Title: the wire Post by: lebowski on Thursday, January 10, 2008, 21:37:33 does anyone watch this?
i swear to god, this is the very best tv program i have ever seen in my life. it is shown on fx (channel 165) on monday nights. they are currently half way through series 2 (of 4 - series 5 has just begun in america). i really cannot tell you how much you have to watch this. wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wire_%28TV_series%29) on the surface, it's about the cops in baltimore. but if you watch it then you'll find it's equally about the people they are hunting, and why these bad guys are doing what they do. then you see the personal lives of both the cops and the criminals and find that not only are these guys and girls very similar, but in some cases if you take away the uniforms and guns and you'd struggle to know who is good and who is bad. absolutely fantastic. get on it. Title: the wire Post by: Spud on Friday, January 11, 2008, 15:46:32 Ive always wanted to watch this but never got round to it, i may have to go out and purchase the 3 series on dvd sometime.
Title: the wire Post by: lebowski on Friday, January 11, 2008, 18:52:31 i've always liked you spud.
i promise you, get series 1, you will not regret it. this program is like a good novel, you have to soak up the early episodes to really know what's going on. and just in case you are wondering, my favourite character is omar. he is a guy who goes around the 'hood carrying a shot gun and robs drug dealers. bad ass mother fucker. Title: the wire Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Friday, January 11, 2008, 19:45:16 This, along with 24, is next on my list of tv series to work through once I finish with the sopranos, I've heard a lot of people praise the wire.

the detail re-focus their attention to the barksdale crew and their drug dealing. it will be on at the same time as prison break, but the wire is superior by quite some distance. am currently 9 episodes through the 1st series, fuck me this is good. i thought heroes was, but this is something else. omar is a goodun i admit, but for some reason i like stringer, he's doing a degree and wears glasses and everything. herc's a dickhead though. Title: the wire Post by: yeo on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 23:28:58 I borrowed season 1 off a mate but i couldnt get into it.
Title: the wire Post by: reeves4england on Monday, February 4, 2008, 00:18:44 Sounds like something I could get into this summer if I start watching it. Too scared to start now as I have too many distractions stopping me getting work done already!

Title: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Friday, February 22, 2008, 11:07:16 That is brilliant! I'd forgotten that scene completely. I've just finished watching the fourth series and it's just gets better and better. Although the end of S3 is perhaps the best moment so far...
Title: the wire Post by: lebowski on Saturday, February 23, 2008, 12:00:19 here's another favoured scene of mine.
it's when d teaches bodie and wallace how to play chess: king stay the king (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bR3T1eThJU) "this the king, he move any damn direction he choose... but he aint got no hussle" very good. The Wire has been around for ages, I always wondered what was taking everyone so long to enjoy it. Title: Re: the wire Post by: pauld on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 22:05:10 Woah, just been reading the piece in yesterdays Telegraph mag about David Simon, the creator of the Wire and thinking i must take the time to see this (and read his books). Then come on TEF and what's got bumpage? Begone, get out of my head TEF mind-suckers!
Title: Re: the wire Post by: strooood on Sunday, September 14, 2008, 22:29:57 still cruising through series three.

One day, when I get paid I'm gonna get me a season 5. As compensation I'm going through 3 again. Shiiiiiiiiiiit it is still so very good. Oh David Simon's book - Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets - which became the brilliant Homicide: Life On The Street has finally been published in Britain. It's all about Simon's time with the Balmer Police and much of The Wire is taken directly from the cases and characters in it. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Scot Munroe on Friday, September 19, 2008, 09:48:59 season 5 comes out on monday.

Well they can't I suppose - to missquote Slim Charles 'the games the same, just got more fierce'.
But what ending could be good enough to stand up to all that - McNulty sobering up and stopping being a breathing machine for his dick? Omar getting played? Herc working something out for himself? Title: Re: the wire Post by: Lumps on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 19:26:52 I'm watching Ep11 of season 4 streaming in another window as I type.

Title: Re: the wire Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, February 2, 2009, 22:55:17 How much did you pay for it?
Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, February 2, 2009, 22:57:08 £10 i think.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, February 2, 2009, 22:58:35 Sorry, I can't hear you.

Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, February 2, 2009, 23:00:18 Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: the wire Post by: michael on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 17:47:18 Good to see this one still going, over a year since it was born.
Feel free to put your favourite scenes up on here. Anyone watching Generation Kill? Early on, it would seem that The Wire was no fluke... Title: Re: the wire Post by: Scot Munroe on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 19:57:47 The montage at the end with the s1 theme tune is one of my favourites.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, 23:11:15 dont know if this has been put up before but its worth watching again
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rN7pkFNEg5c&feature=related Title: Re: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, 09:58:04 I can't remember if it was you Mex who said that they'd read Homicide: A Year On The Street, the David Simon book? But that scene with the photocopier really happened - quite a few times. It seems to have been almost a standard technique with the Balmer Police Department.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Thursday, February 12, 2009, 21:30:54 This finally arrived today. I can now watch the first episode.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, February 12, 2009, 22:29:39 i have the whole lot on my HDD, just havnt got round to watching it
Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Thursday, February 12, 2009, 22:38:57 First episode was intersting, a lot of characters introduced. Will see how the next one goes before ordering series two.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 12, 2009, 23:05:07 That scene is quality. I may have to make a point of watching this at some point.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: LucienSanchez on Friday, February 13, 2009, 08:36:42 2 & 3 just arrived from Singapore or somewhere, so that's Saturday night sorted after the Six Nations...
Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Friday, February 13, 2009, 08:52:44 Noticed my DVD is an Australian version. Bizarre.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: caveman on Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:06:17 really good show, one of my all time fav's
s2 is a bit shit tho i reckon, polish dock people are boring wont spoil it for anyone, but after the end of s5 there were so many things that i wanted to happen that didn't happen i got a bit pissed off but still definitely worth watching anyone seen the shield? Title: Re: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Friday, February 13, 2009, 09:46:33 One of the things I liked most about s5 was precisely that it didn't complete all the stories - the fucked up, corrupt world just goes on... It's just all in the game.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: strooood on Friday, February 13, 2009, 12:10:57 The ending was nice.
I had a think about some of the names who don't make it into the final montage and almost shed a tear. Not too sure about Marlo's ending though. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Sussex on Friday, February 13, 2009, 23:37:50 Right you buggers, it's my birthday at the end of the month. It sounds like it is, but is it worth asking for series 1 and seeing where I go from there?
Title: Re: the wire Post by: pauld on Friday, February 13, 2009, 23:50:51 Absolutely sussex, just finished watching series 1 in a series of late night "Coding and drug-related violence (on TV)" sessions and can't wait to get hold of series 2-4. And 5 when that comes down to a tenner as well (cheapskate that I am)
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, February 13, 2009, 23:55:06 I found a link which has them all on there youtube style. It's on my home computer (on work laptop at the moment) but I'll post it somewhere when I get the chance.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: red socks on Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:42:47 I have a wire problem.
I got season two through the post and watched it all in a week. Some nights I watched 3 episodes in one nite finishing at three in the morning. It made me late for work. I feel dirty and ashamed. I am waiting for 3 and 4 to be delivered now - I ordered both in one go such is the state of my affliction. I am posting this in an attempt to stop others going down the same sorry path. Be careful people, I thought I was in control, but I've let myself down, and I've let my family down. Title: Re: the wire Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:43:36 I've just started downloading series 1.
I'm unemployed. Title: Re: the wire Post by: red socks on Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:54:08 I've just started downloading series 1. I'm unemployed. I'd best not try and find where to download it for free or I'll be on it all night. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Arriba on Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:55:05 i have no idea what the wire is?
Title: Re: the wire Post by: red socks on Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:59:39 i have no idea what the wire is? its one of the best tv shows i think i've ever seen Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, February 16, 2009, 00:23:22 i have no idea what the wire is? I ordered the first series no the strength of this thread. It's not bad, but I've only watched the first 3 eps so I'm not a total addict yet. Title: Re: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Monday, February 16, 2009, 07:57:01 I ordered the first series no the strength of this thread. It's not bad, but I've only watched the first 3 eps so I'm not a total addict yet. Yeah I've heard people say this before - it doesn't seem to really kick in until about ep four or five. Don't worry Axs, watch it and it will come. Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, February 16, 2009, 09:43:30 I have nothing to do today, so disc two may take a bashing.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: juddie on Monday, February 16, 2009, 10:19:09 I started series one on saturday. I'd had a few pints watching the rugby so may have have to watch the first two episodes again...
Title: Re: the wire Post by: flammableBen on Monday, February 16, 2009, 12:42:05 i fell asleep watching the first episode at about 3.30 this morning. I might have to start again.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: michael on Monday, February 23, 2009, 13:37:43 The entire run starts again tonight on FX (Channel 165) at 2300, and then weekly I guess.
Enjoy. Title: Re: the wire Post by: michael on Monday, February 23, 2009, 22:58:30 Silly me, it is actually on channel 164.
Channel 165 is FX +1, which will show it in an hour's time. Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, February 23, 2009, 23:00:57 I've ordered the second series. Nearly finished the first.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Bedford Red on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 18:44:31 I got series 1 for xmas, watched 5 episodes so far and getting into it more each episode.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Thursday, March 5, 2009, 23:13:47 Just started the second series tonight. Hope it does keep getting better and better, the first series was alright, but nothing spectacular.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, March 5, 2009, 23:18:46 I downloaded most of the first series but can't get through the first episode. Not that it's bad (I dunno yet), although it didn't seem amazing, more because I've seen the first half three times now before bailing/falling asleep. I do like the bit at the start where some kids being questioned on why they let some other kid in on buying crack (or something) if he always tried to run off with the money.
I guess it never really clicked with me that the first series must be 7(?) or so years old now. I think I was expecting something more polished (production wise, not grittiness of the stories) I guess, I dunno, something about the way it's shot reminds me of Diagnosis Murder. Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Friday, March 6, 2009, 17:24:15 The fact none of them a PC is a bit weird.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: michael on Thursday, March 12, 2009, 18:37:55 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7940061.stm
"BBC Two to show US TV's The Wire" Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Thursday, March 12, 2009, 20:52:08 I just ordered 3 and 4 so hope they get to 5 quick.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, March 12, 2009, 20:54:46 Quote The deal to broadcast the series comes after Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan argued the BBC should stop buying shows from overseas and put the cash into original productions instead. Sounds like some sour grapes going on with something? Title: Re: the wire Post by: michael on Sunday, March 22, 2009, 20:03:07 BBC starts showing this on 30th March 2009.
i.e. A week tomorrow. I think they are showing an episode every night. Title: Re: the wire Post by: juddie on Sunday, March 22, 2009, 21:59:37 i've just finished series 1... very good, but I assume it gets even better?
Not as good as the sopranos at the mo IMO, but it's early days. Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Sunday, March 22, 2009, 22:12:52 I preferred the second series, I'm watching three now and thats good too.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Friday, March 27, 2009, 15:44:22 Just a reminder for anyone who hasn't watched The Wire yet. It starts on BBC2 on Monday night at 11.20 and then runs all week and then probably until you've finished season five.
So long as you remember to give it more than one episode, and don't expect Diagnosis Murder. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Monday, March 30, 2009, 22:27:51 bump, just started on bbc 2
Title: Re: the wire Post by: yeo on Monday, March 30, 2009, 22:37:19 I watched the 1st couple of episodes and gave up,now i hear you have to stick with it as its a grower but I really cant be bothered.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: flammableBen on Monday, March 30, 2009, 22:44:47 I might finally get through the first episode as it's on the telly at the moment and I can do other things whilst it's on.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: A Gent Orange on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 08:11:39 That is the great thing about The Wire, you can do other things while watching it. They never, ever reveal crucial bits of plot detail - including the off screen death of major characters - through small bits of chatter.
And it's not on iPlayer. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 09:24:27 Ive sky plussed it - might give it a go if my low attention span allows me
Title: Re: the wire Post by: strooood on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 09:30:03 Ive sky plussed it - might give it a go if my low attention span allows me I don't think it's one for the low attention span, but best of luck.Title: Re: the wire Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 09:31:43 Thanks sounds like I might need it - think the other half might like it though
Title: Re: the wire Post by: strooood on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 10:29:17 If you need any help on the language, you know where to find me. I am a seasoned Wire translator after watching five season with my dad.
let's start - 'bal-head bitches' = chess pawns. confused? Title: Re: the wire Post by: Jamiesfuturewife on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, 11:03:22 ummm yes a bit :-[

Title: Re: the wire Post by: Berniman on Sunday, May 3, 2009, 18:47:25 For those that are interested, season 2 starts tomorrow night on BBC2 at 11.30ish. It's on every weeknight until the season is complete like they did with season 1 a few weeks ago!
Hopefully they are doing the same for seasons over the coming months! Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Sunday, May 3, 2009, 19:09:13 Someone shout when they get to season 5.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, May 14, 2009, 10:17:46 Really starting to get into this now, for some reason series 2 has been more interesting for me than series 1 (so far).
Not happy with the scheduling on the Beeb though. Now only being shown 3 nights a week and still at rediculous times. Still, if it's only 3 hours in a week I may just end up recording them and watching them at the weekend, that way I can get more sleep! Title: Re: the wire Post by: Berniman on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 13:53:07 Season 3 starts next Monday BBC2 at 11.30ish

Title: Re: the wire Post by: Berniman on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 15:08:57 Brilliant wasn't it! Series 3 has been my favourite so far!
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Scot Munroe on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 15:33:07 all about Hamsterdam in the last couple of episode of season 3. Season 4 is the best series all about the schools in Baltimore.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: Berniman on Sunday, August 16, 2009, 21:35:27 Season 5 starts next Thursday 20th at 11.30ish on BBC2.
This is the last season! Title: Re: the wire Post by: axs on Monday, August 17, 2009, 16:43:04 Thanks for the heads up, it was in HMV for 25 quid but i thought that was a bit steep.
Title: Re: the wire Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, August 17, 2009, 17:57:24 Thanks for the heads up, it was in HMV for 25 quid but i thought that was a bit steep. i think i got my copy for about 15 quid online. you're welcome to borrow it if you promise to return it :pthe fifth season is probably the weakest of the lot but it's still damned good. the last episode is great. Title: Re: the wire Post by: strooood on Monday, August 17, 2009, 19:18:45 i think i got my copy for about 15 quid online. you're welcome to borrow it if you promise to return it :p Wrong, series 2 is.the fifth season is probably the weakest of the lot but it's still damned good. the last episode is great. Title: Re: the wire Post by: Berniman on Monday, August 17, 2009, 19:26:18 Wrong, series 2 is. Agree, Season 3 rocks though to make up for it! Title: Re: the wire Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, August 17, 2009, 20:44:07 season five felt too abridged, too rushed - maybe it was to do with the impending sense of doom at the thought of no more wire.
