Title: It is mildly irritating.
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Thursday, March 27, 2008, 17:16:07
When the (") and (@) mapping on my keyboard alternate for no apparent reason.

Not a major problem I know but does anybody know how to stop this from happening?

Mine does that....what I find more annoying is the keyboards at work don't, but  I'm used to compensating.

Start -> Control Panel -> Region & Languages

Click Languages tab

Press Details... button in the text services and input box.

Then look at the list and check you've got the right keyboard installed

If you've got more than one then pressing Control + Shift (I think) will switch between them.

I've got an American keyboard for my computer for some reason (think I stole it). But I'm used to the UK layout so I normally have that. Unfortunately this means that due to key mixes up I don't have a backslash key so I hit ctrl+shift to switch occasionally.

Thanks but that isn't what I was getting at.

What I mean is that on my keyboard the buttons generally work as mapped out on the keyboard which is fine an dandy, but ocassionally (") and (@) decide to swap places with each other whist typing for no apparent reason other than they feel like it.

I.E. "Shift" + "2" normally gives me (@), yet sometimes "Shift" + "2" gives me ("). And vice versa for the other button.

Not a major problemo but it is a tad irritating.

Try hitting ctrl+shift a couple of times to see if it forces it to switch.

I think that's the shortcut anyway. It's something like that to switch keyboard layouts in xp

"""""@@@@

There you go just made mine do it.

A long time ago I just accepted that computers do what the fuck they want to do and I have little or no control over them. :surrender:

I think I'm a 'TOG' :?

It probably is the american keyboard, if its xp and the american keyboard wasn't removed on initial install it can bugger about like that even if you change to uk

i find the hideous combination of a person who is unwilling to empty the bin, yet more than willing to over-fill it, mildly irritating.

correction; very irritating.

We used to wind our IT teachers up loads, simply take a ruler into the computer rooms, jimmy off the letters on the keyboard and click them randomly back into places in different positions.

That must have been irritating. It was amazing how people who could touch type suddenly went to pot.
