The season hasn't even begun yet and already I can't be bothered. Sigh.

It is a bit difficult to get motivated at the moment...we know more or less what we'll get.
Wee Macca causes mayhem, and without Cox little chance of scoring. Defence will look OK, until some lapse of concentration will allow some big fucker like Roger Johnson to head in a set play.  None of the midfielders will get in the box and a fair number of corners will be wasted due to poor delivery.

Despite it only being a friendly, the thought will occur, that this season might be a bit of a struggle, unless Barry Corr can get fit....Barry Corr wont get fit.

Reg, you say every season is going to be a struggle.

We finished 13th. Team is more or less the same, except we have cox, Timlin & macca all season. I'm not saying we're dead certs for promotion or anything, but come on!

Hoping both trialists catch the eye, and also hope Joyce gets a decent crack.

Reg provides the balance. We all know that injuries to key players could result in dire consequences.

I've looked through the L1 teams and we're not the worst by far - what saddens me is that I get the impression that some, not all, teams seem happy to allow Leeds and Leicester battle it out and are happy for the rest will scrap it out.

I'm probably wrong.

I also really hope both Nalis and Kasal work out for us.

Joyce looked very encouraging at Chippenham on Saturday so hopefully he will show it again against far stronger opposition tonight.  I'm looking forward to it, reckon we will give Cardiff a good run for there money, we are a better side than last season so I am optimistic for the season.

That's because it usually is, even a couple back when we started under Wise and Poyet, on the back of BP money and there were reasons for optimism, it didn't take too long to go pear shaped.

OK we managed 3rd place, but I'd still say that season was a struggle.

Front two doesn't say "goal fest" does it!

Strangely that is one line up i've wanted to see for a while, because as far as i'm aware Paynter's best position is off a target man.

I suppose it's inevitable, but teams who play the bloke must think he's the bigman, so therefore he becomes the lamp post the rest of the team have to hoof it at. Well, we should all know that size doesn't make you a targetman, check out Fola: the only bloke who was taller before his feet left the ground, mind you Crouch has that, "when i jump, i'm gonna just move my knees quickly toward my chest, then stick my legs out again before i land i my arse" jumping technique.

Oh, and i'm going, and were it not so late would be sorting out a Season Ticket, as well.

Due to media accreditation guidelines relating to football clubs, TV and photographers rights we are unable to continue to provide this external webcam service on the BBC Wiltshire website. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.

Casal didn't go off at half time, Kanyuka did. He switched Casal to CB.

On to the game, Nalis is, as said, ace and also brought the best out of Timlin. Macnamee flattered to deceive somewhat. I don't think, judged solely on tonight, that Casal is significantly better than Callum Kennedy, who i thought was very impressive in the second half. Peacock looked very sharp and should have added to his tally. I think he is in front of Paynter to partner Cox come the 9th.

Finally Jack Smith played remarkably well as well. Crowd was somewhat disappointing but it's shutdown this week. The Don Rogers Stand fast clapping drove me insane, and after all these friendlies I cannot wait to get back behind the net where we all belong.

Title: Re: cardiff...
Post by: RobertT on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 21:13:24
Good game, some slick passing at times, mostly in the 1st half.  Nalis should have been passed a contract on leaving the pitch on the sole basis that he is the first midfielder I've seen in years offer himself for a ball from the keeper.  Left back looked useful, a little issue slotting in at centre half but I doubt he's played many minutes let alone games in that position.  Morrison was a bit shaky to start with which allowed Cardiff into the game.  Liked the look of Nalis and Timlin together and Peacock played quite well upfront and should link well with Cox.  McNamee drifted for a while but started to enjoy taking the piss out of the right back towards the end.  All in all I was impressed and with a bit of pace on the right we'd look a pretty good outfit this year.

Title: Re: cardiff...
Post by: Panda Paws on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 21:14:57
We played some nice stuff at times. Even the two CB seem to be looking for Nalis instead of looking long all the time. All along the backline, when they won the ball, they would instantly look to Nalis, who would then move the ball on in as few touches a possible. He looked a real class act, although he did begin to fade into the second half.

Catering seemed identical but I'm not exactly a regular at the kiosks, apart from the odd bovril...which tonight was alot weaker and luke warm at best.

Nalis' fitness must be a bit behind everyone elses no?

He said something about spending time with his family when he left Plymouth instead of keeping in shape.

If we were Bristol City we'd probably send him on his way for that.

Ok here is a mini report:

Game was OK, some neat football at times and we looked slightly fitter/sharper, except the first 15 of the second half. Definitely tried to knock it around compared to cardiffs largely more direct game (hoofball).

Our goal came from some good link up play when new trialist crossed (not Nalis, T'other one), Nallis dummied and someone played in Peacock for a one on one 'yes he's scored (cheer) no the keepers got a hand on it, yes it's in' type goal .

I'm not trying to be hard on the young lad learning his trade but it was an(other) error for their goal from Morrison (OS says Jack Smith, but surely my eye sight isn't that bad). He let the ball run across him but there was a player sneaking round the back who nicked in and scored the 1 on 1. Also looked shaky a few minutes later when the attacker sold him a dummy to get to the bye line. After that he improved immensely and showed some confident touches.

Paynter still frustrates me. Had a couple of good touches but was largely rubbish again (waits for 100 contradictory posts!).

Peacock played 60 and looked sharper than Paynter. Marginally.

McGoven was back to his frustrating self. Captain cock up! To be fair, he sees the pass quicker than anyone else on the pitch. Tonight it didn't come off.

McNamee had a few class touches/crosses but was much, much better marked than Pompey managed.

Nallis looked reasonably solid and mobile. Seemed largely to get the ball and give it simply, mixed in with a few (literally only 2 or 3) dodgy passed and a few excellent sprayed passes. Put in some good challenges.

Other new bloke did OK. Solid and got up the pitch well. Caught out a couple of times but made up the ground.

Both trialists steady rather than spectacular and definitely worth another look.

Kanyuka/Beast/JSmith were solid.

Timlin worked hard and did well.

Another impressive preformance I thought. Nalis will definately add something extra to the team and should get a contract. Casal looked solid and worth another look. JPM and Jack Smith also had good games.
Looked like there was fun and games in the Arkells stand with a few stewards having to run up there to keep the Swindon and Cardiff fans apart. Relatively good atmosphere though for a friendly.

Can't rely on the youth, although it's nice to see a few on the edge now.  Kennedy looked good once he'd settled, but needed a strong person inside him at times I think to guid his positional sense.  He'll also find it tough at times when McNamee swithces off, but in time he looks to have something about him.  You;ve got the same with Joyce and Allen, so Macklin maybe a long term answer but we need something we can rely on to offer variety from McGovern.

Macklin hasn't really recovered his form from his injury, and looks distinctively average every time I've seen him. Hopefully Roberts will get himself fit, and stay fit for more then 2 or 3 months as he is more than capable of playing wide right for a top half league 1 team.

Impressed with that showing, if we had Cox up front we would have won. Morrison was pretty bad for the first few minutes of the second half but got better. Kennedy looked good, as did Casal and Nalis, who I think is definitely worth signing. I thought McGovern and Timlin did well too.

It's given me a bit of optimism for next season.

Post by: Uncle Albert on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 21:25:40
My first game this pre-season and I left fairly optomistic about next season. The difference in style from Sturrock is clear now and from memory this is probably the most slick passing football I've seen for a while. Nallis looks quality. Always came short, played nice one-twos and was always looking to spray the ball. Him and Timlin looked solid and inventive. Thought Casas looked decent, although Kennedy had a cracking game whilst he was on. The defence looked failry solid and quite like the look of Kanyuka and Ifil. It's clear that Malpas is trying to bring a passing game to the CG and pre-saeson seems to have installed a bit of confident into the players. Lets see how they get on with Tranmere though!!!

I have very little opinion on Malpas, other than that he needs the whole summer and next season unless it goes dramatically wrong. He seems very honest and genuine and has a great pedigree.

I wasn't aware that Macklin was injured and from what I've seen he's on fire but at only 16 I suppose we can't expect too much. Malpas seems a decent guy but doesn't seem to have much spark - maybe Dave Byrne is the man - he's seems to have something about him

Title: Re: cardiff...

Impressed for sure.  Nalis looked very good for someone apparently not up to full fitness yet and thought Jack Smith had a very very good game tonight with the odd showboat thrown in!  (Yes we are talking about the same Jack Smith!)

I thought their goal was Morrisons error too, seemed to have a very funny few seconds and looked a little shakey but perhaps he just needs an older head to help guide him a bit.

Slightly concerned re Paynter as didn't really think he looked that sharp and almost a bit lazy but not going to write him off yet.

Have to say though that I agree with some comments re Peacock starting alongside Cox.

Title: Re: cardiff...
Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, 22:21:55
Thought overall it was ok tonight. We played well but lacked the creativity up front. Many ideas tried, most never came off, that's the way it goes sometimes.

I thought Paynter and Peacock linked the play well, whenever Paynter held up the ball he was looking to bring in the midfield and if he went to flick the ball on he called it (I heard him shout for Peacock/Joyce to run on). I thought Peacock played well on the shoulder of defenders but didn't quite have the pace to exploit the clever interplay between the two strikers.

Midfield wise I thought the middle two were really good. Nallis looks composed and could be a decent addition. Timlin was confident to run on and do some nice passing and moving, he put in some excellent tackles and was really creating space for us. McGovern looks hungrier for the ball and puts in more tackles now. McNamee was not given the ball enough and when he did get it, just didn't look up to taking people on. He didn't do anything wrong, and in fact looked very dangerous when he tried his tricks/to run around people, but otherwise quite placid. Allen didn't really get into the game.

In defence it really was a very mixed bag. Thought Ifil and Kanyuka dominated the middle when they were on. There was one occassion Cardiff got round the back for a clean shot on goal but Phil Smith did very well and the striker hit it at him. Smith hung on to the ball at the first time of asking. Brez just doesn't look confident in comparison, or maybe I just don't feel as confident when he's between the sticks.

The trialist didn't have much to do, but closed down and got himself in the way. Didn't really bomb forward or pass as well as I hoped (quite Vincent-like). Morrison had a mental 10 minutes where he went missing but after that looked confident and assured and dealt with the ball well. Jack Smith looked good going forward but Comminges had the better of him in the second half and I thought he drifted into the middle far too much, leaving that flank exposed. Better crossing would have punished him. Kennedy played really well going forward and in defence. McNamee seemed to play better when he was on the pitch as well.

Both smiths had a good game and I was nervy when Brez came on.

JPM I thought played pretty well, especially in the first half.

Paynter held the ball up well as usual but didn't look threatening.

Timlin was star man for me, did a great job in the midfield.

Morrison will be good but was panicked at the start of the second half.

Some gobby Cardiff fans outside the County Ground hotel before kick off. Bouncer got rid of them just as it look like it would kick off. Cardiff fans then buggered off went around the front and smashed a window at the County which provided some much needed air con.

Apparently after the game there was "police intelligence" (do those words go together???) to suggest Cardiff were going to storm the County. Didn't happen, loads of O.B after the game outside, wouldn't let us in. Eventually we got in after I made the copper look a twat.

Really enjoyed last night, it was nice to see Town playing attractive, passing football again!!

I thought Casal had a good first half and looked very promising (Don't forget he's only trained with the team once!)
Nallis was majestic (Bar the odd misplaced pass) but Timlin for me was MOM, was very commanding in midfield. MM now has serious options at centre midfield.

Paynter linked well with Peacock, but couldn't score in a brothel! Peacs did ok.

I thought JP and Jack Smith had reasonably good games, as did both goalkeepers.

The really good news though is our youngsters. Kennedy didn't look out of place and while Allen didn't have much time on the pitch, he performed well. Morrison, apart from his wobbly start, looked composed and Joyce did ok too.

Ifil and Kanuyka looked solid at the back in the first half, Morrison and Casal slighty less so in the second half, although Casals ability to play in more than one position is a bonus.

If MM get get Marshall back and sign Nallis and Casal, I'd be reasonably happy.

I thought Casal showed glimpses of what he can do, and adapted well to centre half when asked, he could have a lot to offer us. Callum Kennedy also impressed me, at this rate we'll be spoilt for choice at left back. Nalis looked a little off the pace (understandable) but showed some lovely touches and vision. But I was most impressed with Timlin, he ran the show last night.

I worry a bit about players impressing in such a game, because Cardiff were shockingly poor ( I assume it was mainly a reserve side).....Nalis indeed looked a class act, but there was so much time, I think I could have sprayed a few passes around. Still he's definitely the sort of player we need ie a playmaker.

Yinka looked OK...you'd like to think MM can spot a left back.

Title: Re: cardiff...

Nalis looks like that Miglioranzi type player we have been missing. Didn't run out of steam despite not being fully fit, although I'm sure he wasn't even playing near top gear. Like Mex said, I can really see that central midfield partnership working, or Nalis & Easton would be good also.

I like the fact we mixed up our play a lot more than we did against Pompey.

i enjoyed it, even if cardiff didn't field a particularly strong side i thought we looked like a tight and useful unit, usual defensive frailties aside.

nalis looked great and i don't think there can be any doubts regarding his fitness levels...sign him up.

the english/nigerian/dutch/american left-back was great. combined well with macca in the first half and relishes the physical side of the game as well - just the sort of player to give vincent some competition. looked out of position at centre-back but adapted as the second half progressed.

kennedy impressed me...but as reg pointed out, so did lapham, stroud, herring et al.

In my opinion Nalis is slow. He has to make desperate lunges because he's off the pace. I dont think hes better than Craig Easton. So for me it would depend on what he wants for wages, but he'd be good to have in the squad. Timlin looks very very good. Jack Smith had an excellent game, I knew he was a good pro, you can only hope hes realised he has to step up his game if hes going to stay at STFC, fair play.

First mistakes Ive seen Morrison make, conceeded us one goal, and there was another mistake which should have been a goal. But he had the composure to recover. I dont know if he lacked concentration or what, but he was in contention to start against Tranmere but I dont think he will now. Ifil/Kanyuka looks our number one pairing to me.

Big problem for me. Jon Paul McGovern. Doesnt complete enough passes, too many bad balls. Not enough pace. Im glad Malpas is looking for another right winger, because this bloke just isnt up to it. He has his moments but we are going to have every defence double mark McNamee, so we need a much better threat down the right, EVERY WEEK not for 20 minutes a month. Worrying that he was made captain. I think its time to offload JPM if we can.

I really like both Peacock and Paynter. Great attitude, great workrate. But I cant really see them scoring a lot. 15 years ago the refs used to let a lot more go and a big strong partnership like that with lots of effort would have been brilliant. Id love to see those two come off, so fingers crossed they bag a couple v Plymouth.

Couldnt believe how many fans Cardiff brought. Attendance would have been awful if not for them! Last night must have made a wacking great big loss because their was a lot more police in the ground than for a normal league game. All a bit silly for a friendly in my opinion, but it made for a good atmosphere I spose. I saw Innes Abrahams. Cardiff team were shit.

I think Nalis had some touches of class, but I'd agree about his apparent lack of pace. Timlin and the Smiths had good games, Morrison will probably be fourth choice CB.He's good in the air but his turning circle is such that I think he's registered in Liberia. Got some fearful stick from the bench after his mistake which I don't think helped him in the short term. Mind you Kanyuka got caught out in th first half and was rescued by the keeper.

Bit worried why he tried Casal at CB in the second half, hope that neither Ifil or Kanyuka picked up a knock.

Casal looks to have a bit about him.Pacier than Vincent but not as good positionally. Also adds height

I'd say Peacock would start with Cox, but a yard of pace last night and he could have scored several. Paynter tried hard.

McNamee just ok, Mcgovern tried to force too many killer balls

Good to see we were in cost saving mode by not putting the lights on until the second half

Niallis is a definite must sign. Just the sort of player we have needed for years. Also pleased that an effort had been made to improve the speed of the actering in the DR stand. More outlets open, guys selling drinks from backpacks & someone over the age of 16 in charge.
I should also mention that some of the club staff were going around talking to people about the ST deal AND the ticket office stayed open to sell St's afterwards. Proof to me that the new board does listen

Yes obviously, but I wouldn't mind betting that the takings were almost as much as at the Pompey game ceratinly they would have taken a higher % per punter through the gate. The main point is that they did something about it rather than ignoring the problem.

As regards the catering, wasnt that more likely because there were about 2000 town fans there when they expected about 5000?
Didn't Phil just also mention somebody sensible in charge, and people selling from backpacks? I see your point Spence but give the board some credit, they've made a couple of sensible changes there

Backpack sellers were around for Pompey as well

Not sure why people would want to buy backbacks at a football match to be honest.

They've got an adult involved finally to have a 'detailed look' at the current arrangements, and one who knows what he's doing. Expect some positive changes in time for the Tranmere game.

Already I notice 'The CrossBar' in the DR stand have moved to Carling. I don't think that had anything to do with this new bloke though.

nail on the head there i think. Who wants to pay £3 for a shit burger? You're only in there 2 hours FFS!

I just remembered the guy at the doing a mental celebration towards the cardiff fans when we 'scored' the second. took him almost a full minute to realise it was offside.

Maybe you haven't eaten for a while and you're hungry, therefore you'd prefer to spend your three pound on a burger that doesn't taste like cardboard.  Be nice if there were some nice fried onions to go with said cardboard, I mean burger.

Talking to the adult in question, whose assistance was requested weeks before the portsmouth game and, i would guess, your complaint.

Don't count me along with people who complain about food queues, i only said i'd spoken to the bloke a while ago who was tasked with sorting it out.
half time is for beer. Eating is cheating.

Just watched the highlights.

It looks as though our goal may have come about through McNamee being doubled up in, leaving gaps.

That's the beauty of a player like that: Double up and you leave gaps, or don't double up and he rips you to shreds.

Ace.

Bit sad really isn't it.
