Title: Rhys Evans : I never wanted to leave
Post by: STFC_Gazzza on Friday, May 2, 2008, 07:11:42
Oh dear. I think he feares the townend

Says in todays adver that he never wanted to leave. Says the reason he left was because Dennis Wise spoke to Sean O’Hanlon first even though he was named player of the year. He also says the club would not pay him a reasonable amount of money so he was FORCED OUT.

Now if I re-call he said he wanted to play in League 1 and didn’t want to drop to league 2. NOT ONCE He said he wanted to stay I don’t think.

I think someone is a bit scared of the town end!

That's a load of bollocks, the things he's said about Swindon since he left are fucking shocking. What a coward, he's completely backtracked on what he said before. Good job the game doesn't mean anything really, but we all know he flaps under pressure so I hope the town end make his life hell.

"THE TRUTH!" (IT WAS EVERYONE ELSE'S FAULT)

"I wanted to stay and help Swindon back up and I also felt I owed something to the people who voted for me as player of the season. But when Dennis Wise came in as manager he contacted Sean O'Hanlon on his first day but never phoned me.

"Blackpool was a bad decision and looking back of course I have regrets moving there.

"I even had serious doubts on the morning of signing and phoned my dad - because I did have bad feelings about it.

"I wanted to stay at Swindon, it is important to say that. I was honest enough to Mark Devlin at the time that I'd had talks with Blackpool but I also made it clear I did not want to go.

""I said if they could get near an offer I thought was reasonable I would stay. I was not asking for the same as Blackpool were offering, because obviously they were in a higher division.

"I knew what the other players were on at the club roughly and what I was asking for was not extortionate.

"I did not expect to be the highest paid player. Mark Devlin seemed quite happy with the figures at first."

"Considering I had been voted player of the year I thought it was strange he did not even get into contact with me.

"Mark Devlin reassured me they were still talking through the budget but I was not convinced by what he was saying.

"They then said they were going back to their original offer and one-year deal with money that was poor in anyone's books.

"I don't regret leaving because I had no choice.

"I do feel let down by the club but I still remember some great times there."

I like Rhys Evans, on the few occasions I bumped into him on a night out he was a model pro, always with a bottle in his hand, of water, nice polite, not up himself, nice bloke.

Fellas when are some of our fans gonna realise that these lads need to earn enough money to support their families.  What Rhys says is true the fact he wasn't offered what he needed meant he was forced to look elsewhere.

If my company offered me rubbish money I would be forced to leave whether I wanted to stay or not, as I have a mortgage to pay etc...

Not saying he is not a good lad but why give stupid reasons why you left and contradict what he said in the past. He could have said "i had a good time at swindon, still look for results, but want 3 points for millwall" I know it sells paper so no doubt the adver stirred the pot etc to get fans on his back etc but still... Just wait til Curo returns! :)

Agreed Bushey, any abuse (over and above good natured banter) would be uncalled for in my opinion, the bloke played well for us and left when an opportunity came up.

Agree with that, also Gazza I think you need to understand what the truth was and what in fact was the usualy adver reporting.

I dont understand why some of our fans hate him so much.  He moved to a club in a higher league for a more money on a longer contract after a few years of decent service.

I sort of think it was unecessary to bring up why he left really...  don't think he should get any OTT abuse. He is bound to get some stick being a former player though. On a side note, Evans was brilliant in our playoff season! I think he has just opened himself up for abuse though by bringing up the past.

Gary, I can imagine the shock waves that that kind of story would have created throughout the media world.  "Ex player enjoyed time at old club, but wants to beat them tomorrow", that really would have got us talking about it.  FFS mate that would quite possibly be one of the most boring articles ever.

The Adver have interviewed Rhys and made a meal out of the "juicey" bits, I bet Rhys can't even remember saying "I never wanted to leave Swindon".     How come when Peacock told a TEF'er he doesn't really like speaking to the adver because they misquote him we think fair enough, then as soon as an ex-player is quoted, we take the article as Gospel.

Give the bloke a break, he left for more money, as 99% of us would have done, especially if we had a family to support.

No I'm not saying it's the Adver's fault as such I'm just stating that when Sir Lee Peacock tells fans the Adver misquotes and elaborates certain parts of interviews, we think oh right fair enough, then as soon as a story like this comes out a certain number of fans get all upset about it as the headline screams "I never wanted to leave!!".

Read the article and there's little to nothing to get annoyed about, the bloke was doing the best for his famille.

I don't like Rhys Evans because he always blames someone else and has an excuse for everything. Like his shit kicking being because one of his legs is slightly longer than the other........I mean come on of all the crap excuses. Then whenever he made a mistake it was always someone elses fault, and now he's blaming others for him leaving. His biggest problem though is that he thought he was better than he was and got found out at Blackpool who rate him as one of their worst keepers of all time.

Rhys Evans is ancient history as far as I'm concerned - and that interview is just a generic "I hope those who hated me have forgotten - here's a peace-pipe PLEASE SMOKE IT" (maybe not the latter bit).

Evans had one half decent season and otherwise was fucking gash, he also had an annoying tendancy to thinkhe was whiter than white and never take responsibilty for when he was cack

After Griemik, I thought it was impossible to find a keeper who had worse kciking than him, and that really really bugged me about Evans. The opposition fans would actually laugh at him.

spot on sir.
he may have won player of the year but he was shit that season(the others were generally worse)i didn't vote as it was a total waste that year imo.

he moved on because he thought it was a step up from where we found ourselves, the money was better and his best mate played for blackpool.and we have heard tales about contracts before haven't we? seems stuff was promised time and again which wasn't actually on offer when it came to signing.

he's not a player that deserves any abuse imo.friendly banter and a round of applause for his efforts while here.

I won't be giving im any abuse tomorrow at all but I won't be going mad showing my appreciation for him either. In my eyes hes just another thats come and gone.

The reason he had a poor spell at Blackpool was because he played on with a groin injury as all their other keepers were injured and as a result wasnt really 100 percent and as a result made a few bad errors - the fans turned against him and he eventually stood down to have the operation (double hernia!) and Rachubka took his place after he recovered from his injury ...

I still rate him ... will be interesting to see how he plays tomorrow thats for sure. If we do sell Brez or Smith next season he would be a good replacement for a free transfer

Of course he deserves abuse tomorrow. He's the oppositions keeper for fucks sake. You've got to abuse them as much as you can. Don't give a fuck about the article, a load of bollocks from both sides.

Janaage- hope this informal enough! IIRC, it came down, as it always does, to length of contact and financial terms. We wanted Rhys to stay on, but on terms we could afford- Dennis was convinced he could get another keeper in (I think we had Phil Smith on board by then), if we couldn't agree terms, and Dennis' priorities were on other areas of the team. Rhys was made a good offer by Blackpool, and we couldn't match it, and there were no hard feelings when he decided to move to Blackpool.

As for Rhys Evans... never rated him. People would say "for all his faults he's a good shot stopper...". Of course he is, that's why he's a goalkeeper.

He's not a good keeper though.......Reading the article Evans says Wise didn't even bother to contact him when he took charge so obviously Wise realised that was not very good too thankfully. Both Smith and Brez are substantially better keepers. If Evans ever came back here it would be a step back. The only reason people ever thought he was any good was because he played for the England Under 21's but by the end most people were losing patience with him.

When Evans played for QPR at teh CG around 02...think Jerome Thomas scored a fairly memorable goal for them....he was getting called sheepshagger by the less cultured denizens of the TE, due to the obvious Welshness of his name... it proved futile to explain to the masses he was from Swindon.  I was giving him stick for being from Swindon and never having played for us.

It is a disgrace Evans ever won player of the year. I only realised how rubbish he was when we signed Brez on a free transfer.

To me he is persona non grata at the CG. Yet another player who was directly responsible for our relegation and refused to take any blame for it whatsoever.

He is a model professional. So is Jack Smith. Both were players were starting in 05-06 and neither are/were good enough for this level.
