Title: Very Sad
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, 18:15:55
Nearly shed a tear reading this.Always like seeing this bloke on telly and one of the only real nice guys in football these days

SIR BOBBY ROBSON - But for the past 15 months he has been living with the bottom line. Time is running out.

His health is failing and a 16-year battle with cancer is beginning to come to an end.

He walks with a pronounced limp these days. He has restricted use of his left arm and almost no use of his left hand. The loss of independence has been crushing.

He can't drive or play golf or tend his beloved garden. He can't tie his shoes or knot his ties (he has always loved ties) or fold his suits neatly or place them on hangers.

He eats fish, rather than meat, because he can't use a knife and it feels as if every second sentence he utters is, “Elsie? Are you there?” The frustration drives him crazy.

“I never thought I would finish like this, with this disability,” he complains sometimes to friends. “When I was 72, I was on the pitch every day; I had an active body, an active mind; I prided myself on being fit all of my life.”

But Elsie will just shake her head and say with a laugh: “What do you mean 'fit all your life?' You've had cancer five times!”

Cancer. He has always treated the most dreaded of illnesses like a mild dose of flu.

Top man, great manager and always put a smile on my face with his misspronounced players names and ramblings, when he does go it will be a huge loss to football and to humanity, he gave lots of his time to good causes.

Brilliant quotes always liked the Carl Court one.

Five rounds with Cancer is some goingbut there seems to be some life left in the old dog yet I just hope he can enjoy the time he's got left.

Dude's a legend, hope he enjoys whatever time he's got left.

Bloody hell Fatbury!!!  I didn't know that!  RIP Tommy, 51 years old????  My word that's terrible!

Robson was a good enough manager, not a legend in my mind, but he's always come across as a nice enough bloke.  Hope all goes well with the old man.

Cancer is a cunt, by the time you get to that stage it's very hard to enjoy whatever time you have left. Just hope he's around the people he loves and when he does go it is not too stressful. I don't think you'd be able to ask for more.

He was in Ipswich last week as there was an open top bus celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of Ipswich winning the cup in 78.

He was looking old but in all fairness he must be 76ish so that's expected. Hope he's got a fair bit of life left in him, top man.

Yeah I saw him and thought it sad how Brian Barwick had to stay behind him to make sure Bobby was fine on his feet, the bloke is a total legend and what he has done in football has bene fantastic, one of the few england managers that people never have a bad word to say about.

Let's hope that he has still got a good few years left in him though...the bloke is a fighter and will not go down without a fight that's for sure.

It will be a sad day when he has passed.

That is simply not true, he was treated awfully by the press in the late 80's.  Nowadays he's treated well, but not at the time.

On a personal level it was terrible to see a man, a shadow of his former self, brought down to that by such a horrible illness.

Post by: janaage on Monday, May 19, 2008, 14:47:09
No it's not mate, it's not just the press, in 88 when england were dumped out on the euro's Robson wasn't a popular man.  This legend that seems to have engulfed the man's life is a falsehood.

Thank God for the lucky run in 90 which has catapulted him to the hall of fame.  1990 World Cup has single handedly erased the memory of 88 and to a certain extent Maradona's goal erased the memory of the oh so average 86 campaign.

But who am I to get in the way of a good story.

That’s Bullshit Jan he has always been regarded as a Top man and a lovely bloke no one can deny that. Ok maybe a few got on his back but that is football and I am sure 99% of fans all agree he is a lovely bloke which is what we are saying.

As for getting in the way of a good story again that is bullshit a person is a legend based on individuals opinions the very fact that nearly everyone on here has said he is a legend suggests that he is in most peoples eyes, irrelevant of what happened in the 80s

He got some shit when England lost every game at Euro 88.  Quite rightly too, we sucked arse.

Thats the only time in his career that he has taken any significant abuse.  The bloke is a legend.

That's my point BR, as this thread proves, not many people do.

As I have stated before I have nothing against Bobby Robson at all, he has always come across as a nice fella, and it's not nice seeing him the frail old man that he has become.

Yeah, just cos I don't recall it doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

I was begining to think I dream that reaction Adje, cheers for that.  I think it was Emlyn Hughes who went on TV and demanded that Robson was sacked two games into Mexico 86, public opinion of him had sunk so low..

I too am glad that he's being given respect now, but it does strike me a little odd when no one admits the negative side to his reign - and that's my last post on the matter - I promise (HURRAH say the TEF'ers).

That's true, when you see these programmes looking back to yester year's highlights it always amuses me as some z list celeb put today's slant on events from ages ago.

A la the Maradona handball, according to some people the whole country if not the world leapt up and claimed handball straight away.  Although if you listen to the live radio commentary they thought Shilton was appealing for offside originally, and then the slow motion reply revealed all.

Now (if I can come over all jan), the performances in Euro 96 were bad then good in equal measure.  Bad vs Switzerland, bad first half vs Jocks, good second half, awesome vs Holland, total shite vs Spain, good vs Germany.  Hardly that good and all at Wembley.

Agree about Hoddle though...being sacked for sharing the views of millions of people about reincarnation was stupid.  And despite his views on reincarnation, people still refer to him as a born again Christian...how the fuck does that work, then?
