Touch a peice of bear metal to "ground" youself, i.e. remove any static discharge you may have before touching the memory chip. You should always ground youself before touching computer components although most people don't and it is very uncommon for items not to work though. Shouldn't that be ground yourself, i.e. touch a door handle or something to discharge any static that may have built up.
