Title: So, who is the winger then?
Post by: SwindonTartanArmy on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, 07:55:43
Quote
The Town boss is looking to make it a triple swoop by the end of the week as he closes in on a Championship winger who can play on either flank and in attack.

The player spent last season on loan at a couple of clubs in League One and is thought to be available on a free transfer.

Any ideas?

I think it must be Betsy.
I cannot see Myrie Williams being on a free.

I think its Jennison Myrie-Williams who can play as a winger or up front, is local and is another 6 footer as MM likes.

The only thing against him is that hes left footed and not a right winger, unless MM intends to swap him to the right as a left footed right winger....pretty unusual IMO.

But then again...Betsy is 6'1" as well and much more of a right sided player.......

mmmm jury is out, but I think its one of them!

It is almost definately going to be Dauda. He is on his way over to Swindon from Sweden as we speak! I am so excited!

Didn't we have Betsy on loan on that loan deadline day when we signed about 5 players?

I seem to remember him having a terrible attitude.

That was Kevin James.

He was fucking useless and that was against cirencester, reckoned he was some gangster cunt.

I see a pattern emerging, him and Jarrett. innit gwan.

Was going to say, i think we'd all know if Betsy had played for us recently. Has looked really good in this division over the last few seasons so would be a decent addition IMO. No idea about the other bloke but the more the merrier!

Apart from that time at the CG during a league cup game when Wycombe passed us off the park and he was one of the best players on the pitch.

From what I remember of seeing Betsy he doesn't seem to be much of a winger, more of a wide forward in that he always seems to be happy to come inside the full back, but he can't really go outside anyone or get crosses in. He seemed a bit of a 'push and rush' merchant too.

He lloked alright playing in a front 3 with mooney and holmes for wallsall when they battered us at the CG also.

I thought he played very well against us away to Wycombe in league 2 and destroyed us last season at home to Walsall. Would be a very decent signing.

I'm praying it's Betsy and not JMW. Betsy is proven at this level and looked lively against us last year, whereas Williams is a diving useless piece of crap*.

*completely unjustified disliking of player alert

Betsy is one of those players who always does well against us.

Myrie-Williams is "one for the future" so even a laughing-stock like Bristol City are unlikely to let him go on a free.

40 career goals in about 240 matches...was in the lge 2 PFA team when at Wycombe....i would really like Betsy here.

I remember Betsy being one of those players that always seemd to "threaten".  Maybe never really did produce but he panics defenders or keeps them busy, which would be a great addition to take some attention away from McNamee.  I'd quite like those two on the wings in fact, with Nalis, Easton and Timlin battling it out for the central two places.  Quite a decent midfield for this league I think.

im sure it is likely to be betsy, if it is we will be good going forward but fullbacks will be very exposed.

I remmember Betsy playing for Barnsley on Sam Parkins debut. South stand were taking the piss shouting betsy in a high pitched note (even higher than usual). He looked OK that day. Wycombe were a class act that League Cup game and he was one of their best players.

Just a worry that he's had so many clubs. Lots of clubs spending money then letting him go after a year or two.

He would be much better than JPM though.

(just posted this on the rumours thread as I didn't notice this one )

I'm guessing Joe Anyinsah of Preston - plays on both wings and played for Carlisle and Crewe last season.

He's played only a few games for Preston since 2005 and I'd doubt he'd command a fee... I'm sure Betsy would.

Betsy's the only one I can think of that is at a Championship club who was on loan at two League One clubs last season (Yeovil & Walsall). The adver article also suggests he could be available on a free which would suggest he's still under contract but they're looking to off-load.

Anyinsah's a good shout. He's previously a Shitty youth, so perhaps would like to come home?

From the BBC  "The player is understood to have been on loan to two League One clubs last season, and can play on either wing or up front."  Does Betsy play all three? Sounds more like one of the other two mentioned

I'm sure Betsy used to play up front for Wycombe.

I thought MM was talking about a permanent deal for a player, not a loan move.

Doesn't mean its not Myrie-Williams but not quite sure all the facts (if any) are right in that article.

One is right. No two. They said we have signed Nalis and also that JMW plays on either flank and upfront. Still could be either him of Betsy really.

Joe Anyinsah has been the best player so far in pre season games for PNE and Carlisle are after his permanent signature so I could be wrong but I dont think its him IMO.

I'd put money on it being Betsy. Makes no sense for City to get rid of Myrie-Williams, nor Preston of Anyinsah, and certainly neither of them for free.

Didn't MM also state that the player in question is of young age? That makes me think it's Myrie-Williams... or someone else.

You're right - he was talking about Yinka.

I'm still not sure about Betsy - without a reason to justify this.

The not saying it was a young player is one of the things that points towards betsy for me. And the fact that he said it was for a free. Betsy seems to be out of favour so it seems less unlikely that they'd let him go, unlike the younger players which seem to be going out on loan for experience.

It sounds like it might not happen anyway though. So maybe we'll never find out.

Title: Re: So, who is the winger then?

Other than being an early member of the Fulham gravy-train - Betsy hasn't played for clubs that I would associate with high earners. 2 years at Barnsley, 1 at Oldham, 2 at Wycombe and 1 with Bristol City... It would be at the latter where the money really starts rolling in - he was brought in to ensure promotion and didn't get a look in after that.

One day MM is saying that the guy really wants to join and the next day it doesn't look likely because of money - says alot about modern football really. They'll join (and want to join) Basra Academical if the money is right.

City paid £200k for him a couple of years ago.  Given their status as the biggest club in the world (tm) it seems fair to assume that he is on more than most if not all of our players.   especially if city do the 25% autmatic increase / decrease for promotion / relegation thing.

Betsy was at the game last night, apparently disucssing a few things, but he is sti  lin talks with the Slave Traders about paying yup his contract so he can join Swindon.

And Malpas wants an answer from Casal's club today or he will move to his next target
