Title: Gigs at the County Ground??
Post by: SWINRICH on Monday, April 21, 2008, 12:46:42
With the lack of a large music venue in Swindon. Did anybody ask at the fans forum if there would be any more concerts at the County Ground in future summers as would be a good revenue maker although may not be good for the pitch if we have rugby on there too.

No, nobody asked that I heard.

I have a vague recollection of this being raised before and that there would not be any more, but I may have dreamt it.

I don't think previous concerts actually made much money for the club at all.

It's rather difficult to be sure though given the vagueness regarding financial matters of the people running the club at the time. There also seemed to be some disagreement as to whether the Bryan Adams concert made significant amounts or not between those who took the cash on the night and those who put the cash up in the first place (who would therefore be owed a split of any profits made). So I don't think we're in a position to judge it really as the reported profits are not necessarily reliable.

Actually I think it's a damn good question. Given that we had two concerts, in two years running the first one must have given them the idea that the second one would make money. As Paul implies who it made money for is a totally different question, but it must have made some somewhere for someone.
I would suggest though that a high profile pre-season friendly would net a greater profit. What ever happened to the old tradition of tacking on a pre-season with as an eaxample Newcastle as part of the Tozer deal, or Everton & juke box

Didn't the previous concerts mess up our pitch anyway?  If thats the case then I'd rather they not bother - unless you mean using other parts of the ground that are smaller like the winners, lounges etc.

Apparently we're looking at Cardiff, Plymouth and Portsmouth for home pre season friendlies this year (I think the portsmouth one is the only one not finalised)

Yup, so either way we should be playing the FA Cup Winners. Assuming 'Arry can keep himself out of the nick

right, as i once shouted at sandy grey (and got banned for it) this is  actually something i know about. a sold out gig at the county ground with all the overheads and a proper promotion team you should be clearing near £100 grand profit, this will include a cut of the merchandise of the artist but this will not include food and drink served so you could easily clear another fifty grand with beverages.

they should fucking ask my company to do it. anyone fancy foo fighters or artic monkeys or anyone fucking half decent?

Make the offer Mex. I'm sure Fitton would look at a well written proposal.

There won't be one this summer, Fitton stressed at the forum that preparing the pitch was very important, and the most important part of preparation was letting it recover over the summer.

Mex, if your serious then I'd email Fitton or Wray and give them your details. If it's an earner for the club then they'd be silly not to consider it.

sorry chaps, we are already looking into doing stuff at the new falmer, its just too far and out of our area, however there are plenty of people in the west who can do this and im pretty sure Fitton would have looked into this, anyway to book a big act you need to be booking them 9-12 months in advance, so now is probably a good time to start looking for a company to get it together for next summer.

Richard,

Thanks for the e mail.

We have had little time to give thought to hosting concerts since taking over, in fact we are still trying to unravel the costs associated with the last couple of concerts both in terms of finances and damage to pitch.

However, I am sure in the future we will give it thought but ensure that we are better equipped to manage such an event in a professional manner.

Thank you for your interest.

Fair play to him for responding though and answering the question.

What with the ground share etc. on the cards, concerts etc. would be too much to consider right now.
