Title: FAO Sam or anyone else in the know about Weddings....
Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, March 25, 2008, 15:18:24
This is expensive malaky! Going to see Stanton House tonight about the wedding breakfast and evening do. Costs about 9k! All in though for 70to 100 guests.

Anyone know of any other good places to check out?

On the plus side, I'm gonna get the A-team van to take me to the wedding.  8)

Well ideally looking at the swindon area JFW. Not too far out. Was also considering the 4 pillars hotel at cotswold water park but I've heard bad reports about that.

Go abroad, your family will understand.

Have a party when you get back. Much more fun and cheaper.

She wants a church wedding though. With all the family present. I'd quite happily do it abroad...

£9,000

We've got 80 for the wedding breakfast at Blunsdon House and that comes to around £2,500 - £3,000.

Whatley Manor near Malmesbury is beautiful too

Id like my big WAG wedding at the Grove in Watford and my small boutique wedding at Cadbury House in Yatton...........................Ive got it all planned

Stanton House looked shit to me, also if you don't get married there they insist on you starting the wedding breakfast at 1430, way too early.  Wasn't impressed with the restaurant or function room.  Although the suite looks nice, lovely 4 poster, and a sofa that must have been christened a thousand times or more!

Try Cripps Barn near Cirencester I love the place but couldn't really handle the number of guests we wanted.

The Rectory in Crudwell's nice around £7K/£8k and that gives you exclusive use of hotel.  Again another bad point about Stanton as they'd be other non-wedding guests there.

We're going for another place away from Swindon (in Wiltshire) which offers exclusive use of grounds etc again for around 8 or 9 grand.

I totally take your point on the exclusive use thing Jan

My friend got married at Grittleton House last summer and it was lovely and the food was delicious - but there was three other wedding parties going on in different rooms - some people were even going into different parties as they heard the bar queues were smaller.

Im not sure I would want to feel like I was in a wedding farm

Exactamundo!!

I want the whole place to ourselves.  My (future) Mrs has told me since I posted my previous post that I've been a little over the top on my slagging off of Stanton, which is probably true.  It just wasn't for us.

Its the sort of thing whereby you're got by the short and curlies....its meant to be a one off and what does it say about you if you don't splash the cash.

My do was in some up-market Elizabethan manor house converted to hotel in darkest Hertfordshire....cost a fucking fortune.....long time ago now though , so I've no idea of how much I paid.

4 poster bed was  8)  mind.

I used Marsh Farm Hotel, and it was pretty damned good, but can't vouch for how it may or may not have changed since 2000!

Went to a wedding at Stanton and it's not worth that type of money.

Chiseldon House would be about right for the number you have and they give the whole place over I believe as it's not that big.

My brothers was in Cricklade Country Club, which was nice but they get a bit twitchy about kids I think.

I got married at Grittleton House, and got lucky as we were the only 'do' on that day and had the run of the whole house. Food is fantastic, good vfm, and they didn't charge for the hire of the place - just x per head for the number of guests. If you can get the place to yourself, I'd highly recommend it.

My marriage consisted of the misses and I giving each-other v signs before siging documents in a registry office. When we left we looked at each other and said "Are we married now then?"

That may sound bad but it was by choice. My wife is an Orphan now (Her mum died about 1 year before we got married, and her dad many years before that). And of course I have no family here myself. I have also been to  a few weddings of friends of mine where 99% of the guests did not even know the name of the Groom, there was one occassion when I was mistaken for the groom by some guests just because I was suited and booted.

For that very reason the better half and I decided that we would in no way we married for anybody else's benefit (I.E. A wedding party, free piss up), rather we would just get married because we wanted to. After all it's our marriage and nobody elses.

4 years later and we are still happily married.

I am probably not the best person to ask on the matter of big wedding do's.

Stanton house was ok. Bit small in my opinion especially as it costs hell of a lot. The evening reception room was tiny.

Gonna have to shop around...

That's what I thought Sippo, don't bother with Lydiard House either, too corporate looking.

I wanted to go to Friday Island nr Ciren, that looks a blast!!!

Think grittleton is too far out to be honest. Think we're gonna look at cricklade country club. Ideally needs to be a hotel or a hotel nearby.

I got married a few years ago at the Hilton Hotel (M4 J16) the only downside to it was they had no nice grounds for the photo's so we went to Lydiard Park for our photo's and then done family etc inside the hotel got some good photo's.

They was extremely helpful though and fall over themselves to cater to your needs and you get the exclusive use of all the function rooms.

We found that if you book all the bits and peices you require in advance it ends up slightly cheeper as you get it at today's price instead of next years prices for example, there is always shortcuts you can take to make your wedding that bit cheaper, like for example not using a company for you photo's but using someone that does it as a part time job, little things like that help with costs.

We did look at the Cricklade Country Club at the time but found it very expensive and not as accomodating as the Hilton.
