Yeah I cant say I am upset by the result if it stays around the same, we sound like we have created several good chances and a couple of players have played well by the sounds of it...Macca especially.

just got back. Any one hear what the attendance was? Macca was a different class. Trialist from eastleigh looked a good prospect too.

Malpas didn't name any names. Good.

Suspect it could be Maher.  Just name checked as well.

We played some decent football, first 30 minutes or so in particular. It always looked like Portsmouth could step up a gear or two if needed.

Amankwaah looked decent, Kanyuka was pretty tidy too bar a couple of dodgy clearances. McNamee was different class, their fullback (Cranie?) didn't stand a chance... clapped off by Portsmouth fans when he was subbed, I think they were probably pleased to see the back of him.

Ground looked good, pitch was excellent...although the real test will be in December/January. It might take some getting used to queueing 5 minutes to get in!

They still need to sort out the food kiosks in the Don Rogers Stand. Has the food improved?

The queue in the DR for food was very, very long. I didn't wait to find out.

Marshall looked like a headless chicken. Quick but devoid of quality. That said, he must have been nervous playing for a contract against prem opposition.

Paynter had a carthorse of a game.

JPM put some good work in, something you can't always say. He has quality too as we know.

Amankwaah looked solid but unspectacular. Not a criticism, early days yet.

Kanyuka did OK, I think Ifil edges it just now but he's got stiff competition.

Vincent was frustrating at times. As was Jack Smith when he came on.

Brez took the man when clean through, and would probably have got red in a real match. Likewise Cox was hauled back and (was it Campbell) for our pen.

Phil Smith did nothing wrong

I thought Allen did well too, up for it and didn't look out of place. Not quite ready for a first 11 chance yet, but promising.

Saving the best until last,

McNamee had a stormer. I swear he delayed some of his crosses to draw the defender so he could take the piss out of him again and again. He must have had 10 high quality crosses in the game creating at least 3 or 4 excellent goalscoring chances.  He did have one bad cross though, nobodies perfect!

In fact after the game I heard one pompey fan call him Awesome, and another guy asked us who he was - "Anthony McNamee and he's not for sale"

So all in all, If I was assessing the squad I'd say this, good base, but we need a goalscorer, a left back and a spare winger. We may get the goalscorer out of what we already have.

Good performance. I guess Pompey showed premiership quality finishing, and had a bit more of the ball, but we competed well and could have won the game if someone could get on the end of McNamees crosses.

Good crowd too, much more than I tought would be there!

based on that performance i see no reason why we can't be challenging for the top two. McNamee put in his best performance yet, everyone held their breath when ever the ball went to him

Macca was awesome tonight, lets just hope he can continue his form into the season. Cox looked sharp first half but tailed off in the second, Amankwaah looked solid, strong and quick but lacking any real quality on the ball. All in all it just reaffirmed what we already know, we need a left back and a right midfielder, and quickly!

The young trialist tried too hard. He looked quick and tricky, but it just seemed that he wasn't playing his usual. Instead of beating one and delivering or playing the easy ball, he wanted to do something outstanding, but in his defense, it was clear he had something about him and is just desperate to impress and secure a pro deal.

Ground looked tidy, pitch was lovely and it all seems a bit more of a professional set up around the ground, apart from the service in the Don Rogers...absolute shambles!

It's great to see Macca and Coxy doing so well, but my only concern is that if we take these two out of the team (i.e. they get injured), i can't really see where the goals are goin to come from!? Like i know it's only pre-season un'all, but so far it would seem these two are the only ones grabbing the headlines....It would be nice to see Paynter, JPM etc getting more involved with the goals....I don't mean to sound all negative, but we need goals from players other than Cox, and have players grabbing the headlines other than Macca.

Like i've said, i realise it's only pre-season, and we've only played 4 games, but it paints a picture as to what to expect in the forthcoming season.

For a friendly it was a good game. Macca was brilliant. He really took the piss out of whoever was in front of him. Pompey players got quite lary in the second half. A 2-2 draw would have been a fairer reflection of the game. Cox really turned Campbell inside out for the pen. Depite the result, we looked fit and relatively organised. The Malpas haters will no doubt look at the result not the performance. 

So, is Aljofree seriously injured? Someone near me said "Oh no, he hardly ever goes down". Yeah right, he's the biggest wimp in the squad.

And what still impressed me about Macnamee is that, every time, everyone knows he is going to go outside... he never cuts inside... and yet he still, somehow, manages to get a wicked ball in.

A man the size of Billy Payner really should be looking to hit the middle of the 6 yard box everytime Macnamee gets the ball, he'll score 15+ easy if he gets on the end of those crosses.

we played well, we passed it around fairly well, we pressed very well and were on the pompey players like a shot. Timlin played really well. Paynter did well up top, looked alot sharper.

Myself, Si and Rich thought the winger in the second half was Ricky Shakes.

We created more chances than they did and they by no means had a weakened side. The quality of crosses from JPM and McNamee were pretty good.

3-1 flattered Portsmouth. Their first goal however was really good.

Watched the replays on SSN and still not convinced either was a penalty.

McNamee is awesome and waaay too good for Swindon. He was up against some pretty good defenders in Lauren, Distin, Campbell, Paramoe and even Craine and he tore them all apart and made them look stupid on many occasion. Give him a life time contract now and I find it absurb that Watford couldnt find a use for this little magician. All his crosses were top notch as well.

One of the best and most skillful players we've had since Mark Walters, a joy to watch and every time he got the ball something was going to happen.

Also Peter fucking Crouch is fucking shit and is in no way shape of form worth 11 million. Missed an easy chance and other than that couldnt get past Ifil. Such an overrated footballer. They looked much better with Defoe and the trailist upfront.

that was the other thing. due to the opposition there was loads of 'day trippers' if you will yet no one from the club about advertising season ticket sales.

Surely you get someone around the ground before the game, in the concourse at half time handing out flyers and spearding the word.

Its these type of day trippers we've got to convince to go every week rather than sit in their arm chairs watching Sky.

Performance did help, but the result wont. Most people (even some who went to the game) will see 3-1 as a defeat where Portsmouth dominated and we only scored from a penalty.

I know its my own fault for reading it but some bloke on "Thisis" thinks our preseason results equate to relegation form.He says "2 draws and 2 losses is the same as  2 points from 12 in the league" or somthing like that. :D

Payner should have scored a header, apart from that he did well. Had a shot blocked, which was more so good defending than crap striking. Was also an inch away from getting on a cross....fair assestment bit harsh on Billy,

Paynter got into position well, got up infront of the defender. Did everything brilliantly and it looks such a certain goal. Harder to miss than score. Really dont know how he missed it.

Only black spot on a good game for Billy though. 99 times out of 100 he score that header.

Agree with most of what you saidon the game DV but Paynter was largely shit last night. Didn't win the ball except on one or two occasions. his movement was as good as mine (bad). His hold up play was weak and his touch was shockingly bad. And his heading and shooting, good grief.

It looked like it was his first game after the break and he was struggling for match fitness, but it wasn't. Maybe he was tired from the tour?

I'd go as far as saying Surrock looked more lively/a threat.

It's a shame because he (Paynter) has shown strength and quality at times, but to no consistency whatsoever. Time to shape up or ship out Billy.

I personally thought Blair did well when he came on, he held the ball up well and linked play.

We can get a bit over critical imo, it was after all a friendly! Big Pat looked sharp, Amankwah also impressed me and JPM was very good in the first half, not so effective in the 2nd when he moved inside.

McNamee was undoubtedly the star of the show, but there were a lot of other pluses, think Marsh could be a real find if he curbs his over enthusiasm a bit and starts looking for the simple ball a bit more. To liken him with dancing boy is a bit harsh.

On the negative side, Vincent showed a few times last night why we're looking for cover, his defensive play was ok but why can't he overlap? does he get a nosebleed if he goes past the halfway line?

Overall a really promising performance and if our finishing was a bit more clinical we could have easily got two or three more goals.

Yes Blair did do well, and yes we are critical for a friendly. Got to call it as you see it though.

And yes Marshall was as bad as Shakes.

And Vincent did overlap once running 3/4 the length of the pitch into the box to win a corner. I thought he was going to collapse.

I cant believe people think Amankwah was solid? He was shit. Useless on the ball as well, much prefer to have Jack Smith there. Mate from Swansea was pissing himself when we signed him saying he's one of the worst players they had there for years.

Can't be bothered to read the rest of the thread but MacNamee is seriously awesome and providing he stays fit he will be our star man next year.  Not sure how hes not playing in a higher league to be honest!  Liked the Pompey fans giving him a standing ovation wwhen he got subbed.

Kanyuka looks very composed and a great asset - shame they didnt play more of Morrison as would like to have seen them play alongside each other.

Fitness and sharpness has definitely improved IMO and they were more of a match for pompey than I thought.

Crouch looked all over the place when he came out but to see him stood next to MacNamee was priceless  :D

Oh and to add, when Blair came on he had a few decent touchs and looked rather good. Seemed to think before he made passes and most of which came off nicely.  If we find ourselves short of a decent CM due to injury or whatever, Id be tempted to chuck Blair in just behind the front two as think he could link up potentially quite well. I thought he was ok last season but he seems to get far more unnecessary stick. 

Downside has to be the food kiosks!!!  Seriously crap Mr Watkins, especially as he had replied to my complaint from last season that we would see a considerable improvement this year.  Will MacNamee be a home player only, will he be able to conjure up that magic away from home?

Yeah it was our pre match entertainment! and by the sound of it there was more movement in it than in Paynter and Crouch put together! :)

Macca is just superb! What a player. Probably the best i have seen here for a good 5 years maybe even more tbh. Let's hope he can play like that every week the only downside will be he'll be gone next year if he does.

Impressed with the front two. The look sharp and other than Paynter's sitter going wide they both did very well. Thought Blair did well when he came on as well.

I was mainly impressed with the whole team in general though. We looked to pass rather than hoof and you sometimes wondered if we passed it too much. We look solid and organised which is a good thing.

I must admit it sounded ok on the radio, quite promising going forward with Macca sounding very very lively.

Much opitmism for the coming season for the first time certainly since Wise and Poyet arrived.

Byrne did say they were in talks with 3 championship players in the "well known" positions of left back, centre midfield and right wing and that we are awaiting responses from the said players, though he did state they were Champiosnhip players I personally wouldnt be surprised to see that one of them was Shaun Maher who is on trial at Oldham at the moment.

That Marshall was shit. MacNamee was absolutely superb, while Paynter worked hard but couldnt hit a cows arse with a banjo.

Highlight for me though was Bennetts commentary - fucking hilarious

Crap, the only shot he missed was a sitter, but he got plenty else on target which was charged down.

Thought we looked pretty good, team closed down well and aside from the last 5 minutes looked strong and fit. Player that impressed most was undoubtedly McNamee but McGovern played one of his better games for us imo, he's somehow learnt how to tackle and even looked to take the ball on a couple of times. I hope that continues.

Paynter and Cox looked sharp up front - certainly our strongest strike partnership. Timlin was brilliant in the centre. I was quite impressed by the whole display, despite losing, the scoreline flattered Pompey and they had a strong team on the pitch.

bennett did have quite a good commentary on the go in the 2nd half, mostly involving paynter being shit, blair being a bit 'special' and sahar being israeli. and then the 3rd goal scorer running like a 'tard.

It was abit easy to get the goal scorer right.

Good game I thought, first time I'd seen a few of the lads.  Was happy with Timlin who I'd never seen as he'd only been on loan while I was away, Macca is awesome - my old man had been enthusing about him for ages but I don't think I realised quite how good he was - he was so good I was wetting myself with laughter...

Pat and Morrison are HUGE!  I thought Paynter was good personally and linked well with Cox who was good as always.  I saw something in Marshall - he was a bit over hungry for the game I think but against L1 opposition could settle down and be a decent player.  Blair looked much stronger to me and had a decent little cameo.

My biggest question mark is when Macca gets the ball yet we often only had Cox and Paynter in the box - where is a CM charging in late?  For me that is an area where we could bag quite a few goals, hopefully Easton will take responsibility for that once fit.

There's certainly potential in this team, they looked to play the game the right way for me but it is evident those 3 positions we're talking about need filling really. 

I'd be looking for a season long loan on a left back I think, can't see Hills offering too much and a decent season out of a 19-21 year old on loan could give Kennedy the time to push through and challenge himself.

All in all, I'm pleased with how we looked and was glad I made the journey for the game.  Roll on Tranmere! :)

I disagree. He won and held up the ball a few times which is quite good considering to get into Portsmouth defence you have to be 6ft 3 strong and black!!

He did well and linked up with Cox, alot of players seem to get stick that I just dont understand. Paynter is a good League One striker and if he stays fit and plays most of the season he'll get you 15 goals. Im confident of that


It was a pre-season friendly. I wouldnt take too much notice of it. We were never going to open and fully man all the kiosks for a friendly. Probably more fans turned up than they expected

Paynter held up the ball well I thought - especially when you're facing Distin and Campbell. Then you have to realise that for most of the first half we defended too deep (given the quality of the first half opposition line up you more or less expect that). This meant Paynter was getting even more isolated i.e. not entirely his fault is it?

I thought when we pushed on second half Paynter was linking up really well with all of the players as they got closer to him. I recall several time Paynter held up the ball and sprayed it out wide, or flicked the ball on for Cox to chase.

Paynter also chased the ball down a lot, as did the rest of the team. Also made some runs when needed to create some space. I thought it was a pretty good performance, aside from the completely unforgiveable miss.

Didn't notice people levelling much criticism at the defence, despite conceding 3 sloppy goals.

Sorry but we'll have to disagree. Last night he had the touch of a carthourse and mobility of La La, Dipsy, et al. The quality of opposition didn't affect this at all. Fact is McNamee put in a myriad of dangerous crosses which we converted 0.

I've got no issue with Paynter, just with his performance last night.

Marshall was rubbish. timlin had a good game i thought.

I thought Paynter had a decent game, he linked well with Cox and they looked like a partnership, good promise there I think.

I was concerned that we kept losing a lot of the ball in CM, Timlin done well and I think given time Allen may come good, but I think we need a decent backup for that position to give Allen time.

I also thought Marshall looked good on occasitions, you have to remember he has come from non league and was playing against prem opposition, I think he may be one that you take a chance on that he will come good.

Think people are being a bit hard on marshall be better to judge him against teams closer to our level.

I must have been watching another game. I thought Paynter looked unfit and did not contribute much to the game.

Following on from my comments on the food kiosks in the DR last night, I have had an e-mail from Nick Watkins.  Very apologetic and admitting to getting caught out with just one kiosk open.  Said that the kiosks will be under new management from the Tranmere game!!

 A mate who is well up in the business world, had met Mr W in London, on discovering a fan he asked said mate, what could be done about STFC's busy body fans....mate tongue in cheek suggested going into pubs to talk to fans.   :doh:

I spoke to a few Portsmouth fans up in Leeds the other night and they said the reports they were getting were that the scoreline flattered them, and that our wingers & strikers were excellent. It was nice to hear that from opposition fans, although none of them actually went they had heard it from others who did go... Bit gutted I missed it but feedback sounds very good.

Drums, trumpets and bells have no place in football. Pompey fans have gone from psychopathic to pathetic. Back in the 70's I used to have a tingle of excitement going to see them at Town because you didn't quite know whether you were going to be eating solids for a few weeks. You definitely needed your trainers. Around the Glue Pot was always interesting before and after.
Now, what a bunch of fairies. Drums for god sake. At least the trumpeter had a sense of humour despite being a retard. As for the bells - give me strength - thats about as gay as you can get without the need for Vaseline.
