right, i am after a bit of info if any of you can help me.after our summer holiday i plan on getting a dog.mrs aint 100% happy but me and the kids will win in the end.
i think i want to go down the rescue centre route.
what i need to know is how to go about it really.should i visit such places to get an idea of how they work, and to introduce myself and the family? i have heard of the one in burford, but are there any others nearby.any recomendations from you guys?
i'm going to do this properly and dont take it lightly. so i want to set the wheels in motion now really,and plan ahead.
any advice would be great!

I think they'll want to come around and have a look at your house, and interview you and your family, although im not 100% so it would be good to get the ball rolling now so you have time to fit it in.

Last time we did it you could just go and get one!

Certainly take all the family to meet the dogs that catch your eye, ask plenty of questions about it's background and temperament, and it's behaviour.

Good call on getting a rescue dog. It really is very rewarding.

Best place to pick up a dog round here is Walkabouts, most have dodgy backgrounds, and will be grateful for new surroundings.



on a serious point fair play Arriba, I'm sure your Mrs will eventually come round to the idea.

They will want to do a home check,basicly they want to know what sort of space you have ,whether you garden is enclosed,how long the dog will be left alone daily and the ages of your children.

Blue Cross centre in Burford is the one you are talking about.  Drove vetenary near the park and ride on the way to wroughton is the kennels for strays that have been picked up and not claimed around Swindon, and they then send them onto local kennels around the Swindon area so that would be the best place for first contact in the Swindon area I would have thought.

Oh, and you won't be able to just turn up and walk away with one, they now vet you, your family and your home to make sure you are a suitable adopter and that your home is suitable for the dog.

Blue Cross is well worth a visit though, you will see probably 25-30 dogs in one place there and get a good idea as to what you are after.  Only takes 30 mins to get there from Swindon.

I think there are a few people on here would could tell you a thing or two about dogs....

to be honest, if a place didn't want to know about me and my family,our home etc i'd be a little worried about their operation myself.
people that will just let them go anywhere are a worry themselves.the idiot at wooton bassett who calls his place a haven is an example of this.

Bath cats and dogs home is pretty good. Loads of pooches up there and you can take them for walks and stuff as well.

They are ran by volunteers so you make a donation when you adopt - but they are well run and worth checking out.

Have you considered a retired greyhound?  Wonderful pets, don't need a lot of walking - once a day is enough.  Oh, and a comfortable settee is handy for them as well!!
