Title: Record number of strikers?
Post by: normy on Friday, February 1, 2008, 17:02:00
Crikey!  Cox, Paynter, Corr, Sturrock, Ashikodi. Strikers!
Arguably, all of these capable of doing some sort of job at least, in this Division. And all signed, not loaned.
Is this a record? Please comment.   :)

We might have to put some of them down. Or start playing 5 up front. Both acceptable options.

I would offer 66/67 as being a vintage season for strikers....we could pick from Dennis (Bullets ) Brown, Keith East, Ken Skeen, Jimmy Lawton and the great Pat Terry.

Between them this lot scored 607 career league goals.....Skeen was a Trowbridge boy who had his finest moment scoring v West Ham in our 3-1 win at the CG, a match whose highlights were shown on Sportsnight with Coleman.  However he was the least productive of the quintet and was shipped out to the Scum, where he netted a modest  28 goals in 214 games.

That season we scored 81 goals in the league....have we scored more since Tails?

Yes Reg, vintage. But that season Skeen was a winger, and scored only once. The four strikers Terry, Lawton, East, and Bullets got 29 between them, but Rogers got 32. I knew Keith East slightly, through some mates. He was a bit of a lad, I believe.

Nah....Skeen was definitely a striker...he didn't score a league goal, that season.  As regards winger we could call on Don, Eric Weaver, Bruce Walker or Bobby Jones.

We should play the classic 2-3-5 formation like they used to do until some point in the (I'm guessing) early60's.

How about (using the proper numbering system)

                                 1. Brezovan
                                Full Backs
             2. Commmingues (Right Back)               3. Vincent(Left Back)

                                Half Backs
          4. Easton (Right Half)            5. Peacock(Centre Half)          6. McNamee  (Left Half)

                                  Forwards
   7. Ashikobi (Outside Right) 8.Sturrock (Inside Right)  9.Corr (Centre Forward)               10. Paynter (Inside Left)   11. Cox (Outside Left)

It would be worth a goal start playing that formation, just for the shock value! What I would pay a lot of money to see is a team playing a 1-2-7 formation which is what I seem to remember reading somewhere, is the formation The Wanderers played against The Royal Engineers in the first FA Cup Final in 1872.

Marvellous, Mr Chumley Warner!

There's a place in Cheshire called Cholmondeley (prononced Chumley) its near Malpas.

I've always assumed its how Mr CW spelt his name.

Have done that...worked a bloody treat...3-0 up inside 10 minutes, they shat themselves when they realised what we were up to.  It was 3-3 at half time (I am now more tactically aware than I was then)

And actually I played 3-2-5 as I recall...but nearly...a bit...s'pose...

I'll get me sheepskin...

Hamon was a Channel Islander....Hoddle played at Spurs with a fairly average lad called Chris Jones, who was also from Jersey, and recomended   Hamon.....shame he wasn't as good as Le Tiss.

It was against Lu'on, on Easter Saturday, just two days before the 4-6 at St Andrews, in which Bodin didn't score.

And missed that chance which was like all of his goals (running in diagonally into the penalty area) away against Brentford when Vic Callow had sent White and Mitchell off.   0-0, good result 9 v 11 (or should that be 12).

And probably, most of those were 1-0 wins. My favourite 'Bodin scoring the winner with the only goal of the game' was away to Sunderland. It was, in the words of the song, just a perfect day 8)

You're absolutely right McSporran.

It sounds totally fucking stupid.

Look at this..no less than five 1-0 wins where Bodin (a left back lest we forget)...
Wolves (H)
Sunderland (A)
Pompey (H)
Posh (H)
Luton (H)
...scored the winner

That's courtesy of the fantastic http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/ website btw.

It should also be remembered that in those days of free flowing football with Hoddle pulling the strings at the sweeper role, most of those results were ground out and were not great games.

I remember that Brentford game very well. Bodin was the perverbial whisker away from winning that game for us as well.

And Sunderland missed two pelanties did they not?  Just another day in the transformation of Bodin from being a weak, gawky one footed liability to the Greatest Left Back in History.

Ahh, the magic and romance of Roker....I also recall the ever so brave Mackems pelting the few hundred with coins.

They just missed the one pen, but it was as good as missing two as it was in the 93rd minute. Kevin Ball. I can hear the ball smacking against the advertising boards even now. And it wasn't a penalty. No one even knew what the hell it was given for. Kevin Lynch of Knaresbrough :?

Defo Brentford as I remember it like it was yesterday, there were some drunk blokes behind us on the terraces who basically used us as something to lean on through out the match.

Didn't go to Watford away but heard Chalky's hat trick on the radio.
