Orient 2 - 1 Swindon
Shot shy Swindon waste numberous good opportunities before Orient break and score against the run of play. Ifil then slams in an own goal, before Easton grabs a late consolation...

but i've never got a Swindon score prediction right in 4 years!

It will be interesting to see what formation Malpas goes with, obviously previously he has prefered the 4-1-3-2 but with no Peacock or Paynter he will probably have to revert back to 442.

I think the main taking point is whether he continues with Jack Smith at RB and put's Comminges to the left again, Smith does not deserve to be dropped as he played well, but if Malpas decides to put Vincent straight back in after injury then unformtunely Smith will be on the bench again.

I think he will use Sturrock up front as well with Cox.

I think we all know the season is going to fade out into a mid table nothingness finish.....

I feel, if Sturrock was still in charge people would be looking forward to next season because with Sturrocks record you could almost bet your house on a top 6 finish.

Malpas doesnt have that track record so everyone like Bart is expecting the worst.

Ummmmm........

A stable financially secure club with a fairly comfortable mid table finish.....  I'll take it thanks.

I'd expected a dour scrap against relegation with us avoiding the drop in the last couple of weeks of the season AT BEST. To be honest although I tried to avoid banging on about it at the time I was fairly sure that we'd go tit's up altogether last year.

Just got back from the game

Orient were shite with a capital SHITE. We were a bit better them but really didn't create too many great chances...Coxy missing the best of the lot. It was a sitter. People moaned about Zaaboub coming on, but it was the only sensible option. People moaned at Sturrock, but he worked his arse off.

When we got the ball out wide and whipped crosses in (especially from McNamee) we looked really dangerous, but for some reason Malpas changed it to 4-3-3 and we lost the width and therefore all effectiveness. I've not criticised Malpas at all until now but taking McNamee off was the strangest decision I've seen in a long time.
Their penalty was a definite penalty, and some slack defending over a 10 minute period is what cost us tonight. No complaints about the referee, no complaints about effort/passion/desire, just wasn't our night.

What I don't get is why malpas doesn't just press the tactics button, right click on our wingers heads and drag out some lines to make them run up and down more, also ticking the cross ball lots box. Maybe selecting the closing down button on some of our midfielders.

Just got back....

We played OK first half - or in fact Orient were very poor in the first half. Looked like a bit of a flukey goal we scored, but couldnt clearly see it. To be honest we held it together well for the rest of the half.

I imagine that at half time Malpas said in a very dreary voice "Keep it going lads" - as opposed to some real motivational talking from Orient, as they came out well up for it and we looked a mess. Definate penalty for them. Also about a minute later it looked like Ifil handballed it off the line, but i think the ref bottled giving them another penalty in such a short space of time. Their second goal came soon after, and our defence looked very shabby.

I never thought we genuinely looked like getting back in the game - but Cox's miss was unbelievable! On his own in the 6 yard box and managed to somehow scuff it over! He looked proper gutted at full time though.

McNamee looked fairly dangerous - he wasnt skipping past players so freely as he did against Huddersfield, but the speed of his feet is brilliant - one little piece of skill he did in front of us away fans was quality! Which is why i have no idea why Malpas took him off - he did look like he was one of the few who could have provided something extra tonight.

Other irritants - traffic in London was typically bad - and although it was nice driving past Wembley, i thought that they lit up the arch every night?

The fickleness of the fans yet again - after last week, when Brez was a bit indecisive this week, some bloke starts shouting "Brez your shit, get off the pitch" and going mental. No doubt bloke was from the same "Smith Slagging" group.

Also the man who went mental at the us for singing "we're the right side/left side over here....". He turned around and started shouting "SHUT UP, YOUR SINGING AN OXFORD SONG" and getting really wound up about it!!! It was quite entertaining!

All in all, another ground visited i guess.

Good first half, not so good second half... seems to be a recurring theme these days.

Zaaboub on the right wing didn't work, he is so one-footed every time he got in a position to cross he had to check back and try to get it on his left. I thought Zaaboub at left back with Comminges on the right wing would have made more sense, Zaaboub looked pretty handy playing left back earlier in the season.

Taking McNamee off really was an odd decision, he had been our best outlet and attacking option, Malpas took a fair bit of abuse for it. As for Cox's miss, probably the less said the better... as reeves said you'd expect him to put that away every time, but no point dwelling on it.

And finally, "We can see you washing up!", fantastic!

Brez did actually make a few good saves and our shoddy defending didn;t help.  I thought he did well considering how bloody windy it was.

Gutted for Coxy and his miss, could tell hes lacking confidence.  Full time he pretty much had to be consoled by one or two of his team mates.

MacNamee showed no signs of tiring at all so why he came off is beyond me.  His bit of showboating in front of us though was quality.

Leyton Orient are possibly one of the worst bunch of fans I've seen.  Crap home support.

I'm still utterly amazed at the people in front of us screaming (yet again) abuse at Blair Sturrock.  Worked his socks off again.

I can't really be bothered to say much more about the game as its pretty much been summed up in the above posts however discipline is an issue and needs to be resolved during the summer.

Game aside, good day out, some great pubs and a good laugh.

Actually Nev Brez did make a couple of good saves, his decision making was very good and all in all looked better than Smith has in recent weeks.

As for the match itself well an Orient fan I was talking to in their club shop after the game said "I can't believe we got away with that".  Which summed it up, R4E's summary was spot on they dominated in the 10 mins at the start of the 2nd half, apart from that we were on top for most of the game.

Malpas taking off our most dangerous player was crazy, not a subsititution that'll endear him to the fans.

As for Coxy's miss.......   probably the worst miss of the season, and he knew it.  I wonder what the fans reaction would have been if Blair had missed the chance.

A couple of observations from last night.

As others have said, when we went wide we were dangerous...but too often we playing a narrow game down the middle and it wasn't effective.  If Malpas can't see that, he should come and sit up in the stands with the rest of us for 15 or 20 minutes.  It's blindingly obvious.  The periods when we were trying to push down the middle coincided with those that Orient's midfield had most of the possession.  I have to confess some bias, because I've always preferred seeing us play wide (with a Mark Walters, Nicky Summerbee or even Beauchamp on the wing) - but that's how I see it.

Secondly, Blair Sturrock and Anthony McNamee - take a bow.  These two worked their b*llocks off for STFC last night.  I might be getting a bit middle aged now, but I can forgive a poor result if I see the players sweating for the cause like that.  McNamee's trickery in front of our stand at the end of the second half was superb - and when he was finally dispossessed, his reaction was even better.  He didn't even try to acknowledge the cheers from our stand...he just threw his hands up in disgust and got stuck right back in.  How many times have we complained about players not being arsed?  Well done, lads.  Keep it up.

And finally, Orient's ground.  New ground for me, and now vying with Loftus Road for position of my favourite London ground.  I imagine it would be even better if it had a few more fans in it (and if the home fans decided to make some noise).  Expect we'll be back there next year, which is fine by me.

1. Leyton Orient are possibly one of the worst bunch of fans I've seen.  Crap home support.

2. I'm still utterly amazed at the people in front of us screaming (yet again) abuse at Blair Sturrock.  Worked his socks off again.

3. Game aside.

1.  LO fans make Wycombe fans seem like the most intimidating fans in the world.

2.  That wasn't us!!

3. I said that on the way back to the car, even though we lost it really wasn't a bad performance.

I saw things a bit differently then.

First half no complaints, though we were very solid and deserved to go in ahead. Now this is going to be a bit ranty but when you hot-foot it from work just to get there in time and then have to be up at 6am I feel I have a right to go off on one after our fucking pathetic second half. What the hell happened?

So many of our players were just plain stupid! Brez, he's got to come and get that ball on the second goal. His decision making went to pot, there was that one were he went to slide tackle their striker and fucking lost it, off his line when he should stay. Then 10 mins later he comes racing out of his area then changes his mind halfway and has to backtrack?! Wtf?!

McGovern gives us FUCK ALL in the centre. Comminges, not his fault being on the left but an absolute disaster defensively, still decent going forward. Easton had his worst game for ages.

The stupidity thing... at the end when Aljofree tried a right foot volley when we were in a good position?! Just fucking put it back inb the box, you're a left footed centre half, what the fuck was he thinking? I know all the bloke can do is hump it into the stands so perhaps we should've seen it coming.

I stick up for Blair but he was comically shit at times, that one were he chased a ball all the way to the touchline in front of our bit, got there and fell over, Jesus wept. Cox, well sorry but for fucks sake I could have fucking scored that with my backside.

What the hell happened at half time because we came out after a good effort in the first 45 and then we were a shambles after the break. What malpas was doing taking McNamee off - he deserved the stick he got for that. JPM, Sofi and McNamee in the same midfield doesn't work, far too fucking weak,  although I concede his hand was forced a bit with no Peacock or Pook.

Sorry to have such a whinge, and there were positives (the first half generally, Jack Smith excellent at times and got forward well, McNamee looks a skilfull kid, work ethic was sound - just lacking in quality or basic intelligence at times). Didn't have feel pissed off on the way home though.

Highlight of the evening was easy. We can see you washing up!

Some Orient Fans Views

Quote
Chuffed with the win!! But still not overly impressed with the performance.

We played at a high tempo for only 15 minutes after half time and scored twice in that period.

If we would've played a half-decent side, we definitely wouldn't have won tonight. Swindon were below average at best.

I guarantee Ling will sign Simon 'FFS' Cox in the summer. He would fit in perfectly.

Swindon mamager Maurice Malpas' decision to substitute Anthony McNamee in the second half was amongst the strangest I've ever seen. I thought he was by far their best player and only threat to our lead.

Quote
Was also good to hear the opposition fans up in arms 'you dont know what you're doing' at the McNamee sub

Quote
Thought there number 5 was excellent.  I'd love us to have him, basically everytime i've seen him be it in person or on tv he's had a good game

Quote
We need to think long and hard about how we consistently start games so badly. OK, we got away with it against a Swindon side who are poor. We won't against most teams.

About Craig Easton - I thought he looked terrible tonight.

An absolute shadow of the player he was at the Orient.

I'd love to see that again -must be one of the worst misses ever seen at Brisbane Road.

Agree with McGovern in the middle - he was poor and Aljofree's "effort" at the end - I hate it when centre halves do that kind of thing, just give it to someone who can do something with the ball.

Disagree with Blair, thought he played well, and I could careless if he fell over once or twice in trying to do the right thing, if Peacock does that he's applauded for it.

Their second goal for me was the fault of the centre half who seemed to have lead boots on for a while.

I think you are overstating the negatives DMR.

We had a bad 1st 5 minutes in the first half, a bad first 10 minutes in the second half. Other than that we were comfortable without threatening too much.

What does concern me is the lack of chances created. Again.

Even so we deserved the draw. Cox missed the easiest chance he will ever get, he puts that in, we draw. Boy does he need a goal to get the confidence up.

Did you win your pool game Dave? Yesterday wasnt that messy, game was ok but left very early due to boredom, not sure why we left but guess you do things under the influence!

We are a mid table team and need to accept this.

Glad to get another ground ticked off, old ground with a facelift and with housing on corners was a good idea

Also the NHS clinic located in the main stand was a good idea, another rent revenue generator.  Impressive little set up, the stand we were in could do with a makeover and that'd be Brisbane Road completed.

Those apartments with the balconies were quality!

Whenever I go to wtch us play I am always filled with optimism and then when I come out I always convince myself that I will never go again. Last night was no different. First half was comfortable (although WE still couldn't score), Orient and Orient's fans were pathetic. Second half Orient just wanted it more, did what they had to and that was that. Cox Brez Malpas Comminges sorry boys not good enough.

Best part of the night was the bloke drinking tins of Red Stripe in front of us in the stand and some of our fans' stupid songs :)

i thought Cox lead the line well, much better than Sturrock. i know he gets hammered on here but he doesn't get in goalscoring positions, or hold the ball up. he's simply not good enough. bar the miss that cox was good last night.

Other than the 10/15-minute spell I thought we did ok. A shame we gave it away so easily because the game was for the taking. Orient were poor I thought.

Thought Jack Smith played well, and JP.

We didn't do a lot wrong last night, just buckled when it mattered.

What concerned me was the instruction from the sidelines. Malpas offerde little when we were up against it while Byrne reminded me of King the way the whisteled, ranted and raved. He hammers players, never encourages.

lets face it, a number of factors contributed to us losing last night. The penalty gave them impetus - I think without it Orient would have had aneough to break us down. also, had cox scored - some go in, some don't - we would have taken a 2-2 draw.

The fact of the matter is we will win some, we'll lose some, especially given we have players out. Last night was a shame, especially because they looked so poor. But other than the spell that saw us go behind I thought we looked ok given the team we had out.

I agreed with ashikodi coming on, but not at McNamee's expense. Maybe instead of sturrock, or easton?

I have thought this too. I guess nobody knows the extent of his asthma though. How risky is it to play him for the full game if he is not strong enough? I am no doctor so only guessing.

If Roberts was injured with a niggle that could get worse I don't see why he didn't start Zaaboub in the first place. Ho hum.

We're putting all our eggs into one basket by playing down the wings all the time. Teams have realised this and now take action. It takes someone like McNamee and a bit of brilliance to get anything out of games.

Remember when Sturrock first took over and it took us ages to get the proper wing plays after playing quite narrow football before this. In fact I seem to remember the phrase "this is Wise's team" being used a lot. The same applies here imo.

However, I've no doubt Sturrock is a far better manager and that's why people are pissed off. Maybe they should aim their frustrations at Fitton?

I think Sturrock did get more out of the current bunch - mainly because those players suited his tactics more. I get the impression Malpas would prefer more balance. We will see what happens I guess.

Although I didn't go, it sounds like this one decision to sub a player didn't cost us the game alone.

I'm not saying they were a better team on the night, I;m saying over the course of the season they have proved themselves our better.  Therefore it's entirely possible for such a team to come out after half time break and really manage to exert some pressure and control over an ever so slightly lesser team made a little comfortable by a lead.  It doesn;t have to have anything to do with our own performance.

Sorry Si you miss my point.  McNamee was subbed which though strange, is fine.  What surprised even more than him taking Arnold off, was the fact that he did nothing to cover the position McNamee was playing.  There was just a huge space for Comminges to cover.  The midfield didn't cover it, one of the three front men didn't either.

I disagree. He's our one really potent striker and if he misses from two yards he's not doing his job, that miss could (and only 'could' admittedly) have cost us a point. I rate him loads but at the moment he looks like he could do with a midweek reserve match to get him on the way again.
