i can remember loads of headed goals conceded from this year already. they are the gayest goals to concede because is it a problem defensively or just well worked from the oppo?

akinfenwa, chambers, both carlisle goals, to name a few in the last few months. tis a problem certainly.

Huddersfields second would have been a header, if Paynter hadnt of got himself sent off....

I think Malpas knows that, he's been talking about adding height in the week. Just need to be a bit more organised on the marking as well I think.

its not a question of clean sheets though. its the fact that conceding alot from crossing will do no good for a defence's confidence.
it means conceding a corner late on (cobblers, carlisle etc) is going to cause nervousness throughout the side, invariably leading to an equaliser.

beating northampton and carlisle (i.e. without conceding those headers in the last 5 minutes) would see us 4 points better off. its as simple as that.

i've just realised how unclear and shabby that last post is, but the sentiments are true and hopefully understandable.

I think most of the players are in the 5' 10- 6' 1 mark with only really Corr and perhaps Paynter (how tall is Paynter?) getting up to 6' 4+ Perhaps a taller defender would be useful, but who they'd replace I don't know.

I don't disagree one little bit. What I don't like is the myth that we were far better under Sturrock, when we all know that we weren't!

i think we definitely lack some proper big bruisers, we're not a particularly short team but even losing someone like peacock means we lose a fair bit of height and aerial strength.

The fullbacks are relatively short too. Jack Smith got caught one on one at the back post v Carlisle and it was lucky that their striker put the header over. I assume this incident is the one Malpas was referring to.

Just a thought listening to the texts into Radio Swindon post match today, and it strikes me as odd that despite it only being a few months ago, everyones memories of Sturrocks reign in charge seem to be overwhelmingly positive.

Don't get me wrong, I thought Sturrock was a good manager and I'd prefer that he hadn't left the club when he did, but he wasn't exactly the second coming of Brian Clough.

Since MMs arrival we've only lost twice at home, once unluckily against Leeds and once deservedly against Walsall.

Before his arrival our away form was shit, having only won away once.

Sure we've drawn too many games, but it isn't as bleak as some people paint it.

Only 3 wins and 2 clean sheets, this from a side who was only 4 points off the play offs with games in hand. I'm not a Malpas basher but this is not impressive, especially seeing he got off to a flyer with an unbeaten run. Malpas needs to be his own man, get rid of those muppet assistants behind him, the players seem totally confused when they arrive on the pitch, you would think they hadn't discussed anything about the opposition or the system they are going to play during the build up to the match or in the changing room before they went on the field.

Not sure, I send a woman and a twenty pound note to do these type of errands.  :D

For me because its part of our history. It makes us what we are. Whats the point in bothering with STFC at all if the past isnt important? Besides these are the managers we know about. The ones we watched week in week out, so of course Malpas will be compared to them.

Its only a few years ago that Rushden & Diamonds were in a play off position just before New Years Eve they eneded up getting relegated. Lose the next four or take just a couple of draws and we will only be 3 to 5 points from relegation, simple mathematics really, we can't keep a clean sheet at the moment and dont look like scoring that many either, put that with our record over the last eight games which is the worse than any other side in this division, then Gillingham could well be a six pointer.

We were shocking today.

Looked pretty handy and dangerous for the first 10 minutes, then the defence fell apart and we started playing long balls up to Simon Cox. I lost count of the number of passes that went straight into touch, and on more than one occasion they would have set McNamee free down the wing. Brighton were okay but nothing special yet we barely troubled their keeper in the second half.

Oh, and the Whitdean is the crappest, coldest ground ever. FACT

Awful ground and Cold Coffee as well. We could of have 2-0 nil after 10 minutes. But after Forster scored his 1st we crumbled. Mcgovern was wasted in the middle and was awful. Easton needs to be restored into the middle of midfield. He is ineffectual on the right hand side.

They were good enough though to beat Walsall, Leyton Orient, Brighton and thats something we couldn't achieve, they also gave Notts Forest a 3-0 thrashing this season.

The last bit makes an interesting point. Fitton seems to be all about fan power at the moment, and it's getting to the point that he'll be under preassure to appoint a new manager for that reason. At some point he's going to have to stand up and tell the fans to wait; because, for one reason or another, our fans seem to lack patience.

I'm not really talking about Malpas, if Fitton decides to put someone new in then I'll back them too. As long as he does it at the right time, ie. at the end of the season / start of pre-season. I think the worst thing that town could ever do would be to sack Malpas halfway through next season. Has to be early May, or one year from there, or never because he turns out to be ace.

Personally I'd like to see Malpas given a proper season in charge. I don't see the point in employing him otherwise. Maybe there wasn't a point in employing him, apart from a lot of fans calling for an appointment (fan preassure again).

Malpas is a talented coach from what we read and we've seen some green shoots of progress so I'm not willing to do anything but reserve my judgement until he's had a proper crack of the whip. OK so his face might not quite fit for some at the moment but cast your minds back to the Macari days, take away the fact he was Lou Macari and you'd find he hardly got off to a flyer. We all know where he took us.

I don't think our new backers will accept mediocrity, but similarly I don't think they'll a) pander to moaning fans like too many chairmen have done of late and b) not allow Malpas every opportunity to show his worth. He's not impressed anybody yet - if the same is true 12 months down the line, then we start think of a change.

I think Dell is over egging this.  Odds of us going down from this position with 8 games to go are probably in the 500/1 to 1,000/1 range.  Of course it might happen...but it probably won't.

Malpas must be given a pre-season to show us what he is all about. It's as simple as that.

 Interesting, I've been going for 46 seasons, including this one.  By my calculations, defining mediocre as an outside top ten finish, and hence mid table, then in those years we've had 13 mediocre Div 3 seasons, along with 3 mediocre Div 4 seasons.

  9 decent Div 3 seasons backed up by 2 decent Div 4 seasons.....and 18 seasons at Div 2 with one in the Prem.

  So taking that as a rough guide, about a 1/2 our time has been spent at this level, much of it being mediocre, with as you say the odd decent season.

  What it tends to indicate, is that it is going to be very difficult for MM to turn us into a competitive outfit, even if he is still in the job.

Its 15 games now, so the 5 minutes argument is wearing a little thin, especially for fans who went to the northern games in those 15. Theres also a big hole in your argument because Sturrock wasnt in charge for many games either. How many did it take to see his methods? His way of thinking? Malpas has tried players in all sorts of positions. Does he really know what he wants? I dont think he does.

What are you talking about? Sturrock took over a strong side, in a weak division, and we crawled over the line. Meanwhile, Malpas has taken over an average side, in a strong division, and it looks like we're going to stay up.

I'm not a Malpas fan by any means but some people's take on both perspective and reality is proving quite strange.

I think Malpas is trying to get tactics based on the players we have, whereas Sturrock did it the other way round.

I'm hopeful that doing it the Malpas way now, will allow him to get the players in he needs in the summer and then push his tactically approach onto the players. Let's just hope the players we do get are more McNamee than Ashikodi.

I dont agree this is an average side. Its a good side for this division, just its an underperforming side.

I agree it was a weak division last season. But the team had lost its way before Sturrock came. We lost both home games under Williams and we had started to loose it before that under Wise. In the end we got 85 points. Which was only 4 points off the title. It was tight but we got the job done. Its been proven by quite a few teams that a winning mentality from div 3 can get you through div 2 quite comfortably if you can keep things together. Our first half of the season was ruined by off the field troubles. The players werent paid 3 weeks after the season started. My perspective is spot on.

How can Malpas do it the Malpas way? He's got no backroom staff. He's got no experience in signing players. Who is signing the players at the moment? I heard Cox and McNamee werent his signings.

Right, to start with Brigton is fucking shit and fuckin cold...and the view is shit also when we play them next season I will not be going !!

I thought we played ok for about the 1st half an hour, and then we seemed to lose our way, they worked out that if they close up down at every opportunity we do not have a fuckung clue on how to deal with it and end up losing shape and ideas.

This system Malpas insists on playing I really don't think that the players get it that well, yep ok Easton scored again but he is better in the middle, the team we have at the moment is best suited to a 4-4-2 with wide players supplying the crosses.

The midfield seemed to go missing badly at times and I think JP stayed in the changing room (or should that be portakabin) at half time.

I have said previously I am not in the group of Maplas out but the guy does baffle me, when the players need encouagment he is standing in the back of the dug out....oh and Sofi playing on the right..do me a favour, and Mcnamee in the centre....nuff said.

If we carry on the way we are playing we will get dragged down towards the relegation places but I beleive we have enough points to stay out of it and there are teams that are worse than us luckily.

This team is good enough to finish above mid table, anything else surely has to be viewed as a not so good season.
