Title: anyone for cricket?
Post by: sonic youth on Sunday, January 20, 2008, 18:06:05
this idea was mooted back at the start of last summer and a few were interested - who fancies looking for a side in the swindon area?

nets will be starting soon so we can hit the ground running

I feel so left out nowadays. Haven't played cricket for 2 seasons now!

Might try and get back into it at Goatacre this year

Gents...

Nets. I've spoken to the chap at Dauntseys school, although as I type it's dawned on me some of you are coming from further away than Swindon (Dauntseys is in Lavington which is basically Devizes)... I can have nets on a week night any time from March. Facilities are excellent there, and it would only be about £1.50 to £2.00 a head per session (up to 2 hours).

Like I say, it might be too far away and I'll enquire about places for some pre-season nets in Swindon... but just a thought.

if it ain't swindon, it's too far for me to travel.

i haven't made any enquiries myself yet as i was hoping for more responses!

based on nothing other than 'what i've heard' swindon is a bit of soulless club and you might do well to steer clear. most clubs around the level of swindon prefer to play a mixture of experienced old gits and talented young players in their sunday cricket. it might be worth your while trying to find a smaller 'village' team that would value more for your presence than your ability. anyway, that's my 2 penneth

in that case i'm going to give up.

boeta has spoken!

i went to swindon cc a couple of years ago, and so many people had their heads up their asses it wasn't even funny.

Nah, don't give up. Though Swindon might not be the best club for a bunch 'social' cricketers to start playing as it is a club where the emphasis is on performance. Lots of avenues out there though.

Nice idea... I think the problems would be finding a regular "home" ground, although we could simply be a visiting side, we play a few of them.

More difficult would be sorting fixtures, even our Sunday friendly XI have a full card sorted by December. I'd be happy to try and arrange a few one-off games against some local sides if we could cobble eleven together though.

Fair enough. If anyone else is up for it we can try and arrange a little knock-around again.

Me too still.

Jim, now that you've got money are you in?

With the better weather (well, sort of) we could just play at Lydiard.

i have no idea. someone at work plays for their firsts and keeps inviting me along for nets. i'm reluctant to go cos i still don't have so much as a bat :)

t'would be good to get a few people along for nets and see what happens though. their firsts are of a good standard, won the nkvo in 2002 and 2003

Slightly less professional....but still think we should arrange a knock about at a park or something soon.

Weekends are fairly un eventful with no football, I can get pretty much all the stuff....its just deciding a time & place!

I played cricket today. I'd forgotten how shit I was. I had myself built up in my head but then I just started spraying the ball all over the place. I'm clinging the hope that I'm just out of practise, as opposed to awful.

I was doing ok a couple of years ago - opened the bowling for my school and would have been pushing for a second team spot at Goatacre had I been more consistent. Then I got a job. Having not played for about two years I'm seriously worried about how crap I'm going to be when I play again  :(

I reckon im the best Cricketer ever.

Ian Botham went to my School so that just about proves it.

Ive never actually played it though and it sounds like a alot of effort.
