Just got this email from a Cheltenham Supporter... Not sure if its true or not...

Good evening Mr. Stanley,

I've just been looking through your website and thought you'd probably be interested to some know something I've heard today. My name is *********, I'm currently involved with Cheltenham Town F.C (as was my father) and I am a lifelong fan of the Robins, even through the non league days. My reason for emailing you is that a few of the staff in and around today were trying to quell some rumblings coming from within the club, and after some poking and prodding, it turns out that our striker Steven Gillespie has been talking to Swindon after the club and his agent were contacted by your assistant David Burn (apologies if the name is wrong, I haven't had time to search) and Gillespie has spoken to Maurice Malpas after the club gave permission. There is a fee involved and the possibility of a player in return was mentioned but that's all I could get out. It's almost certain that Steve is now mulling over an offer from your club with his family and agent but signs are it is not good... for us at least.

You may be wondering why I am emailing you, but I feel the need to share information if one of our players plans to do the dirty on us, so to speak. If you do choose to let this out (and please, feel free), then do not mention my name. I am sincerely hoping that this move does not come off but it appears there is truth to it and it is also appearing likely he'll join you. The club have also been contacted by three other league one clubs, who I shall not name, but Gillespie wishes to remain local.

I will try and find more information for you. I'm hoping that this email will start something beneficial for both of us, you may use me as your source and maybe in return, I could use information from you?

Well, a couple of fans that I work with have been pessimistic all year about Cheltenham's ability to score. The consistent message that they gave me was that Brooker was the only danger they had and Gillespie was shite. Will check that I got the right end of the stick in the morning.

I've only seen him play briefly as a late sub at Ashton Gate on Darius Henderson's debut - he was rubbish but as already mentioned he was a kid back then. I know he's scored a couple of blinders.

I always thought Gillespie was a) Good, and b) a right winger.

Nethertheless, he scored a fair few goals last year in anappalling team. We could do worse.

I still think Paynter and Cox are good enough to fire us to the playoffs, however.

MAURICE Malpas has categorically' denied rumours linking Town with a move for Cheltenham striker Steve Gillespie.
The former Liverpool and Bristol City front man has attracted attention from the Championship and League One following an impressive season which saw him hit 16 goals as Cheltenham avoided the drop on the final day.
But after being a rumoured target for Town, Malpas has been quick to rule out a move down the A417 for the hit man.
Town already have a healthy array of striking options including Simon Cox, Lee Peacock, Billy Paynter, Blair Sturrock, Barry Corr and Ben Joyce, and with that in mind, Malpas revealed his transfer priorities lie elsewhere on the pitch.
With Cheltenham also believed to value Gillespie at around £300,000, Town's manager revealed that, even if he was interested, the forward is well out of their reach.
Malpas told the Swindon Advertiser: "I can categorically state that we have never even mentioned him (Gillespie) as a possibility.
"Firstly, I need to get other players in other positions before I even look at a striker.
"And also I would imagine that Cheltenham would be asking for a fee, so that rules us out anyway."

I assume he means substantial fee. I'd hate to think we can't afford any kind of fee and would be limited soley to free transfers.

We won't be spending six figure sums on players this season I don't think. Well that's the impression I get from comments inside the club (Malpas, Fitton and Watkins).

I will still go free transfer/no free transfer. The point i was making is that it may have been a good idea to keep quiet about playing budgets/transfer fees- comments like those from Maplas may not help the cause as some people will wait to see the team before they commit. Thats all

they aren't after 6 grand, I think they're fairly minted.

we won't be spending money on players such as Gillespie I think.  Theyn did day they would spend if the right player became available but it would need to be a player they could get a substantial return on.  I read that as meaning some bright prospect from an Academy at Prem tem, someone who with a few seasons of first team football behind them could be worth multiples of any fee we pay.  I think we are ruling out paying for lower league bits and pieces players, the sort who are 27 had a good year here and there but not likely to bring in cash later on when they leave us.  Sort of Bill Paynter ish type players I guess, or Gillespie!

Exatly at this time of year there arel oadsd of players being released . out of contract so it is up to the manager to get it right to pick up a few bargains, with a decent scouting network in place though I'm sure they are aware of some of the decent players.

Well Gillespie is off then... handed in his transfer request today!

He is off to Scunthorpe as they have £1mill burning a hole in their pocket from the sale of Martin Paterson to Burnley and he wont cost more than £300k. Apparently it was Colchester that have already bid £300k for him that was turned down.

My guess is that the club in Question is Carlisle Utd.....they have a few quid and Cheltenhams ex manager!

I think scunthorpes manager has openely come out and admitted hes out of the race for gillespie.

That's a ridiculous amount of money for an average league one player.

I could be wrong, but I think Cheltenham needed to put the price up a fair bit because Bristol City have a pretty big sell on clause.

Also you have to remember Gillespie had another 2 years left to run on his contract. With so many free agents and short term contracts these days players value is often determind by their contract and not their ability.

WDP reckon that there's a 20% sell on clause to Bristol City.Ridiculous fee even with that included
in the deal.Colchester with their new ground, seem to be prepared to throw some  money around.
