Title: Broadband
Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, February 10, 2008, 20:43:39
Ok boys and girls I need some new broadband because plusnet is being fucking shit and slow almost as bad as dial up at times.

What can I get in the grange park area? Needs to be cheap and not have a download limit. Don't want cable and I don't have sky. Anyone got any recommendations?

I've had BT before and must admit I don't think I had any problems, but moved as it was cheaper elsewhere. I'm not sure I can afford the £24.99 that BT are asking for.

Freedom2surf were my favourite until they got expensive.

BT all the way, bit of a traditionalist with things like that, its sad but I get a bit of pride using BT Royal mail etc....

Never had a problem

I have no loyalty or pride for companies, except for STFC.

I see a lot of the ISPs offering decent packages don't do it in my area. It's rather annoying

Isn't there a six-month introductory deal with BT at the moment?  Probably have to sign a year's contract but overall it comes out at about £16 a month - I had a bit of an argument with them over why I didn't qualify for a reduction.  I would have to cancel with them, go somewhere else for six months and then come back.  Seems like too much hassle!

Well o2 are doing a very cheap broadband package so I am tempted by that. Otherwise I might go with someone like NewNet. Has anyone heard much about NewNet?

I joined talktalk about 6 months ago, as BT were pricey and had limits.

Talktalk give me 8mb unlimited (although my area only supports 2mb :( ) and includes free landline calls or some bollocks (i don't use the phone so who cares?), but it's been faultless. It costs £20 total, that includes line rental, unlike most services who specify you still need to pay BT line rental, so although they don't supply a router (i have my own) i recommend them.

If you have Sky TV you can get Sky 16meg for a tenner or 8meg for a fiver!  Or 2meg for free!

Hmm you obviously ignored the bit where I said I don't have sky  :D

I think I'm going to go with NewNet or back to Freedom2Surf. I don't fancy the costs combined with long contracts of other ISPs

What kind of problems are you getting with Plus then Si?

I've been with them for a year now and I've had no problems at all.

I have TalkTalk and would not reccomend them, their Customer Services is shit, and the broadband seems at times to be up and down like a hoars drawers, last couple of months it has been fine, but previously to that it was extremely poor, forever not being able to get connected for hours I put a complaint in and they have never bothered to respond to it either, if I could be bothered I would change providers, but it is too much like hard work !!

I have been with most suppliers over the last few years and have ended up back with BT as they offer the best service for a pretty affordable rate, with the introduction offer its great.

BUT

BEWARE

Read all the small print on FUP (Fair Usage Policy) they have you by the short and curlies if you use do a lot of downloading.

AOL unlimited is totally shit and limits you to under 30gb per month.

Sky broadband is around 10gb per month

BT is nearer 80gb per month

There is no such thing as totally unlimited broadband, bear this in mind when siging up for super fast speed broadband as after a few days you will be well over your limit for downloading for the month and then you will have your broadband capped at peak times which will limit your downloading to about 100kbp.

I use vast amounts of downloads and AOL had me capped for 6 months without even telling me, I presumed the connection was just shit.

BT on the other hand have not capped me...as yet...and I regularly download in excess of 100gb per month.

I've used Virgin for the past four years, no problems. £18/Unlimited/upto 8 mmmbops.

But then again I've got a Dell laptop, so I know nothing.  8)

Been with NTL/Virgin for 6 years and apart from them cutting me off when they were supposed to take away the TV service, I have not had any problems.

Speeds are good enough to cope with larger downloads and swift browsing, even over wireless.

Costs the same as BT, but you don't have the lottery of how close to the Exchange you are (which seems to be the norm for most of the ADSL lines).

But if you don't want cable, then ignore this post.

i was with BT for 2 years but couldn't justify why i paid £25pm for 8meg when i could get double that for £10pm with Sky.

both have been brilliant and customer service is really good.
never once had a problem with BT but couldn't justify paying the money

The FUP has fucked me over on plus, ever since we have got more than one computer in my house.

I estimate I use only 10GB a month, so not a massive amount. I know I'm on the cheaper option on plus but I don't want to upgrade because the quality of the connection and the speed of it has been getting progressively worse.

I think NewNet might be the option. They don't seem to mind peer to peer as much from what I've read, whereas many ISPs throttle it. The package I looked at has a 20GB usage a month so I think that will be plenty. Only reason I said unlimited is because some ISPs seem to do unlimited or something silly like 3-8gb, which I will go over.
