It was the social club of the Communist Party. The CP historically was always pretty lively in Swindon...what with the railways and other heavy industry....the legendary Ike Gradwell always used to get a fair number of votes in general elections. I always thought the cheap beer prices were as a result of KGB sponsorship. The great thing about the place was when pubs closed at 10:30 in the week, you could always get a late one there. Highlights used to be the Chilean evenings, when refugees from General Pinochet's repression , used to put on food and music as a way of getting some money. Couldn't quite work out how it got its fundage, but the walls were decorated with Labour Party luminaries, who had been to the uni, and came back for events.....Captain Bob lived just down the road in his council house.
