Many of you on here are living away from Swindon.When and if you lived here were you more or less interested in STFC?

Is it a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder?

huh? i cant say i was more interested in swindon when i lived there or when i lived her (southampton). although i go to less games now

I only ever lived in Swindon for three months when I was 5, we stayed at my grandparents, while the house my folks bought was being built.

So I guess I'm more interested in STFC since I've been living out of Swindon.

I went to my first game when I was about 14, back in the Hoddle days, at that time I lived out in a village near Devizes. I probably went to 30 games over 3 years.

Then after Uni I moved to Swindon and lived there for 5 years and only went to a handful of games, even though I always lived in near-ish to the stadium (Old Town).

Now I live miles away, in Tunbridge Wells, I probably go to a third of the games (home and away), and I suppose I’m more interested than I have ever been.

I've always been a fan of sorts, but living out here amongst loads of Chelsea and Arsenal fans makes you even prouder to be a supporter (a proper one, who actually watches their team) of a ‘lesser club’, even though I get constantly ribbed with the 'who are they?' jibes.

It's a bit strange really, that I’m now more interested than ever, whether it's my age, more disposable income or like you say just 'absent fondness' I don't know?

I will probably make more of an effort to see more games next year, regardless of our success.

I have definitely taken more interest in the club in recent years than I used when I was in the UK, but I can't say for sure whether it is because it acts as a link to "home" or just because there is much more information available now.

In my experience people in the ex-pat community like to be proud of where they have come from so you meet quite a lot of people who support "smaller" clubs and generally we get respect for that.

I think not living in Swindon does increase my love for the Town.I've never lived in Swindon so going and being there is magical really for me. Not living in Swindon reinforces your commitment , because you have to always justify why you support them ,especially living in didcot when you are surrounded by scummers and premiership glory hunters.

i agree with larwood, i only lived in the town for 2 years and didnt actually go when i lived there, whilst i was living in mexico my love really grew due to linkage to home and the overall feeling of missing blighty, now im back and in brighton i attend nearly half of our games and due to sites such as this one my interest has grown into a ridiculous and unhealthy obsession. :-))(

Diffcult question,

If I was still in Swindon then I would probably not have been on these forums because I would not have needed to keep tab's in this way. So maybe I pay more attention to them now than before. And being away from Swindon makes me wear my shirt wiv more pride (ESPECIALLY when the jokes are flying)

Yet of course i havent been to the County Ground for over 5 yrs now and have never seen the vast majority of players play.

In answer to your question........... I am undecided.

Every time I come back now I go to the match, there's no two ways about it!

However moving back in a month, I feel that I will bring this with me. As I am looking forward to meeting all the uber cool TEF boys for beers in the merlin  8)

How about going on an all-dayer for one of the pre-season friendlies in the glorious sunshine?

I lived in swindon till 16, and supported them all my life.  When I left to go to north london I guess i liked being the underdog in training wearing my town stuff etc.  It was like me against teh big clubs.   When I moved back a few years ago I guess ive gone more now but I think living away does make you realise its a smashing club

Tom - Its good grub in there but a bit pricey. I wasnt paying though so all is well. I had spicy chicken fillets in ciabattas with salsa & chips (posh chicken burgers)
