Title: Something i Heard
Post by: red macca on Monday, January 7, 2008, 13:00:30
In regards to martin Ling and im only saying and sharing what I have heard. I have heard that Martin Ling basically talked himself out of the swindon job . Apparantly he insisted that Byrne was not at the club thought that a academy would not be worthwhile and wanted a lot of money to spend on players.

Like I said probably just more rumours BUT if true im glad we did not offer him the job

why not??? sounds right to me ... surely youd want to bring in your own backroom staff ... and academies on the whole dont seem to bring in what you spend on them .. and we need quite a few new players who will cost money to go up ..

Does this mean that Malfoy isnt going to spend any money at all? In which case we can forget signing Cox?

Well the bit about players probably makes sense. Why else would he leave one league 1 team to come to another, unless he was getting paid rediculous amounts of course?

If he would come here purely for money then he'd be off as soon as a bigger job came along.

fitton says that someone talked themselves out of the job by asking for too much money in his adver interview today. whether that was money to spend or money in wages is unclear, so it could indeed by ling.

i think the ling/byrne thing has been posted before, i've certainly heard it from soemwhere.

If we sign Cox I will make Fred sit on his own in the Merlin and you can sit with us lot. That's with or without money invested into the team.

We produced both of those without having an academy. Tozer being a discard from someone elses (Plymouths) academy.

Having said all that there are a few of the best young players at our centre of excellence that we lose to academies at neighbouring clubs just about every year and the likes of Reading, Bristol City and Southampton are going to keep sweeping up all the best local talent unless we can offer a oaching set up and facilities to compete with them.

any manager would want the youth set up to get academy status eventually(bits and peices in todays adver regarding this, and its nothing new).ling wanting that would have had nothing to do with it imo.
thge rest i think is all possible.and fatbury you are so wrong i'm cringing for you

Tbh Ling has it pretty cushty at Orient so he's bound to make high demands isn't he? Why leave a comfy job to go to one that might not be as comfy?

er i didn't read your post properly macca
if ling didn't think it important then quite rightly he shouldn't have been considered.

Ling didn't want the job as he was told Byrne would have to stay on as assistant. Why Byrne doesnt just go back to the yoofs is beyond me.

its kinda strange for ling to say that as i see it he regards youth set-ups as important for any club. Bodin currently runs the new college academy and scouts for ling's Orient. Brad gray wasnt the first and probably wont be the last swindon boy to sign for orient after playing under bodin here.

The whole academy thing is hit and miss. I would agree with Fatbury that teams DONT get what they out into them, especially at our level. City have made massive losses on theirs. Premiership money is a different level all together.

With the youths you just have to have the right people. We produced about 2 players of league standard in 10 years (Sol Davis and Mildenhall). Weve done better of late with Lukas, Caton, Pook (whose league pedigree is debateable) and now Tozer. Allen is also a very tidy player, if still a bit small.

It doesnt guarantee anything though.

I guess it was Ling who wanted too much money. I saw Chris Hughton at the Brighton game, so I think he probably had an interview as well.

i seriously doubt that we even spoke to ling, given that if orient let us speak to him without committing to take him on then it would undermine his position as manager there.
