Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 11:22:48 Just had notification at work that the following cash points in Swindon have been done this week:
Asda - Barclays West Swindon Co-op - Eldene Asda Walmart - all 3 cash points Outlet Village - both the outside cash points If you've used them it'll be worth cancelling your card and getting a new one. Better to be safe than sorry. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Sippo on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 12:00:16 Is that with the lebanese loop?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Northern Red on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 12:06:39 Mmmmmm... Lesbian loop
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: stfctownenda on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 12:27:08 Not good
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Arriba on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 12:30:32 how the fuck did they do that in the co-op?
loads of people about and cameras there. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 12:55:25 I reckon that starting rumours about tampered cash points could be the new sending emails about pretend viruses.
Not that I'm saying your info isn't true Sam. It probably is. I can just see a sudden craze for such things. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Luci on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 13:01:44 It is 100% true Ben, already asked that question to those who would know based on where the email originated.

Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Power to people on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 13:13:59 Is that only this week....I use Asda periodically but probably not for about the last month or so ?
I always check cash points these days as isn't the trick that they put a false card reader in front of the original card reader and that skims the pin no as it is put in but if you take notice you can tell it is obviously sticking out that bit further ?? Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Sippo on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 13:51:48 I used two of said cash points during the week. Money has come out that I asked for but nothing more- touch wood.
I always check the machine and see if anything is dodgy. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Bogus Dave on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 15:20:16 How would they mess with the ones at asda walmart :?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Batch on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 15:25:27 Quote from: "STFC dave" How would they mess with the ones at asda walmart :? It's only a little device that sits just in front of where you put your card in. I guess wait until it is quiet and pretend to take some money out. I'd have though the risk of being caught on CCTV is relatively high. But I guess they just put it on, get it back a couple of days later and move on to the next town. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: axs on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 16:05:12 I got this email twice at work today.
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: axs on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 16:06:22 There's no-one standing watching the cctv, it'll only be checked when a crime is reported and by then it's too late.
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: lebowski on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 17:26:52 Quote from: "stfctownenda" The above information is accurate I received it same as Sam from a banks fraud team. Me too. They put a false front onto where you put the card in (normally quite easy to spot if you pay close enough attention), then when you put it in the device inside copies the information off of the magnetric stripe on the card. If they're really clever then they'll have a little camera watching you type yer PIN in too. You'll get your card back at the end and be none the wiser. Barclays told me the people who rigged them put cameras in the cash points at the west swindon one, said they're small and quite hard to see unless you pay close attention. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Sippo on Thursday, April 10, 2008, 20:26:04 Just do the basics and cover yourself when typing in your pin. These scams have been around for years..
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: ccw on Friday, April 11, 2008, 10:02:53 Does anyone actually know when these were done. I used the Asda Wallmart machine last Friday, so wondering whether it's worth cancelling my card.
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Tails on Friday, April 11, 2008, 11:46:05 One of my colleagues mates works as the fraud analyst at Nationwide who told her so I knew a few days ago, but apparently she's now been suspended or something?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Sippo on Friday, April 11, 2008, 12:48:55 Is this real or is it spam? There seems to be hell of a lot of e-mails and text messages going around...
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: my-velocity on Friday, April 11, 2008, 14:10:26 Yeah i'm wondering if it's spam or not, people are saying it's coming from Fraud Departments though so could be some truth in it. Anything been in the Adver today at all?

I always check the cashpoint before I use it.Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: BANGKOK RED on Friday, April 11, 2008, 14:31:47 I don't know either way of course but if it is spam then what could the spammer possibly gain from it???
Anyway, an English family (Dad, Mum and Son) where recently caught in Phuket for this. What a bunch of cunts, coming to a poor country and stealing from the locals. "Holiday in the sun" by the pistols springs to mind. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Sippo on Friday, April 11, 2008, 14:33:08 Scaremongering
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: my-velocity on Friday, April 11, 2008, 16:02:09 It does cause a bit of hastle for people who get worried about this sort of thing, i recon a good 10 or 20 people have cancelled their cards by now.
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Luci on Friday, April 11, 2008, 16:03:53 Not as much hassle as having your card cloned and spending months trying to claim it back from the bank.
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: land_of_bo on Friday, April 11, 2008, 17:01:34 Doesn't Swindon have Mondex anymore?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Barry Scott on Friday, April 11, 2008, 17:40:32 Quote from: "land_of_bo" Doesn't Swindon have Mondex anymore? Oh Mondex, how lovely. Surely a precursor to some kind of removal of cash from the masses, so our spending can be monitored and all our taxes paid. And yes we do. Mondex means you can't lose your money and stuff. :D Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Red81 on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:31:50 Quote from: "Sippo" Is this real or is it spam? And have seen in them use at the fraud department in wilts police, but I'm saying that it might be spam because e-mails with such information is hardly ever released. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:44:53 If anyone knows Marc (a.k.a. marcinthetownend) he got done for £2500.
:x Bastards! Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: flammableBen on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:49:03 Even if this one is true. I guarantee that rumours like this will start entering the world of rubbish "send this to loads of people" classic email spam.
I'd guess that the best deciding factor is how precise the email content is on dates. If it's vague stuff like "last week", then I'd guess it's bollocks. I reiterate that I'm not saying this one isn't true. I know fuck all about such things. But I'm pretty certain this will enter the email spam rounds. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:50:02 Is it just debit and credit cards, or will big standard cash cards be at risk too?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:50:07 You started it didn't you Ben?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Batch on Friday, April 11, 2008, 20:50:35 www.snopes.com is good for your average "is it spam/true" email.l
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: flammableBen on Friday, April 11, 2008, 21:00:22 Quote from: "Batch" www.snopes.com is good for your average "is it spam/true" email.l Snopes is an excellent website, but I'm not sure they bother with this sort of localised spam. Sorry. I'm starting to sound like someone who's just disagreeing with everybody for the sake of it. I didn't mean it that way. I was just making an observation like prediction. It's not unfair to say that the majority of people who work at a job in Swindon where they have email will have heard about this by now. Even if this one is true, then it's only a matter of time before someone thinks it's a great laugh to start email scare story email rumours. I guess what I'm getting is that you should never trust anything told to you in forwarded emails. Unless you have some seriously good first hand evidence that it's true. Better than "my mate told me aswell", you're mate probably got the same email. Quite agree, they won't. But you always get the "if you dial a 9 while talking to someone and put a foot in a bucket it'll cost you a squillion pounds on you phone bill" And you always get about 3 numpties forwarding it to you. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: Bushey Boy on Saturday, April 12, 2008, 07:31:05 Fair enough if someone got done, but my mrs said its a load of bull and as she sort of works in that I will take her word on this

I have also received emails with the same warning, along with a copy of the original from a Natasha Murphy, Special Investigations Department who apparently originated the e-mails!! Perhaps she is the one currently suspended from Nationwide, although to be fair there is no Nationwide header onit or anything similar!!http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/display.var.2191996.0.watch_out_for_the_skimmers.php Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: ron dodgers on Saturday, April 12, 2008, 10:09:08 did Natasha find sperm in her chicken madras?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: mrOG on Sunday, April 13, 2008, 08:54:49 Stop sniffing the bike saddle, Ron :D
I got that e-mail at work and there was a portion of disclaimer text at the end from BCS (British Computer Society) so it probably did not originate from that lass. Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: ron dodgers on Sunday, April 13, 2008, 09:03:22 fuck off oggie
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: pauld on Sunday, April 13, 2008, 09:08:01 Surely if someone in a position to know there had actually been skimming devices in these places had sent the email, they'd also be in a position to ensure said devices were removed? I can hardly see the banks/coppers/whoever would think "Hmm, we know there's skimmers in cash machines XYZ we'd better send round a warning email but leave the devices in place?" Or have I missed the point?
Title: WARNING - Card Skimming Post by: axs on Sunday, April 13, 2008, 10:16:01 I thought the point was probably more along the lines of letting people know it had been done so they could check balances andcancel cards if necessary.
