Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: jim on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 17:19:09 I have a Cairn Terrier who is now 12 and a half. She has been brilliant (and still is), but the kids want another one.
What should I get? My daughter wants one thats as ugly as possible so is looking at Pugs (look at www.cleanthescreen.com/index2.html). I have found some puggles (pug and beagle cross) that look low maintenance and cute as pups but may be ugly adults (well it happened to me!) http://lycos.oodle.co.uk/view/747213133 Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: Arriba on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 17:25:45 i'm probably getting one after my summer holiday.
son wants a staffie but i'm thinking collie or cocker spaniel. Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: Bushey Boy on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 17:40:30 The puggles look good, and perhaps the age of the other dog (getting towards the end of his life) when it happens having another one around may help.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and about 3 weeks left! Turns out she has an allergy to sweetcorn and she had been munching on the cobs at a barbecue - so all she had was belly ache. The thought of her going made us feel disloyal to have considered getting another one, so we put it aside for while. But recently, since Santini got himself a dog, we have reconsidered. If a dog can make that miserable old git smile, there's hope for us all. Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: ronnie21 on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 17:58:49 Be a bit wary of a cocker with kiddies about!! We had one when the kids were growing up (also had an old english sheepdog) and it was a right snappy thing. Took it to the vets who informed us that there was nothing that could be done but some strains of golden cocker were prone to that, inbreeding and things like that. The old english are really good with kids etc., we are on our fourth one now but they do take a bit of looking after!!
Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: Barry Scott on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 18:00:22 Go to a dog home and get a mistreated dog. Losing a dog sucks, but when you're ready to get another, i've always found getting a dog in a sorry state of affairs very rewarding.
Our last 2 dogs were both heavily abused and they became the most adorable dogs. I found it nice to know you're giving them another shot at life especially when sometimes they're so timid and afraid, then after a little while they realise they can trust you and become inseparable from you. Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: ronnie21 on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 20:32:41 Good shout BS, or the greyhound trust who always have dogs to rehome. They make wonderful pets.

Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: Sussex on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 20:56:12 Birdy and I have been looking on the RSPCA website for a dog when we move in to the house. Bit unsure though, as it seems a bit unfair leaving it home alone all day when we're at work.
Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: yeo on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 21:01:10 I see what you mean but a loving Mum and Dad  :D for 12 hours a day and weekends has got to beat being sat in a kennels 24/7.
Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: DMR on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 21:18:34 Out of interest Jim, how long until your daughter is likely to move out (assuming she still lives at home)... I ask because I know my old man has told my 2 younger brothers we won't be getting another family dog because by the time Ella (she's 7) passes away realistically they'll have moved out and as much he likes dogs he doesn't want one for just him and his missus, which is probably fair enough.
That said, I've grown up around dogs so I can't really imagine not having a family dog, I'd say go for it mate 8) Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 21:41:14 I noticed (bloody adverts) that it's Pedigree Chum adopt a homeless dog week or something. Did make me wonder what they do with the left over dogs.

Even that is a lie!!! He got up and lit a fag, I got up and said I was going to the loo, I had to wait a minute for my mum to come out and when I got back he'd pissed in a glass coz he was gonna piss himself. Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: pauld on Monday, February 4, 2008, 00:32:58 Moving back onto the topic, you (jim, not sussex or birdy) need to be a bit wary that if you do get another dog, it doesn't piss off the cairn. The cairn may see it as invading it's turf which equals misery for the cairn if new dog gets top rank or misery for new dog if cairn bullies it, so get some advice on integrating new dogs. Erm, this isn't specifically based on cairns being inhospitable to new dogs, more the age of the dog. At that age, it's going to be pretty settled in its ways and may well take umbrage at a newcomer.
EDIT: But what Oevil says is right, if you do get another dog, REHOME. There's far too many dogs that need rehoming to fund the breeders and remember rehomed dogs are like ugly people - they're better, because they're more grateful. Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: herthab on Monday, February 4, 2008, 06:35:54 I got rescue dog when he was 6 months old. The previous owners said he was vicious, unruly and would destroy things (Carpets, wooden furniture, corners of walls, etc, etc).
He's been with me for almost 13 years now and he's the best dog in the world! He never fights, never goes on the lead, is incredibly intelligent and has more friends in my local than I do :D I think that all he needed was a bit of love and attention. He not the most attractive of dogs (He looks like he should be with a big issue seller!) But he's the best mate I've ever had............................... Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: STFCBird on Monday, February 4, 2008, 08:33:18 My old dog was a rescue dog and she was the sweetest most trusting dog ever, never had any problems. She was in the home through no fault of her own, she was owned by an old couple who bothe died
Title: Shall I get another dog? Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, February 4, 2008, 08:56:01 I want a dog, but what with having 3 cats and not being at home between 8 and 5 everyday it'd be a bit harsh to leave the dog on it's own.
