Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: BANGKOK RED on Friday, January 11, 2008, 17:21:24 Quote I am sure that you will all be delighted to know that we have officially been successfully taken over. Our new owners are very astute business men, and it is estimated that our new owners have in the region of 1 Billion sterling between them. We are not expecting to be the next Chelsea, we aren't going to be putting any bids in for Drogba or Rooney ect, but we are still fairly minted. Our debt's are now officially cleared and our transfer embargo will be lifted soon, the future is rosy! The Championship beckons and after that, we'll who know's. Maybe the Premiership may seem a bit of a dream but let's face it, in our current situation it's hardly unrealistic is it, in a few years or so? In the meantime though I think that us Swindon fans will settle for a couple of years in the Championship and a few good cup runs (3rd/4th round upwards, not mickey mosuse qualifying rounds) without having to sell our best players and a strong possibility of a brand new stadium with a stand on each side. Anyway, it has been a pleasure to catch up on old times again, and I promise to be in touch soon. I eagerly await your response. Yours Faithfully. Bangkok Red. P.S. It would be pointless picking at my spellng or grammar as I am drunk through celebration tonight. http://oxfordshireforums.co.uk/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=74342 I am certain that they will be gald to hear your views on the topic as well! To hear them say fair play to you and such like really doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't compare with any of those. Neither club is big enough for a start and I would say the Old Firm and as previously mentioned, the River Plate/Boca Juniors rivalries are out on their own. To call the say that the STFC/POX rivalry is not fierce is ridiculous. You should be a red born and bred in Oxon. It is fierce they loathe us. I just love that and miss the big games. I never forget some Didcot Yellows had their car turned over on its side in the late 70's at Swindon. :old: Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: mattboyslim on Friday, January 11, 2008, 22:21:11 What a poor load of responses, only one mention off webbed feet and a few bits of highbrow banter about swindump, how disappointing. Oxofrd fans like thier club relaly must do better, they can't even do bitter and twisted well.
Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: Christy on Friday, January 11, 2008, 23:39:35 A month ago we nearly lost our club, we might never find out how close it was.
As another born and bred, living and breathing in enemy territory, where did the sympathy come from? Plastics? The Sky generation in the pub? No, it came from Pox fans, friends and relative strangers, but they know what shit is. I hate Oxford United with an immature, gloating, burning intensity. But I won't forget the class of those fans who, knowing the pain, sincerely didn't want us to join them in the gutter. Title: I just couldn't help it! Love em (for the rivalry) and hate them but would rather we often played them.
Worst trouble ive witnessed is Watford Luton about 7 years ago, had a watford lad who played on our sunday team didnt see him for a year after, his name was dilly (not gazzas fat mate) he was on teh pitch and was filmed throwing a 1 corner flag into some luton lads head. Nasty and foolish with CCTV around. They loathe each other Went to Arsenal Spurs and its all throwing bottles, went to Celtic Rangers which is in a league of its own - fucking scary shit up there Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: flammableBen on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 08:21:50 I've got a vague memory of someone like reg, maybe it was reg, pointing out that it's (or was) one of the last proper inter-county close up rivalries.
I'm not really sure what I'm getting at, something about being far away and caring but being close and not giving a shit about Liverpool. Or something. I've confused myself. Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 15:01:00 I've never really understood why it's Oxford that became the fierce rivalry (although I'm sure Reg will have a theory). Read the history books, and it's Swindon/Reading that used to be the #1 rivalry. Two railway towns not far from each other. Oxford didn't even appear until less than 50 years ago.
It's not just the Oxford fans who seem to have given up though. We've had our own rough spell and I'm sure that the rivalry on these forums and elsewhere is much less vitriolic and bitter than it used to be 5 or 10 years ago. Both sets of fans have had more important things to worry about. The rivalry isn't what it once was - and maybe we'll see Reading, City or Rovers rise to the 'most hated' spot before long. I don't really 'hate' Oxford any more. There's no longer anything there to hate. Title: I just couldn't help it! Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: flammableBen on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 18:51:01 I can't really bring myself to particularly dislike Rovers. All the trouble only ever seems like a few twats on each side whilst the majority seem ok. It always seem like any trouble is more out of convenience then any proper rivalry, you've got to give the hard boys something to do a couple of times a season.
Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 20:27:59 personally i don't give a toss about reading unless we play them, city i have a slight dislike for him, i look down on rovers like an unwanted baby brother and hate oxford.
Title: I just couldn't help it! Post by: mattboyslim on Saturday, January 12, 2008, 20:33:43 Reading I am not really bothered about, I just long for the era when we could look down on them, Rovers I always didn't mind until the last couple of years, and always enjoyed the disdain they hold city in, now I'mnone too keen. I don't really like city, and if they got promoted this season I'd be a bit gutted as they have this mythical big club illusion which promotion to the prem would almost justify. As for Oxford, now that is a proper local rivalry, don't like the place, the club, any of it.
