The 40 over game, came about because of the Sunday League, back in the mid to late 60's, about the time when BBC2 came into being, they used to stick a game on a Sunday between a county and The International Cavaliers. The Cavaliers were often West Indies players or sub continental players, who were playing in the Lancs league. Games got decent crowds and TV got decent ratings. Because it was on a Sunday, there were strange laws...I don't think you could sell a ticket, but you could sell a programme. Similarly pubs closed at 2:00....so bars at games could only open then. Pubs reopened at 7:00, so out of expediency you had about 5 hours for a game, which was 40 overs each, using shortened run ups. When crowds started to fall for teh Sunday League and BBC showed less and less, it was shifted to todays game, which has now probably rightly had its day. Whilst the EPL is a good idea i do think having another one is a overkill. Why not just have the EPL, a 50 over comp and the County Championship. Surely that would be enough for one season anyway?

Unless they change the current 20/20 to a straight knock out, inviting some minor counties to take part too.
