Title: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: sheepshagger on Monday, July 7, 2008, 09:01:29
So Charlie says no......

Why do we all think this has happened ?

Price agreed - personal terms agreed - player says no !

What is going on here then ???

This is very unusual. Is he that desperate to play for Southend?

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: LucienSanchez on Monday, July 7, 2008, 09:13:26
It's less of a risk for him that way... he knows the area, and his potential new teammates...

Post by: alanmayes on Monday, July 7, 2008, 09:35:07
The only way we'll know is if he does indeed go to Southend.Malpas coached him
at Under 21 level,so there was always a link there.Wolves asked MM not to talk
to the player until a fee agreed.Wonder if Southend tapped him up behind our
backs?

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: gasha1 on Monday, July 7, 2008, 09:40:40
The strange thing is, I thought Southend weren't prepared to pay the fee Wolves are asking. Apparently they (Wolves) found out about our interest and trebled the fee. I think Southend had agreed 50k last season. So if Southend don't match our bid the guy's marooned at Wolves unless there's another club we don't know about.

Got to say im suprised. Would have bet on Mulgrew signing for us. Especially as he has played for Malpas in the under 21s. Can only think that League 1 football and our history of problems made him say no.

Meh, if we were second choice or leverage for screwing another club out of a better deal then good riddance.

If he's staying in the Midlands area fair enough.

No panic just yet. No point in signing sub standards for the sake of it. That's what the loan market is for.

if he goes to southend then it will be no surprises.

very disappointing indeed ....

should we be getting worried yet?

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: stfctom on Monday, July 7, 2008, 12:49:15
I don't belive that we should be worrying. Give it another 2 weeks and if noone new has come in then maybe start asking why. Even if that fails, there is still the loan market. We have generally picked up some decent loans in recent years. Ifil, Cox, Timlin to name some current ones. There are always decent ones available...I remember Carrick and Milner plus not to forget Davis RIP.

Does anyone belive that the lack of summer signings is having a knock on affect on the season tickets? I for one can understand why some people would think so, however I don't belive that is the reason sales have slowed.

I doubt signing big names such as mulgrew and richie jones would have had much of an effect

It'll be like that last-minute panic on Football Manager soon - you've release all the cretins you hate but then suddenly realise you don't have enough players for next season! Hit the panic button, sign anyone!!!

Important thing is that Malpas is talking to new players already - he doesn't want to play us, so be it. We move on...

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: lebowski on Monday, July 7, 2008, 16:45:40
Heard about this at work today. Very disappointed. Reading between the lines on this one, it would appear that Charlie read the Adver forum to get an idea of what Swindon fans are like, and decided he didn't want to play in front of a bunch of fucking imbeciles.

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, July 7, 2008, 16:50:24
The amount of negativity on the Adver site is incredible - I cannot get my head around some of the statements I've read on there... It is their opinion and they are entitled to it but you just leave that site wondering why they bother - there's always an issue with them.

All teams have these type of fans but it's amazing how they've all assembled on that site - yes, TEF has a few moaners but mostly constructive and logical ones!

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: STFC_Gazzza on Monday, July 7, 2008, 16:57:34
The people on the adver forum are bloody stupid. Thing is clearly the agent has changed his mind due to him agreeing terms etc... ah well we move on!

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: Kinky Tom on Monday, July 7, 2008, 17:04:20
The way they go on over there is doing my head in - with attitudes like that you could justify saying Alex Ferguson should have been sacked for not being able to convince Shearer to join Utd all those years ago.  Some people have got to wake up, we're a fucking 3rd division team for crying out loud.

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: Reeves for King on Monday, July 7, 2008, 17:21:50
Good job in my opinion. Not having a dig at Malpas or anything but would it not be more sensible to spend any money on a striker rather than spending money on left-backs. Good strikers who score goals cost money but half-decent left-backs who can provide competition with the half-decent left back we already have can be picked up for nothing. This is League One and good players can be found for practically nothing - look at the example of Nicholas who was free and bangingly good until he took to smashing up cars.

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: Rich Pullen on Monday, July 7, 2008, 17:26:05
Rate them or not - Cox, Corr, Paynter, Peacock, Sturrock & Joyce are all under contract. There just isn't enough room for another striker on a full-time basis.

I agree that there are bargins out there - but people like Nicholas were out-of-contract, Mulgrew is under contract.

Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, July 7, 2008, 17:49:58
This is a strange one. Mulgrew was the sort of player we were hoping Malpas would sign (Scots Under 21) so it is dissapointing. I wonder if we have played this one a little too much by the book, whereas another club have been talking to the player more directly? It is humiliating for the club that we have now been basically rejected by both Jones and Mulgrew, its unfortunate, these things happen.

Just hope Malpas doesnt read any of the idiot comments on the Adver site. Theres a lot of kids on there who dont have a clue. The least he deserves is to be judged on the pitch. Its worrying that there is this baying hate mob ready to have a go.

End of the day we have just saved ourselves £150k on a player. Because if he was unhappy with the move he would have been mediocre at best most likely. Always did seem a lot when you consider what we got Cox for. Ive always said we should wait until the last week of the transfer window. Just focuses the mind that bit more for these players. Fools on the Adver site are saying we'll be left with the rubbish, thats crap. Weve still got some real good money to spend. Last thing we want to do now is go and spend a stack of money on someone who really is rubbish, just to appease a few kids on lunch break. Still plenty of time.

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town
Post by: DV on Monday, July 7, 2008, 17:53:30
....and by all accounts Jones fucked us (...and Port Vale around) he didnt reject us as such, we told him where to go...

Alright chaps,

Dont really contribute a lot on here but a keen reader. I have to say I am chuffed that Im not the only one to think what a bunch of complete fuckwits they are on thisis.

That 'RedKen' guy - is he mental ? , talk about a broken record, he doesnt seem to give Malpas a chance about anything.

Also, am I am the only one who finds it amusing the way they will post a totally out of our reach players name and suggest they are worth signing , such as 'Theo Walcott cant get a regular game at Arsenal - he must be worth a shout'

Total MONGS  >:(

This went on for too long, the outcome was inevitable.  This has all the smell of a better personal deal somewhere else.  There are hundreds of out of work footballers, including left backs that can play in the third tier.  These occurrences usually work out for the best.

Sounds like it was his missus that did not fancy it.

"That was an extremely frustrating weekend. I thought the deal was done and sorted on Friday night after we had spoken on the phone.

"The clubs had already agreed a price for him, personal terms had been agreed and he was just going to go away and speak to his wife about everything.

"He got back to me on Sunday and said "probably no," I made a couple more phone calls but he was definite in the end.

Although we'd all like signings now,Fitton and MM are quite correct to try and find the right
quality type of players. We've got until Aug 31st,players always become available during
august.Remember last year,Sturrock signed 3 players just before the dealine.

Aberdeen's nice, the granite looks good, especially in the summer.  The lad's Scottish so fair play to him for heading back up.  As others have said just pleased he didn't join Saffend.

Fun to be had on BBC 606 with Southend Fans

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A38399656

comments like

"Swindon Town - Is someone having a laugh - STFC fan poking fun at Southend! History is history, SWTF is a tin pot club with fan base to go and a shocking ground"

deserve to be replied.

why do Southend suddenly think they are such a big team

another comment:

"Past is History.

Southend are moving up and growing, Swindon Town are not and have not been for a while now.

SOUTHEND UNITED ARE AS IT STANDS A BIGGER SUPPORTED CLUB, WITH BETTER RESOURCES AND A NEW STADIUM ON THE WAY THAT WOULD PUT THE LIKES OF THE CG TO ABSOLUTE SHAME!"

SOUTHEND UNITED ARE AS IT STANDS A BIGGER SUPPORTED CLUB

Probably true if you look at their crowds for the last few months of last season compared to ours.

WITH BETTER RESOURCES

High unlikely. We've got loadsa money.

AND A NEW STADIUM ON THE WAY THAT WOULD PUT THE LIKES OF THE CG TO ABSOLUTE SHAME!"

Again, probably true.

Fair play to Southend. They have just about doubled their attendances in 2 years.

Still only getting 8,000 though. We'll get that this season.

Not all new stadiums put ours to shame. The Walkers is still half finnished. Some of these new grounds are going to look very shabby very quickly. The Kassam springs to mind.

They are never bigger than us. No history either.

Title: Re: Mulgrew Rejects Town

Rivalry aside - you're right the Kassam did age very, very quickly.

I hope we don't one day go for the "bowl stadium", unless they try and make it at least a little bit unique!!!

The fact that Mulgrew rejected Southend says alot - they're no different to us, other than the fact they've enjoyed a bit of Championship football recently. I believe the beating they got against Doncaster could prove to be a significant turning point for them - as Brighton was for us.
