Title: John Hills Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, July 11, 2008, 08:55:03 Who the fuck is he?
Quote FORMER Everton defender John Hills has emerged as Maurice Malpas' latest left-back target - although injury and a Ghanian triallist stand in the way of a move to Wiltshire. Town boss Maurice Malpas revealed earlier this week a former Championship defender would be joining up with the squad upon their return from Austria, if he has recovered sufficiently from ankle surgery. The Swindon Advertiser understand the player in question is 30-year-old Hills (pictured), who was released by Blackpool this summer having struggled with an injury last season. Hills, who has enjoyed successful spells previously at Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool, is hoping to be back in action within a fortnight and will hope Town can offer him a career lifeline. Malpas though has already warned Ghanian Akwasi Oduro could yet change his plans, with a decent week's trial in Austria, leaving Hills looking elsewhere for a club for next season. The Ghanian will need to do more though than he did in his Town debut last night, although a 2-2 draw with Champions League side Steaua Bucharest was enough to leave Malpas smiling. Goals from Simon Cox and an own goal from Romanian international Sorin Ghionea put Town in dream world, with a 2-0 half time lead, although Bogdan Stancu's effort and Banel Nicolita's last gasp equaliser took some gloss off the night. http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/swindontown/headlines/display.var.2390130.0.hills_fits_bill_for_town.php Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Luci on Friday, July 11, 2008, 09:04:30 Who the fuck is he? I believe hes a former Everton defender ;D Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Elvis on Friday, July 11, 2008, 09:05:03 I think you've answered your own question there Sam.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, July 11, 2008, 09:47:09 What's the need with "who the fuck is he" all the time - look it up :D The guy has over 200 League appearances across the tiers and has definately played against us before - he has good expericence.
However, all this injury stuff makes me more than a little cautious. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Lumps on Friday, July 11, 2008, 11:05:56 He's another one touched by the Luggy@Wendies kiss of death, injury curse. Haven't we recruited enough of the crocks that got the fat scot sacked from Hillsborough already? I thought this would end once he buggered off to Argyle.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Dazzza on Friday, July 11, 2008, 11:44:25 A couple of seasons ago he was a solid but unspectacular player well worth a nip but I have to say he doesn’t really generate much saliva and actually looks a bit of a ropey signing given his age, injuries, the fact he still injured and hasn’t played much of late.
Reminds me a bit of a crocked Steve Jenkins type of signing. As much as I loved the scruffiest man in the world he was at that stage where he was filling in the cracks of the squad. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, July 11, 2008, 11:46:52 A couple of seasons ago he was a solid but unspectacular player well worth a nip but I have to say he doesn’t really generate much saliva and actually looks a bit of a ropey signing given his age, injuries, the fact he still injured and hasn’t played much of late. Reminds me a bit of a crocked Steve Jenkins type of signing. As much as I loved the scruffiest man in the world he was at that stage where he was filling in the cracks of the squad. Agreed. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Power to people on Friday, July 11, 2008, 13:10:54 Smells of desperation, the player is still carrying an injury, or just go over it so is not going to be able to have a proper pre-season so his fitness will we well down and will need time to get fit again, and there's also the worry of a reoccurance of his injury.
I'd suggest he would be a risky signing, there must be better out there surely. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: strooood on Friday, July 11, 2008, 13:57:20 this signing would result in the world's most pronounced 'meh' eminating from yours truly.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: alanmayes on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:28:05 On the face of it,it doesn't fit the bill for the type of player we've recently been
trying to recruit. In age he's only 2yrs younger than Vincent and with his injuries, it would be risky.Surely a young, pacy, raw but promising youngster would fit the bill? This is where Ken Ryder, our new Chief Scout needs to come to the fore. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Lumps on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:30:58 I could see him as a non contract stop gap maybe, or even on a pay as you play deal. But he's not exactly what we're after is he?
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Colin Todd on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:32:13 Maybe we are trying to target a few experienced stady players as well?
The average age of our 1st team squad is quite low...... Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:33:24 I can't see a Northern based player coming down to Swindon on a Non-Contract.
We cannot sign him if he's got a background being a crock - it would be a waste of time. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Power to people on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:47:24 Malpas did say he'd like a bit of experience as well though didn't he, I suppose with Morrison, Kanuka, I'm a wanker, Jerel they are not that experieced but then there is Aljofree & Vincent that are experienced heads in there and J Smith isn't a youngster.....
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:48:35 Malpas did say he'd like a bit of experience as well though didn't he, I suppose with Morrison, Kanuka, I'm a wanker, Jerel they are not that experieced but then there is Aljofree & Vincent that are experienced heads in there and J Smith isn't a youngster..... Good for you, I'm glad you can admit it. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: nevillew on Friday, July 11, 2008, 14:49:01 If he got a series of consecutive games, would that be a run for the Hills ?
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, July 11, 2008, 15:00:40 I guess it depends on how Malpas defines experience.
Kevin Amankwaah - 150+ League games in League 1 & 2. Jack Smith - 120+ League games in the Championship, League 1 & 2 Jamie Vincent - 350+ League games in all four levels Jerel Ifil - 180+ League games in the Championship, League 1 & 2 Hasney Aljofree - 200+ Leagues in the Scottish Prem, Championship & League 1 & 2 and then Kanyuka & Morrison with limited first team experience. Yes, I'd say one more 150+ defender would be good - we should be bringing in players for the future, Hills at 30 - with injuries seems a combination that isn't good enough. (I know 30 isn't majorly old but with injuries he may as well be 35) But anyone coming in from the Championship will be either released injury prones like Hills or younger players with 15-20 league appearances and a good loan spell elsewhere (Mulgrew) - I would guess that there'll be no in between. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: DV on Friday, July 11, 2008, 15:07:54 Malpas did say he'd like a bit of experience as well though didn't he, I suppose with Morrison, Kanuka, I'm a wanker, Jerel they are not that experieced but then there is Aljofree & Vincent that are experienced heads in there and J Smith isn't a youngster..... Jerel Ifil is 26 and Jack Smith is 24. Plus Ifil has about 75 more career appreaneces under his belt? Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, July 11, 2008, 16:56:24 If he overlaps a winger its worth a shot.i suppose if he is solid enough it saves 150k that we were going to spend on mulgrew and maybe we can use that for a decent right winger.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Weasel on Friday, July 11, 2008, 17:29:50 If he overlaps a winger its worth a shot.i suppose if he is solid enough it saves 150k that we were going to spend on mulgrew and maybe we can use that for a decent right winger. Looking at the photo on the thisis site, he's not overlapping anything. By all means tell me if i'm wrong, but I've always thought* your stereotypical, speedy, overlapping, wing back doesn't have a belly you can make out through his shirt. *i say always, i hadn't thought about it before today - but i stand by it. Footballers should have less of a gut than me, fact. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Friday, July 11, 2008, 17:33:20 Well i think it's clear MM is keeping his options open here anyway. This guy on trial (if he impresses) will become the number one target. I think there's a third target as well.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Dazzza on Friday, July 11, 2008, 19:04:19 I wonder if we'll see a few more trialists post Austrian tour. I know the market is a tad slow but King, Wise and even Mumbles had a decent potpourri of odds and sods tagging along pre-season and usually pulled a couple out of the bag.
Malpas appears to be a little more discerning in what he’s brought along, which is no bad thing given the low turnover of players compared to recent years and the number of youth players coming through on a pro contract. Still it would be nice to see a couple more randoms on the tour. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Weasel on Friday, July 11, 2008, 20:41:52 Still it would be nice to see a couple more randoms on the tour. Where's Rodrigo Turnes when you need him? I thought he was going to be the dogs beans. Dodgy foreign triallists are ace.Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Friday, July 11, 2008, 20:46:13 Did anyone else get messages on MSN from a lad from Uruguay asking how he was doing? I did! Seemed pretty legit until we arranged to meet.......
*Disclaimer* the final part of that story may never have happened! Title: Re: John Hills Post by: onefinfitton on Friday, July 11, 2008, 20:47:49 Turnes plays for Weston-s-Mere. I kid you not!!!
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, July 12, 2008, 11:53:37 Turnes plays for Weston-s-Mere. I kid you not!!! Not any more, he was released by them after only playing 13 games in total, most of those as sub....Ben Wells ahs just signed for Weston joining Gurney, Comyn-Platt and Holgate there and they are trying to sign former town player Ian Herring on loan from Salisury as well! Title: Re: John Hills Post by: pumbaa on Sunday, July 13, 2008, 06:50:16 Not any more, he was released by them after only playing 13 games in total, most of those as sub....Ben Wells ahs just signed for Weston joining Gurney, Comyn-Platt and Holgate there and they are trying to sign former town player Ian Herring on loan from Salisury as well! Title: Re: John Hills Post by: strooood on Sunday, July 13, 2008, 11:47:16 i still love ccp, what a fucking legend.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: janaage on Monday, July 14, 2008, 12:05:01 I think if we sign Hills I'd worth a gamble to play William(s) Hills together.
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: JPC82 on Monday, July 14, 2008, 13:57:35 Ben Wells is a good signing for Weston.
Mustapha Carayol has signed a 2 year deal with Torquay Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Batch on Monday, July 14, 2008, 14:06:18 If he got a series of consecutive games, would that be a run for the Hills ? If he signs on he'll have to sing to the squad (see Eds blog) . If that's the case then all well and good, but he's at his best when singing with an accompaniment. That's right...... The Hills are alive with the sound of music. Title: Re: John Hills Post by: janaage on Monday, July 14, 2008, 14:08:29 Or he could sing with Paynter, they could call themselves...
The Hillbillies Title: Re: John Hills Post by: nevillew on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 15:26:14 I thought he was an untested player, coming from Hartlepool
There is a green Hill, far away...... Title: Re: John Hills Post by: alanmayes on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 15:30:16 More like Over the Hill and far away :)

"He's OK but not great. Played for us 3 times now and good in second spell before going to Gillingham. We signed him again last year, which I didn't think was a good idea. He didn't play much - squad player. When I saw him, he looked a bit slow and always likely to commit a foul. He did get MoM on some away matches, but didn't see them. He could do OK in Division 1 but not a Championship player." Title: Re: John Hills Post by: tans on Thursday, July 17, 2008, 10:57:03 The fact that he played for Gillingham should be enough justification for him not to sign here. ;)
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: JPC82 on Monday, August 11, 2008, 22:03:30 well John Hills has found his level, signed for Fleetwood Town!!
Title: Re: John Hills Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, August 11, 2008, 22:12:42 well John Hills has found his level, signed for Fleetwood Town!!
