Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 12:45:05
Two nominations each please, usual rules apply - no loans, minimum of 50 games.

for players who played in a variety of positions, please choose those you think that full-back was their primary position.

Didn't see them play but if it isn't Thomas (record cap holder) and Trollope (record appearances for town) then there's something wrong with the TEF.

Bodin, Kerslake and Buzzer were class but the above two should be given the shout ahead of the 90's lot.

Bodin - for holding his nerve from the penalty spot at Wembley.  Kerslake would be my other choice.

As Flemming is clearly going to be a nominee despite people never seeing him play, It's only fair that Jock Walker (http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/Person.asp?PersonID=WALKERJO) gets a mention. Caps for Scotland at the same time that Flemming was playing for England (I think they even played against each other in an international) and when Scotland were considered good at this football thing.

I'm going to fuck over Soniques nomination process by only doing one, take that babe.

What position did Fleming play though, a google search told me the he was an "Inside forward" and scored ton's of goals.

WTF is an inside forward????

REG!!!!!!

I think it's where the olden days they used to play a weird 2-3-5 formation or something.

No such thing anymore, the old inside forward - best explained as a midfielder supporting the striker.

The old W formation isn't a millionmiles away from 4-3-3.....for Chelsea Fat Frank is really an inside forward.

Good shout on Jock Walker FB, he used to run a chip shop on the corner of Manchester Road and Corporation Street.

I used to go in there for chips and a natter on the way back from away games by train.

When Fleming played v Walker ....England v Scotland.....Billy Silto was 12th man,  no subs then so he didn't play.

This is a very tough call....Kerslake Bodin   definite quality....but they were more attackers, both being converted midfield players....in the Hoddle system thats what you want.

Rod Thomas and John Trollope were better defenders.

The pick really rests with what to do with Hoddle.

I know that I have already said Bodin and Summerbee but here are my reasons:

1) Bodin: I don't recall seeing a better crosser of the ball, he whipped them in with pin-point accuracy and how many goals did OST score from Bodin corners???

2) Summerbee: Pretty handy at crossing the ball himself although not a patch  on Bodin, what he did have above Bodin was the ability to skin players for fun. And let's not forget THAT pass to Fjortoft in the Prem, where Jan scored with his back to goal.

If I could choose a man on the bench it would obviously be kerslake, handy at both crossing and skinning players, but not as good as the above.

It has to be David Peach at left back for being able to make accurate 75 yard passes to team mates that didn't exist. Or that foreign left back (think he was danish but not sure) that Colin Todd  signed who ducked when the ball was in the air. Only played a couple of games.

OI!

Rules please ladies and gentlemen!

Sonic and Yeovil have named two fucking left backs and Mex two right backs. That's just WRONG!

We need one of each surely?

It doesn't alter my choices but it'll unbalance your sides a bit.

I'm going for Rod Thomas at right back, and I'm torn between Kingy and Zippy at left back.

Errrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................................

Kingy it is. Better in a flat four, and more top flight games.

Bodin and Buzzer - for the reasons Bangkok gave, particularly about them being attacking full-backs, I don't remember too much defending as it doesn't always stick in the mind.  Wish I'd been around to see Trollope and Thomas but before my time

i thought the same but decided it'd open a kettle of fish about wingers, inside/outside forwards, strikers, centre halfs, half backs, wingbacks and so on and so forth so kept it simple!

From what i've seen Bodin and Summerbee, a good mix of defensive quality and unbelievable crossing of the ball.  Although having never seen them play Trollope and Thomas must have been pretty special to achieve what they did.

Bodin and Kerslake in my generation are the best to have played fullback.  I'll just bow to peoples knowledge on Trollope and Thomas so wouldn't argue against them (although my two both were involved in Swindon teams best ever seasons of league football, using the play offs).  I think Kerslake was a cut above Summerbee to be honest, but should never have returned.
