auto download of fucking microsoft fucking XP windows fix (KB951748), my firewall (ZA pro) won't let fuck all through. Had to turn the fucker off to find out what the problem was. Work round is turn firewall down to medium, or deinstall hot fix, or put your DNS servers in your trusted zone. FUCK OFF.

Ah, that's why I've had random problems after an update today. Worked out it was a case of moving the setting down to medium but hadn't investigated why.

Zonealarm is getting more resource hungry and creating too many conflicts. I'm going to ditch it from my pc soon - in fact my pc has so many BSOD recently I'm just going to reformat the bastard and be done with it.

I turn my about-updates off as it often cocks everything up.

Not having any problems with XP & Zonealarm myself. (Fingers crossed)

Ubuntu's fucking shite. PclinuxOS is the one you want if you're a newbie. It's hardware detection is superior to Ubuntus.
Personally I use Arch because i'm a true Linux snob.  :)

Zonealarm's got worse ever since it was taken over by some company called Check Point. I had the same problem yesterday, downloaded the new security patch and then. bang no internet access. Wasn't happy about either removing the patch or downgrading the firewall, so have manually set the ports I need. Seems to be working ok so far

New update from Zonealarm, be warned though it then runs scanningprocess.exe which will take up 99%cpu for quite some time

Oooh, hardcore. Never had any problem with Ubuntu's hw detection since deciding to see what all the fuss was about a year ago and liked it enough to switch from SuSE. I like the "build from scratch" idea with Arch - clean, optimised, minimal - but I don't have the time these days so it's binary installs and let apt do the updates. thank fuck for that I'll shall slide the little fucker in tonight. On the whole I got ZA cos it was cheap and I haven't had many problems. This was probably MS marketing dept trying to arse fuck CheckPoint software - I can't believe they hadn't tested it! i tried sticking the dns ip addresses in the Trusted Zone (come into my trusted zone little server) and it didn't kick.
At least at work I use a Unisys ClearPath+ running OS2200 - put a virus on that you fucking windows retards (yes indeed Reg it is related to UNIVAC 1 and yes I am Chief Nerdburglar)

It really isn't that time consuming to be fair. Print off the WIKI beginners guide,run the iso and get stuck in. If I can do it anyone can. I can tell you, once you've got it running, it's one bad ass minimal system. I'm using KDEmod as my DE and it's fucking brilliant. Like they say, KDE on steroids.
Don't be put off, once installed, the package manager is the nuts. Much better imo, than apt or yast. 
Plus, Arch has a rolling release, so a simple 'pacman -Syu' and you're system is upgraded. I run it once a day, easy as fuck.
Everything on my system is just what i've installed, with none of that extra junk that's not needed. Beautiful.
Once you've tried Arch you won't go back.

Me too, I removed Zonealarm and installed AVG and Comodo instead. Far less resources being used as well, so I may do the same to the laptop.

Not sure if anyone else has a problem with ZoneAlarm but there seems to be problem with the latest update which causes the PC to take ages to shutdown:

Agreed, ever since CheckPoint have taken it over they seem to think that testing their software properly is no longer necessary.

Am going to try to sit it out. Not noticing too much trouble myself.
