Title: Ghey Techhie Aids
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Saturday, March 29, 2008, 22:13:02
Not only his my PC been in and out of intensive care all day with teh Aids, more to the point "Blue screen" fully blown aids leading me to loose EVERYTHING that I had on my drive. (Including my FM 2008 game where I was 2nd in the championship wiv 3 games left.       )

But my ISP is also playing silly buggers which means that I have to use some shitty stone-age dial up connection for a while. Grrrrrrrr.

Another clappy-happy story from yours truly, how has your day been? Anybody else contracted ghey techhie aids?

You can get programs that can recover all of your files - even after re-formatting

I kinda gave myself a virus last week. I say i kinda, but what i mean is i semi-intentially got a virus and decided to spend a period of time manually removing it.

I was quite pleased with my work until my computer didn't work again and my user accounts got wiped, proving i failed to remove the virus. Either that or i got a bit enthusiastic with my system editing. Nice one me.

I've now moved onto XP SP2, which is slow as fuck within my "network". Oh, and Zonealarm prevents me from accessing my NAS. Any ideas how to get past this? I stuck in an IP range, but if ZA is turned on, windows still can't find my NAS. I've decided to stop being a cock with my PC, because it's been a very painful week and my PC annoys me now.

You need to change the network to the trusted zone and not the internet zone I think.

Zonealarm has given me all sorts of issues recently. I think it is ok now though.

Oh and if you haven't done so already - open the required ports in the advanced options

Well did you sort it? The suspense is killing me, I'm like a kid at christmas.

:D

No, i didn't. To be honest i haven't tried. I will do so now and get back to you in about 10 minutes Pieman. I actually wondered what ports to allow as well, because within my ZA logs it seems windows tries shit load?

Doesn't service pack 2 actively scan for network devices all the time, because i note the logs have entries all the time, whether trying to access the nas or not? It shows both UDP and TCP protocols, i assume, perhaps wrongly that it checks with UDP and performs data transfer over TCP? I'll also have a quick gander at the manual, which may have helped earlier.

And Suttonred, windows firewall is off, it has never been on and will never be on. :)

If i wasn't so good at removing more than i should from an install i'd find a way to remove the thing and stab it up. I don't have Security Centre though, which is sexual. Well, it's only sexual if you have a penchant for doing things to computers that they probably don't like.

Right, for some reason it's now working?  :?

I know i had a random check-box fiddle the other day, and i still have ips 1-10 within trusted zone.

Does changing the ip have any effect on zonealarm, because the nas ip tends to vary between 1 and 4 and 10 sometimes when i have it fixed, does sp2 deal with this differently than sp1?

It was previously using 192.168.1.1, because it was booted before my computer, but then i changed it to fixed at 10, as it used to be, for ease of ftp access, now though it's using 192.168.1.2 and it works fine through ZA?

I have a feeling i'll be back on this thread soon! :D Cheers Si.

Seems it only partially works. :(

When backing up it now says it cannot create a folder on the destination. I don't expect you to know what's causing that, but i now also use WPA2, where as before i was without protection. Could that be a reason that i can't back up to my nas correctly?

The syntax is fine and these files are things like jpegs, html, txt, basic stuff.

Code:
Failed to copy source: Cannot create folder: \\NAS\main\main\ (The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect)

Probably a stupid question, but how are you accessing the NAS? Are you just typing the IP into Explorer or do you have it mapped?

Have you tried mounting the NAS to a flux capacitor binding?

I actually asked if our server's flux capacitor was broken at work today, I don't think people got the joke.

I'm such a geek  :P

It isn't mapped (i don't think , although i think i'm going to do this) i just access through Syncback and/or My Network Places.

Would mapping it help?

Because i always ran without security and used SP1, i can't help but wonder whether it's WPA2 or SP2. IS this even possible?

The logs on my backup seem to imply that the connection to the NAS was dropped. I imagine repeatedly due to the strange errors i keep getting.

I'm really pissed off with myself, everything ran smoothly until i started being a cocky "i know what i'm doing" twat.

Don't play with viruses kids.

I reckon if you map it it'll solve the problem.

I think i love you Sam. I just mapped it and started the backup, already everything seems better. I can access the drive quickly and everything! :D

Just to appease my inquisitive nature, what purpose does that serve exactly? Also, my drive is constantly disconnected, reconnected, turned on, turned off, and ip changed, will this mean i have to remap everytime - not that it's problem -  or will my drive be forever mapped?

Thank you Sam and Si Pie, i was getting so fucked off. I owe you both one. Big time.

When you map it there's a tick box for 'reconnect at logon'. Just tick it and the drive will automatically be mapped every time Windows starts.

By mapping it, you've given the drive a physical address on the network so Windows will recognise it as a storage drive. Otherwise you're just remotely accessing it each time like you would a website for example.

IT FUCKING WORKS!!!!! :D :D :D :D

It's ran three profiles without errors already!

I am seriously very, very happy.

Thanks again.

Cool, you learn something new everyday.

Thanks again, my appreciation is unimaginable.

Anything i can do to return the favour, just let me know. I'm indebted to you both.

I'd already thought of that. It was fine after McFly put some garbage in it in 10 years time.

I have some good as new parts kicking around if either of you want them as payment.

I have a 100GB sata laptop drive and a 2.5" USB2 IDE enclosure? The drive is out of my lapper, prior to this forced upgrade and the enclosure is of no use because i mistakenly bought it for the old drive, without checking to see if it had sata connectors prior to marking it with a screw driver.

This thread has "i'm a bit of a tosspot" written through it like rock.  8)

Possibly interested in the HD drive. How much do you want for it?

In my first year at uni my room-mate backed up loads of his stuff on my computer whilst he blitzed his laptop. He made me delete it straight afterwards. This made me a bit curious so I got hold of one of those undeletey programs. I felt a bit bad so I sort of hinted at what I was going to do so he had a chance to go mental if he didn't want me to. Mental he went. So I promised not to do it. A promise I kept.

True Story. I still wonder what sketchy porn he had going down.

OK I will bring it along to the Merlin before the Vale game. It's quite easy to use, install it and then it has various options for finding files. Might take a while for the program to hunt through the drive so it's best to go and do something and keep checking up on it, but it's saved myself and a few mates in the past.

I will accept payment of a drink  :P
