Title: Musicals
Post by: Tails on Sunday, January 13, 2008, 21:50:29
Has anyone on here ever seen one??

I ask because I took my girlfriend to London for the weekend as a christmas present, and it included Phantom of The Opera last night at Her Majestys Theater (as well as randomly being upgraded to a 5 star hotel in Leicester Square). I wasn't really expecting to enjoy it but to my complete surprise (and hers!) it was absolutely amazing! Never experienced anything like it before.

Would definitely do it again or reccomend it to anyone. Theres even a Monty Python one out now which looks pretty decent.

Been to see "Joseph...." about 5 times, my family are obsessive about it, i just flat refuse to see it anymore. Blood Brothers is really good, do not see Cats

Rocky Horror picture show, 1998 (ish) at the wyvern theatre.

My aunt's boyfriend went dressed as Rocky,
My aunt went dressed as Magenta
Your's Truly went as Riff-Raff.

Fucking outstanding night.

Hated every minute of Phantom myself. Paid a reasonable £££ for the seats and found Her Majestys Theater to be a pretty shocking venue.

Don't go too often, but last year saw Sound of Music twice (once for free), and that silly bint that won the 'Maria' TV show (whole point of going) wasn't in it either time. We did go to Gordon Ramsay's restaurant for lunch before. Which I suppose £40 a head set menu and another £40 on wine isn't too bad. Anyway I digress.

Musicals are great, use to take my ex every few months when I lived near London.  You can get cheap tickets in Leicester Square in a booth next to the Pizza Hut - superb night out and always worth the money

I also remeber gettin pissed in Witherspoons before the show, there where so many people dressed up in there, tha it cuold have been mistaken for a trekkie convention.

There's a light
OVER IN THE FRANKENSTEIN PLACE
There's li ii ii ii iii ght
BURING IN THE FIREPLACE.

Although i do think that Rocky Horror deserves it's own category within the musical's gendra )Sp)

Yeah there were loads of people there queueing up to get some. It is a fantastic night, but London is riduculously expensive.. Don't know what I was expecting really but it was about £11 for two drinks at the theatre. Never been to a musical before and it was quite an experience.

Got to wander round London a bit as we had daypasses for the tube which was pretty cool. The amount of cinemas and McDonalds is bloody ridiculous!

That's because you were in Leicester Square Tails....home of cinema and the centre of London's tourist district

I live a 5 minutes walk from there so I'm kind of used to it now :D

edit: Musicals! Yeh! Blood Brothers is great as mentioned above although the West End one was nowhere near as good as the one I saw in Bath! Joseph is good, and Rocky Horror really is just a totally different experience!

London is ace! but very expensive

You should try taking Strood and his mate to Mexs club for a night - £160 later and a monster hangover - that was pricey

I used to regularly get dragged to them as a kid and to be honest think they're a bit shit.

Maybe I'm just a bit too guarded to get into the whole thing, but in general I find them a bit cringe worthy.

Love 'em. Seen loads over the years - Les Miserables (twice), Phantom (twice), Lion King, Rent, Blood Brothers (which I fully endorse the previous recommendations), Annie (it was free....), My Fair Lady (we were in the back row and couldn't see shit), Fame and probably more that I can't recall.

I didn't really enjoy Fame and MFL, but the others are all very very good. Especially Rent.

Probably going to see Mamma Mia sometime this year, as the missus loves Abba.....would love to see the Lion King again - that was spectacular!

Agree with that, went a couple of times with school but now hate them, there really is no need to sing everything!

I loved Cats and saw that three times, Phantom was Ok. When you think of the price of a Premier footie match, musicals are well worth the money you know you will get a good performance.

I got some proper strange looks from round the office as I burst out laughing at that, cheers.

On topic, I don't know why we're beating around the bush, musicals are for women and nonces.

I think in general communicating a story through song and dance is pretty shit.

The hills are alive with the sound of music
The songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music

Beautiful

Both the buffy musical episode and the lion king film are awesome. I just don't think such things work on stage.

Everyone seems to rave about Blood Brothers, I thought it would have been better off as a play. The songs were dire and only there for the sake of it being a musical imo, and if that Nolan bird have sung about Marilyn Monroe once more I would have screamed. The actual story was pretty good though, plus it was very funny in places.

Going to see some Motown one next month, which I'm hoping will be better because the songs are all classics.
