Title: Weekend trips away Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, January 14, 2008, 18:21:27 Decided this year that as I live in pretty much the heart of Europe that i am going to try and see as much as possible this year. Starting with a trip to Gdansk in Poland in a couple of weeks. Anyone been?
Hoping to take a step into Scandinavia this year (probably Stockholm and Rejyavik) and booked up for my first trip to Portugal in April. Any other hidden gems in Europe greatly appreciated. Title: Weekend trips away Post by: mattboyslim on Monday, January 14, 2008, 18:24:33 Not been myself but I've heard Ljubljana in Slovenia is meant to be a great city, and reasonably unfettered by stag weekedns etc.

Photography opportunities would be the key factor for me and the wife, so Prague is on our list to do. Other than that, I'm interested in what responses you get really..... Oh, and avoid Rome. IMO, its a dump. Title: Weekend trips away Post by: pumbaa on Monday, January 14, 2008, 18:26:52 Quote from: "i was once mexico red" granada, andalucia. nicest place in europe. Mex - been to Sevilla? Title: Weekend trips away Post by: janaage on Monday, January 14, 2008, 18:50:15 Stockholm's quality beautiful place, natives are friendly, beers not as expensive as people say (if you don't drink in tourist traps).
Ljubljana's lovely to although Lake Bled (about 45 mins up the road) is perfect place for couples well worth a visit (and a row to the little island in the lake if you're there in summer). Slovenia is Europe's little secret at the moment, from the Alps in the north, to Ljubljana to the coastal towns of Piran, Izola and err cant remember the other one. My gf and I spent a week travelling around Slovenia and have to say it was one of the nicest countries I've ever been to. The Italian Dolomites are mighty fine....maybe a trip combining both...Dolomites and some Slovenia suppose might be pushing it for a weekend. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Berchtesgaden etc. Beer's not bad either, but really depends what you're looking for.
But when it rains, it fucking rains. Title: Weekend trips away Post by: Reg Smeeton on Monday, January 14, 2008, 20:57:22 Quote from: "Karlsruhe_Red" Berchtesgaden etc. Is Hitler's place still there? Title: Weekend trips away Post by: Gelbfüßler on Monday, January 14, 2008, 21:04:43 Not sure about his house but the Eagle's Nest is still there and is quite a tourist attraction. Never been myself but I imagine you get quite a view from up there.

The Eagle's Nest survived because it was a late gift to Hitler and litttle used. Would be fascinatiing to visit. Title: Weekend trips away Post by: Luci on Monday, January 14, 2008, 21:15:12 Valencia is a great city.
Went for my 21st and so much to see and do and the food is superb! Virtually no British holidaymakers (the best bit!) no english foods etc. just really spanish. Got city and beaches - perfect combo. Highly recommended and not expensive at all for 5* city break. I've been to Granada..the whole Moorish occupation of Spain, and the reconquest under Ferdinand and Isabella..is a seminal part of European history. I've always wanted to visit the Mezquita in Cordoba...maybe one day. |
