Title: Word's that don't look right!
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Thursday, January 17, 2008, 18:31:34
You know what I mean, sometimes you write/type a word and even though it is spelt correctly for some reason it just doesn't look right.

Mine is weather: as in "Weather or not", for some reason I can't help but to think that the correct spelling is "Wether or not".

The definition of the word wether is actually: :
Quote
a male sheep castrated before sexual maturity; also : a castrated male goat
. Which just wouldn't work at all would it?.

So what about yours? I have noticed a few people getting "Their" and "There" confused.[/quote]

not so much as looks wrong. I find it difficult not to use the possessive noun 's on it. I'm always writing something along the lines of "it's cheese" instead of "its cheese".

Wait is that the right way round?

I find when i have been seriously deprived of sleep (often) my spelling is fucking stupid. I substitute whole words which rhyme or something. It's all a bit Jabberwocky half the time.

Last week i was spelt load, lowed, paid, as payed, convinced myself refusure was a word and got very stuck on the word alot, a lot, allot...

I got ridiculed by my house-mates at uni for suggesting I knew three ways to spell the word that sounds like 'where'.

More fool them.

You beat me to it, but first I checked and find that ware is not a word on it's own.

Any plural with an unnecessary apostrophe.

  To quote Frank Zappa...

"It should be easy to see
"The crux of the biscuit
is the apostrophe"

Like words???

Its a typing habit of mine, for some reason I just started throwing in an apostrophe between any 't' and 's' that came at the end of words.

Yep...think I'd have gone for ou rather than the correct uo.

manoeuvre... I always have to check. Think its meant to be a dipthong, which generally seem to have disappeared from spelling.  Which is probably a good thing.

I'm sure MS Word used to adjust the text for dipthongs, not sure if it still does.

In fact, in a burst of irony,  I believe 'ware' appears in the nursery rhyme

"Simple Simon met a pieman..."

Yes, bizarrely "it's" is a contraction of it is rather than, as one might imagine, the posessive, which is "its". No, don't thank me.
