i've had to leave a few off due to the restraints of the forum, i.e. fred ford, ken beamish Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Peter Venkman on Monday, January 7, 2008, 13:05:55 My personal favourite was Bobby Smith even though he got us relegated the 2 seasons preceeding were the best attcking football I have ever seen at Swindon and that includes under Ardilles and Hoddle.
But saying that, the best manager must be Danny Williams for me as he is the only manager to win a major honour at Swindon, the only ones that come close are Ardilles and Hoddle as they both got us promoted to the Premier League. Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Bogus Dave on Monday, January 7, 2008, 13:14:34 sturrocks the only one out of all of those i've seen, so i had to vote him
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: land_of_bo on Monday, January 7, 2008, 13:54:34 LOU Macari's Red and White Army!
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Lumps on Monday, January 7, 2008, 14:25:27 Ardiles easy.
Took the bunch of fairly average cloggers that Macari had recruited and had trained to play long ball football and, with the single addition of Kers, within one season had got a team pinging the ball about like they were Brazil. Hoddle's side was good, but to my mind the Ardiles play off winning side played the better football. What's more, even with Moncur and Hazard in midfield, that Hoddle side never really played at it's peak without Glenn on the pitch. Ok I never understood a word the man said in interview but I could live with that. Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: adje on Monday, January 7, 2008, 15:27:20 Bert Head produced the best ever bunch of local talent this club has ever seen
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Arriba on Monday, January 7, 2008, 15:30:05 macari for me.took us from nowhere to the playoffs of the now championship.
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: blinkpip on Monday, January 7, 2008, 18:31:04 No Andy King. Ill have him before Sturrock
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: red macca on Monday, January 7, 2008, 18:40:14 For me it was hoddle best football I think I have seen at the county ground and he managed to balance it out with a good defence..
The fact that I got to see someone like hoddle in a town shirt was a privilege by itself, doubt we will ever see as good a player in a town shirt again Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: STFC_Gazzza on Monday, January 7, 2008, 18:53:50 LOUUUUUUU MACARI WE'RE PROUD TO SING YOUR NAME SWINDON TOWN ARE GOIN' UP AGAIN!

Its a tough call between Macari and Hoddle, but the football we played under Hoddle was a joy to watch. So many happy memories. And he was the manager to take us to the promised land. Those interviews on club-call were the best; like you said you couldn't understand a word he said! Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: fatbury on Monday, January 7, 2008, 19:40:27 it was a toss up between Lou Macari who literally rescued the club from oblivion or Glenn Hoddle who has us playing the most amazing football ive ever seen at STFC.
For football reasons I picked Glenn - some of my best memories ever were under Hoddle Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, 13:04:18 I voted Sam Allen, I thought he deserved at least one vote and he 's been dead for like 50 years, so would scare the shit out of the opposition.
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Power to people on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, 15:32:51 I think it has to be Macari, never really saw many games under him as I was too young and no one to take me, but for what eh done in getting Swindon Town several promotions, getting sacked and then re-employed due to a fan backlash, and he was the one that really got Swindon in the headlines (for on and off the pitch reasons), and I would say without what he done for the club we probably would not be where we are today.
Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Spud on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, 17:20:13 I voted for Hoddle for the simple reason that we played some brilliant Football when he was in charge and i wasn't around to witness our team play when Ardiles and Macari were around.

You could make out a pretty good case for Sam....despite your spectral fantasies....he lived in Kent Road as well. Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Summerof69 on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, 22:08:13 For me it's between Macari, Ardiles and Hoddle.
And due to the fact that without the players Macari found, both Ossie and Glenn would not have had the foundations Macari left. On that basis I've gone for Lou, but it was a tough call. Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: BANGKOK RED on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, 22:38:49 I'd go for Lou. Despite that Hoddle's team played some F'in sexy footy. I never actually saw a Macari team but as others have said, if it was not for him then we could well be minnow league right now.

Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: neville w on Wednesday, January 9, 2008, 21:43:57 Tough decision.
I really enjoyed the Macari years, but it was not the most pleasing on the eye, and it was at a lower level. Great to see us overpowering teams and levels of fitness were astounding. Ardiles put together a side who would have had more chance of staying in the top flight Hoddle's side was outstanding, but relied a fair bit on his on pitch skills I'll go for Ardiles. I'll save Hoddle for one of the players roles. Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: sonic youth on Thursday, January 10, 2008, 02:31:02 i just went to close this poll and it's a 36-36 tie between macari and hoddle :D

Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: Robinz on Thursday, January 10, 2008, 09:33:25 Danny Williams took a very goodside to levels that were pure class...
Not only in the League cup...but in a strong third division and it was a shame that he left to go back to Yorkshire.. The Board were a problem in those days as well....!!!!! Title: Best XI: Manager Post by: MR BEN on Thursday, January 10, 2008, 10:00:33 Its Lou for me, I dreamt of not being shit , of getting close to the big time. whilst watching town in the bottom division.
He made it all real |
