Rangers were negative - never looked like scoring - but Walter Smith got it spot on.

Fair play to them.

I thought Rangers deserved nothing at all and I for one hope Zenit win the final. Totally negative football all through the competition by Rangers

If I am honest the quality is lacking in this seasons UEFA Cup and it show when poor teams like Rangers, and Bayern for that matter get to the quarter finals. As a Bayern fan I would hold my hands up and say they have been utter shite in this seasons competition and have been very fortunate to get as far as they did but the luck ran out big time.

Not negative, more tactically astute.  When you have the players Rangers have (i.e very poor) you work to your strengths playing solid as a team and trying to nick a result here or there.  Rangers would have gone out few rounds back if they had played "positive" football, whats the point in attacking those teams when they will just find the gaps and destroy you.

The results Rangers have had in the last few rounds have been awesome and Walter Smith is an incredible manager.  Last night was there 60th game of the season and the players still had the character and commitment to see the result through.  Awesome display, come on the Gers in the final now  :beers:

I hate it when people call it negative, what is negative about winning

Was there not a Brazil manager who was sacked for not winning the World Cup with enough style, or something like that.

So negative they won every game.

Got their tactics spot on, and fair play to them. Deserve to be in the final.

Playing for boring 0-0 draws is not winning

They won in Lisbon away in the last round.  Against Florentina it was damage limitation they were playing a team from a much better league with much better players, 0-0's in this situation are as good as wins.

Agree with the hun about the hun.  I still blame Walter Smith's negative tactics for Scotland's failure to qualify (and to a certain extent Big Eck's), the results against the Ukraine and Georgia were awful, we should have gone there and played football, not sat and defended for 90 mins.

Rangers are a horrible team to watch and I hope STFC never go down this route, football is meant to be a form of entertainment after all.

Come on Zenit!!!

Yes but it makes no sense to be entertaining if you are not as good as your opponents.  If Rangers had tried to attack teams they would have gone out in the early rounds of UEFA cup.  Mourinho wont be remembered at Chelsea for his boring style he will be remembered for the trophys he won, it will be the same with Walter at Rangers.

Playing defensively and then winning on penalties was the method Italy used to win the World Cup...

Zenit will win it. Miss their star striker though. Very under-rated team.

Agreed, quicker and more skilful than either Fiorentina or Sporting. And they'll have Arshavin back. If Rangers can hold out against Zenit they'll have earned the bloody Cup.

Nice to see a bitter German and yesterday's Zenit win was a pleasant surprise, but surely Bayern should have won considering that they're a bigger Club than Barcelona.

It might be boring but Rangers played to what was their best tactic and that was to keep it tight and grind the game out, job done.

We will see, Rangers have been written off throughout the UEFA cup and keep defying the odds.  I wouldn't bet against one more suprise result  :D

Like I said, if they can keep Zenit out - even if they stick 11 men in their own peanlty area for the entire match - they'll have earned it. Personally, I foresee another Middlesbrough.

It is not bitter comments as I said before Bayern have been shite, and were lucky to get so far and deserved to go out.

Barcelona are smaller than Bayern - look at what Bayern have won throughout history with less resources

Barcelona have the huge resources to attract any player in the world, Bayern do not, and never have - but still achieve more

Walter Smith is doing a fantastic job. He's getting the best results possible out of a poor set of players.

Does make me sad to see such negative tactics from the team that played the most exciting football in Europe when I was growing up. Legends like Laudrup, Gascoigne, Jorg 'The Hammer' Albertz, McCoist, Durrant. All just a distant memory now.

But again, just shows what an amazing job Smith/McCoist/Durrant are doing at the moment. None of this present Rangers XI would have come near a Rangers team even 10 years ago, and yet they never reached a European final. Not one of those '9 in a row' teams.
