Title: Bext XI: Central defenders (nominations)
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 12:38:56
Two nominations each please, usual rules apply - no loans, minimum of 50 games.

for players who played in a variety of positions, please choose those you think that central defence/centre-half was their primary position.

I am sure Reg and his wrinklie consortium will give us some alternatives. Wasn't Harold Fleming a defender?

Yeah, I'd go along with calderwood and taylor.  Older fans will remember Mel Nurse, a welsh international and Ken McPherson (a defender in the Taylor mould).  Both worth a mention!

We have had shed loads of good central defenders...I know its not just 2 but here are a few to whet the appetite!

Jerel Ifil
ooh Shaun Taylor
Colin Calderwood
Billy Tucker
Steve Aizlewood
Kenny Stroud
Mike Graham
Jon Gittens

But it has to be Calderwood and Taylor for me if I had to choose.

brian borrows and ian culverhouse

both were more sweepers than traditional centre halves and they were both superb with the ball at their feet. really enjoyed watching them play in their respective spells at the club

Oooh, Hoddle as sweeper? Although he'll be in my midfield so I guess that he can't be in 2 places at the same time.

  Irony presumably...

  Calderwood is a defo....Shaun is a possible.

Both  Stan Harland and Frank Burrows are strong contenders.  They worked particularly well together  Frank the stopper, Stan could do a bit with the ball, but was still hard and a leader.

I think Calderwood and Harland, would have been special.

Stan was left sided, a typical scouser never shut up....it was Dave McKay  biggest error as manager to get rid of Stan, as he was too opinionated and played in his position.

Nestor was the best body checker I've seen, it must be something they work on early in Argentina.....the innocent look hands in the air, as he just blocked off a runner.

Has to be Calderwood and Taylor. I almost want to put Gittins in instead of Taylor for his gay use of the word "time" that he used to scream at Colin at every opportunity.

Calderwood and Burrows - Calderwood shades it over Harland because although Stan was vocal and determined he was the master of the "dodgy" back pass particularly when it was wet and muddy.......

Ooh Shaun Taylor for sheer commitment and extraordinary goal scoring prowess as a centre-half, Calderwood for coolness and overall quality - and the odd goal from the half way line! Jerel is not far off and would probably be in their if playing at higher level. Today was typical performance from him i.e pace, tackling even control at times. He is getting better and better.

Hanging on to your coat tails Reg.

Was going to suggest Harland and Wolfe,  but the main thing they were involved with went down faster than Oxford

If I can't pick Nestor I'm going to sulk  :x

Possibly the best defender I've ever seen at the club and frozen out of the team because we couldn't afford the next payment on his transfer!

So I'll have to go for Calderwood and .....

Gittens!

Sorry guys but Taylor was fucking clueless once he came up against decent quality opposition. That Premiership season was fucking embarrassing.

Gitts on the other hand at least managed to struggle through 2/3 seasons in the top flight with Saints and Boro.

Calderwood and, erm, I can't decide.  Taylor gave you everything he had but was he really of the right quality.  Again, prior to 1983ish I can't judge anyone's ability so I'll go for Gittens.  Lorenzo could have been the best ever I think, that was a crazy transfer.  Culverhouse was absolute class, closest to watching a defensive Hoddle, but we were in a lower league with much poorer forwards against him so that has to count against him unfortunately.
