad. There was a lot of aggro outside I can definately remember that,in fact it might have been the southern area final or something like that.

Lovely little ground, have seen us win there twice and draw there, gave us a great reception when we won the Championship of the old 4th Division when we won 4-2 there.

Some fave memories was our 7-0 drubbing of them in 83 and a 6-3 against them in 76.

Real old school ground with 2 and a half stands and a trawler net behind one of the goals to stop the ball going onto the main road!

If I recall correctly the 7-0 game was in the FA Cup....may have been 1-0 at half time. Andy Rowland and Howard Pritchard both scored hat tricks....don't think I've ever seen that before or since.

I've seen us play at the Rec quite a few times.The last 2 occasions were pre season games;

July 99 under Quinn and back in August 91 Hoddle's first pre-season.The 91 game sticks in my mind,

because we were due to play Leicester in the opening game, the following weekend and i remember

seeing John Gregory,Brian Little's assistant at that time,on a scouting mission.Secondly,it was

a lovely hot day and England were playing the Windies at the Oval in Viv Richards farewell test.

Aldershot went bust about 6 months later.

I will have to be honest Alan, I know absolutely bugger all about Aldershot apart from them and Reading being old rivals. Are they traditionally considered a football league side?

If so I suppose it is excellent that, despite it taking a while, they have now got their league place back after going bust.

Title: Re: BIG NEWS!!!!!

I have done some research now. If we accept that Aldershot FC and Aldershot Town FC are the same entity, then they enjoyed football league membership from 1932 through to 1992.

Their current rivals are Woking. But only because they haven't played Reading for a while.

It's my understanding that the new Aldershot Town wanted to be considered a new side and so ditched Aldershot FC's record.

Which is of course the way it should be....just like Bristol City 1982, should be considered a different club to the previous Bristol City.

i've been to aldershot.watched them play maidstone in a fa cup match not long before both clubs went out of business.we had an away game at ipswich called off due to snow that day, which is why we ended up in aldershot for the crack.
had a couple of turnstiles at one end of the ground and then you could walk all around the place and watch from wherever you wanted.

Worth noting here that the old Aldershot considered Bournemouth and Brentford as rivals, as well as Reading. Apparently.

They haven't really...the Bormuff fan must live in a bit of a fantasy world with his reference to them having a firm of 250.

Nevertheless Aldershot can seem a bit pikey with its image as the home of the British Army, but is in reality part of a small conurbation along with Farnham, Camberley and Farnborough, where all rates for positive social indexes are amongst the highest in England, and negatives at the lowest end of the scale.

Doesn't, of course, mean there isn't a chavvy element...even Cheltenham has a few.

I'm not sure just how many Town fans will make the effort to go to this game. The covered terracing
behind the goal is divided between Home and Away fans and you can can also stand part of the way
along the railway side, either side of a small stand.I think depending upon numbers, that stand has seating
which would be allocated to away fans.

On the other side, where the players tunnel is,there is a covered stand, which has seating at the front
and a standing area behind.Tbh,the thought of opposition fans behind you, isn't very appealing,so you
might want to take this into consideration.

As you approach the ground, from the open end (High St) the railway side is on your right and the
players tunnel side,is on your left.

I think you will find Aldershot have a very large hooligan element.
It has a lot to do with their army connections, it's a pretty rough town anyway so loads of local yobs.

I saw Aldershot play in the 1st Round or it might have been the last preliminary round of the FA Cup a few years ago at Wokingham, fuck me did that kick off. They brought 1,500ish fans and stupidly 100 or so Reading hard nuts thought they would turn up for the match, they didn't stay very long, those who could climb over the fences certainly did, after the game their were running battles in Wokingham for about 1 hour, loads of pubs trashed, it was a mess.

On the positive side, if their can be one, Aldershot fans create a load of noise, they really get behind their side, especially at home.

Dell and Reg are both right.  The Camberley/Farnborough/Aldershot/Farnham connurbation (or the Blackwater Valley towns, as they are sometimes labelled) is very affluent/middle England over all.  But within that area, there are pockets of deprivation within Aldershot and parts of Farnborough.  I'm too young to remember encounters with Aldershot, but from what I understand from reading the local press etc., they do have a lively support.

I've been there a good few times and every time its kicked off - mainly due to Swindon it must be said. I wonder if they've blocked off the back exit via the cemetary where it really used to kick off. I should imagine given the history that their Neanderthals would be well up for this one.

I used to go out in Aldershot a lot when I was in the the army, stationed at Borden.

Typical garrison town, pissed up squaddies fighting with pissed up locals (Or each other) most nights of the week somewhere.

Same as Tidworth was when I was there....

I don't know too much on this, but having lived in Pompey, and knowing a bit on Plymuff, the military police tend to deal with the pissed up sailors and marines....and they don't mess around.

 Isn't the same for squaddies.

Erm, yeah the way I put it, it did sound like that didn't it? I think the point I was making was that it was noticeably worse than A N Ordinary Town in Aldershot. And yes Reg the MPs were generally pretty visible but it seemed to be mainly "locals" rather than squaddies that were involved. At least that's what we always assumed, we didn't usually ask to check warrant cards, just stepped round the mess

The 3 times I have been there the club itself has a very friendly atmosphere, the officials of Aldershot are very good (were very good) and friendly, but as stated above every time I have been there - there has been a largish hooligan element in the home support, but again it has to be stated that Swindon too were up for a rumble those days so it did indeed kick off.

The "so called" A-Company are well known in hooligan circles, consisting almost entirely of chavs.

Virtually every team/town in the country has a hooligan element still though and only takes a word or two that we are taking a few of the "ahem" lads down then there will be trouble.

On an aside note.....Aldershot Town has the smallest population of an Football League team (despite the surrounding areas being a good catchment area for fans/hooligans)
