I got in the TE after it had kicked off that day.....no I didn't save it as a trophy, but rooting around in the attic I found a bag of stuff.  Thought I'd try it out to see how it looked on here.....its a big bag.

I love the part wher a local man had his nose broken by a Tittenham supporter.

Iv got the program from the replay of that tie back at WHL. 48,000 there to watch Spurs V Swindon 4th round!  :shock: (think thats right).

Was the upper tier of the Shrivvy road closed after that game? When was the last game it was open to the public?

And filed down coins, nasty. Not quite as bad as dart throwing though.

  A lot of STFC didn't get in that night.....I recall going with a mate and his grandad who was into his early 80's...it was obvious it was going to be a big crowd, so a bit of rapid walking was necessary.  This was a man who still had the same enthusiasm as when he watched Harry Morris..I was impressed.

 

 Don't know the answer to that.....but it was certainly still used for some years after that....I'd guess the Bradford fire caused the final closure....but need to check

Taken a while but the upper tier of the old Shrivenham Road stand was closed in 85, after the passing of the Safety at Sports Grounds Act

Took us a while to get a safety certificate after Heysel, if I recall.

Quallity stuff....I only got as far as Tamworth.

Me and Mrs Taylor had decided to make a short break out of it.  We had trvalled up from London during the day and had checked into our hotel where I picked up a local paper (the very same BEN I imagine) which said the pitch had been covered and the game was almost certain to go ahead.  We made our way to the ground as a lot of other people were doing.  There was loads of Old Bill on horeseback and everything.  It all looked good until we got to where I thought Burnden Park should be but there were no floodlights in evidence.  It was at this point we were given the joyous news by a member of the afore mentioned Old Bill that the game was off.

So what so you do on a wet Wednesday night in Bolton? (Once you have finished jumping up and down with your head between your knees a la Basil Fawlty becuase I knew I wouldn't be able to make the rearranged game).  We went to Blackburn v Wimbledon, ironically only about 10 miles down the road but they somehow managed to get the game played.  We were with about 20 other Swindon fans and the same number of Dons fans and some one came up with:

"We are red, we are white,
we're not really here tonight,
la la la la la la la la la la!"

Which I thought was quite good even in my semi-suicidal state!  Any way Blackburn won the game 2-1 and went on to win the League so at least I could say I saw that season's Champions in action.  Some consolation!

That's the first I've ever heard about fans going on the rampage but if I'd known about it I would have joined in I can assure you!

Swindon held their own in that trotters bar apparently. I had never realised there was this sub plot of forged tickets in the semi final postponement. It was a volatile ground and the police were obviously shitting it. Makes you wonder.

Although there may have been carnage it looks to me that the damage would have run into tens rather than thousands judging by the state of that boozer. Look at it, proper northern monkey 50's council estate social club, get ur bitter, 65p a pint.

Burnden Park was old school.

There's a great shot of Burnden Park somewhere with a vast open terrace and a steam loco parked at the top presumably watching a bit of play.......I think this was the terrace that had a crush just post war and killed a good number.......33 apparently.

  An inquiry recommended improved turnstiles, most were newly demobbed servicemen , who were over keen to get in for a big match.

  I've  a copy of Lowry's Burnden Park.......but I reckon that would be better.

 There's a place in Ambleside, which specialisises in football pics, but it also specialises in high prices.

That would have been well wierd, especially if you didn't realize it was coming along and then you heard the whistle etc, would make you jump!

Although I suppose you'd have to be pretty deaf not to hear it in the first place.
