Title: If I lived.......
Post by: Gazza's Fat Mate on Monday, March 17, 2008, 12:20:49
If I lived next to a cannal and wanted to do some fishing would it be worth putting in a laod of baby fish into the cannal directly outside my house thus stocking up the local population.

Would the fish stay around or would they simply swim off?

they wouldn't stay put as alot of fish stay in skools so would move about in those groups.not really your place to deal with the fish population anyway.get in touch with the local fishing clubs as they will have more idea what is in there

It depends on what fish you are putting in.

where the fuck would you get baby fish from anyway?

they get by locks when they are opened I think, not sure how tbh but they do.

dont put Gold Fish in,they carry diseases that kill proper fish.

Baby fish from fish farm. £1 each or something.

Was think carp and other sort of british fish.

Just a random thought I had this morning on the train. I always wondered how the fish got throurgh the locks etc and who the fuck put fish in the cannals anyway. I know some cannals are connected to rivers but still......

the canals would have been stocked many years ago.then over time nature takes its course with the generations of fish reproducing.paying out of your own pocket to try to increase the fish population is a bit daft imo

when you open the sluice gates the fish get sucked out into tributaries and through locks, unless you add about 10,000 fish then it really won't make any difference. the population will spread out in shoals to match food supply, they won't always stay in one place.

I remember reading about somebody who had one of those as a pet.

I actually turned into an adult which is a very very rare thing to happen.

I think they have the nick-name the peter pan salamander or something like that.

The Axolotl (or ajolote) (Ambystoma mexicanum) is the best-known of the Mexican neotenic mole salamanders belonging to the Tiger Salamander complex. Larvae of this species fail to undergo metamorphosis, so the adults remain aquatic and gilled

There was a story about one when changed into full adult form, I can't seem to find it though.

Under some circumstances however, the axolotl can undergo metamorphosis into a terrestrial from, although this can be stressful on the animal, and you would need a new set of knowledge and equipment regarding the care of a salamander. Axolotls can be forced to change into their adult state if induced to change, but it is not recommended

Not quite the story that I was looking for, but it is still very rare that they change into full adult form....

So there......

I'd say you do enough fishing as it is.

Would it not be possible to encourage the fish to stay there.

For example, in the sea they do things like scuttle ships or drop breeze blocks to make artificial reefs.

I know that there is quite a difference between the sea and a canal but perhaps the same principal could be applied. Maybe if the fish always had plenty of food there, for example, then they may choose to stick around.

Which brings us around nicely, to one of the great TEF matters of import....viz, did you ever get that fish tank?

Could you keep a couple in a tank/pond and then take them for walks (or swims) in the canal? You could tie string round them or something.

Do NOT get any Neon Tetras, they are lovely to look at, but they are Khamikase (Sp) fuckers and will without a doubt commit suicide by throwing themselves into the pump/filter. I speak from experience.

that's exactly what my cardinal tetras did, every single one. i need to get an external filter so they have no way of getting in to it.

Of course, the axolotyl is also known as the Mexican Walking Fish, despite not being a fish.

You could just tie a piece of string around axs and take him for a walk.

Or go for the Captain Beefheart.....Trout Mask Replica look.
