I used to get the impression that he would have loved to been able to say that he was born and brought up in the East End, hence the 'cheeky cockney con man/50's throwback image', and that he was gutted by the fact that actually he had been born and brought up in the totally non-hip/trendy cultural vacuum that is Swindon. I think it used to be really hard for him to even admit he was from Swindon but these days he makes quite a few references to it. I reckon he's mellowing out with age and is coming to accept what he is and where he's from. As for being a Town fan though??? Not a chance. He's not even slightly interested in football, let alone STFC. There is a bloke on Radio 2 called Tim Smith who really is a Town fan though.
